Saturday's demonstration comes after several weeks of nationwide protests, online petitions and calls to boycott Japanese goods. The protests, begun as a campaign against Japan's candidacy for United Nations Security Council membership, gained momentum after the approval this week of a new series of Japanese history textbooks that gloss over well-documented wartime atrocities. It's not the first time Japanese textbooks have sparked controversy. The books appear to offer justification for wartime actions and make little mention of massacres such as the Rape of Nanjing, where, according to Chinese figures, several hundred thousand civilians were killed by marauding Japanese soldiers.

Jomon Period
Main article: Jomon The origins of Japanese civilization are buried in legend. February 11 660 BC is the traditional founding date of Japan by Emperor Jinmu . This however is a version of Japanese history from the country's first written records dating from the to the 8th centuries , after Japan had adopted the Chinese writing system which was introduced by the Koreans . In this period several emperors were struggling for power. In order to make legitimate their claims to the throne, they commissioned collections of poems containing a mythological inheritance of power from the sun-goddess Amaterasu (still the most venerable deity in the Shinto pantheon), via her grandson Ninigi to Jinmu Tenno, who was claimed to be an ancestor of the ruling imperial family. This propaganda-myth was taken up again by 19th century historians and used as a fundamental pillar of Japan's nationalistic Kokutai ideology.

    History
[edit this] [Upload image] Traditional Japanese legend maintains that Japan was founded in 600 BC by the Emperor Jimmu a direct descendant of the sun goddess and ancestor of the present ruling imperial family. About AD 405 the Japanese court officially adopted the Chinese writing system. During the sixth century Buddhism was introduced. These two events revolutionized Japanese culture and marked the beginning of a long period of Chinese cultural influence. From the establishment of the first fixed capital at Nara in 710 until 1867 the emperors of the Yamato dynasty were the nominal rulers but actual power was usually held by powerful court nobles regents or "shoguns" (military governors). Contact With the West The first contact with the West occurred about 1542 when a Portuguese ship blown off its course to China landed in Japan. During the next century traders from Portugal the Netherlands England and Spain arrived as did Jesuit Dominican and Franciscan missionaries. During the early part of the 17th century Japan's shogunate suspected that the traders and missionaries were actually forerunners of a military conquest by European powers. This caused the shogunate to place foreigners under progressively tighter restrictions. Ultimately Japan forced all foreigners to leave and barred all relations with the outside world except for severely restricted commercial contacts with Dutch and Chinese merchants at Nagasaki. This isolation lasted for 200 years until Commodore Matthew Perry of the U.S. Navy forced the opening of Japan to the West with the Convention of Kanagawa in 1854.

History of hip-hop dance scene in Japan
In Japanese hip-hop, dancing has been the center of the main cultrure, other than rapping, graffiti, and DJing. This is because dancing has a visual impact so everyone can uderstand, when it comes to dance there is not a language barrier.
Old School Era
New School Era
After this boom was over, many people stopped dancing. But at the same time, many still stayed in it. Combined with the people from old-school era (breaking era), these people brought the culture into next level. The street dancing became real culture not a trend.
New York and Japan
House dancing as a new form of dancing
Around 1992, some people realized the existence of other form of street dancing which is HOUSE dancing. The music video of Crystal Water's "Gypsy woman" is said to the first dance video featuring house dancers, Calief and Peter Paul. (Actually, in NY, house dancing had been around for a while before that video.) Then, House dancing developed so quickly and now it is established in Japan as a category of street dance as well as hip-hop, breaking, locking, and popping.

    34. Edo Japan, A Virtual Tour
Take a tour through Tokyo during the period of the Tokugawa shoguns, and learn about the history of japan's greatest city. Illustrated by ukiyoe images, the text discusses the traditions that underlie japanese culture.
    http://www.us-japan.org/edomatsu/
Welcome to Edo Edo is the ancient name for Tokyo. During the reign of the Tokugawa Shoguns, Japan's emperor reigned in secluded majesty at the imperial capital in Kyoto; however, the true center of power, government, the economy and social life was Edo , where the Shogun lived and ruled the country. For most people in Japan, Edo is more than just a historical city. It also has a symbolic image and meaning. It represents nearly everything that they consider a part of their "traditional" culture. For the Japanese, Edo has a romantic image that one could compare to the Italian's image of Renaissance Venice, the British image of Victorian London and the American image of the Wild West, all rolled into one. This website is designed to take you exploring in Edo . Hopefully it will offer not only some enjoyment, but also some insights into the source of "traditional Japan". Although modern Tokyo may look very "Western" on the surface, in its heart the spirit of Edo still lives on! This site is continuously growing and expanding, with the addition of new pages on various parts of the city. Bookmark this page and visit often. New towns, new sounds and graphics, and new information on historical Edo will be added on a regular basis. Special thanks to The Japan-America Society for co-hosting this website.

The approach followed is chronological. After a brief "Basics" section, Japan's historical trajectory is divided into ten periods, ranging from several thousand years before the Common Era through the late 1990s. For now we have emhasized the earlier eras and mainly left aside Twentieth Century Japan. Some sites, however, are arranged topically and begin whenever the activity first emerged. These we have worked into the chronology where discussion of the practice, belief, or trend commences. Because of its importance, we have created a separate page for

History Textbook Controversies in Japan. ERIC Digest.
There is an ongoing controversy in Japan about textbook treatments of Japanese military actions during World War II. This Digest examines (1) the importance of history textbooks in schools in Japan and the United States; (2) the context of history textbook controversies in Japan; (3) the current issues and contending positions in the Japanese history textbook controversies; and (4) the lessons and implications of the textbook controversies in Japan for educators in the United States.
THE IMPORTANCE OF HISTORY TEXTBOOKS IN JAPAN AND THE UNITED STATES.
The controversy surrounding the adoption of middle school history textbooks in Japan raises this question: why are textbooks, history textbooks in particular, important enough to fight about? Textbooks are used pervasively in Japanese and American schools. They are the dominant instructional materials in most classrooms. Thus, the content of textbooks looms large in the teaching and learning of history and other core subjects of the curriculum.

Gengo Gengo had been widely used in the region of East Asia over thousands of years since its creation by Emperor Bu in B.C. 140 during Han Dynasty China. In the case of Japan, the first Gengo was officially created in A.D.645 through a significant political shift called “Taika Reform”. From the Asuka era until the end of the Edo era, it was common that emperors and empresses held multiple-Gengo during their ruling periods in accordance with changes from traditional, political or natural aspects. However, after the famous the Meiji restoration, the system was arranged so that each emperor has only one Gengo from his (or her currently revival of status of empress being considered) coronation until his death. Today, Japan is the only country in the world that still enjoys this Gengo system. Japan's current Gengo, Heisei period is believed to be the 125 th Gengo when counted from the mythological first emperor in Japan, Jinmu-Tenno. It is in the year of 15th which is equal to 2003 in western calendar.

There are many Japanese restaurants in the United States. If asked to name a typical Japanese food, most people would say either "Sushi" or " Tempura." Yes, those are typical Japanese foods that can be found in most Japanese restaurants in America. However, there are many traditional Japanese foods beside sushi and tempura that can be traced back to just a few hundred years ago. Because Japan is surrounded by the sea, there is always an abundance of fresh seafood available. In addition, 61% of the land area of Japan is mountainoua so edible wild plants and fish from rivers and lakes are also available. The availability of harvested food throughout the year varies with the season. Each season has some vegetables and seafood available that are not available at other times of the year. Therefore, the people of Japan cook those vegetables and fish that are in season. For example, the fall is the best time of the year for eggplant and some kinds of fish, so people put those ingredients into a variety of dishes. Japanese people still eat a huge amount of seafood. However, people are not always eating only fish. They also eat meat and large amounts of vegetables. What did ancient Japanese people eat?
