TEACHING NOTES
This exercise has been designed as an individual self-study experience but can easily be adapted for classroom use. Given an appropriately equipped classroom, the exercise might become a shared experience if projected for the class to view and discuss together.
  • Under such circumstances, the classroom instructor might wish to convey verbally the introductory content found on the initial two pages and begin directly with the first viewing of the image set.
  • Duplicate the Written Exercise portion of the larger exercise and distribute it to the class to complete as individual desk work.
  • Follow the second viewing of the images with a discussion utilizing the points made in the pages at the conclusion covering Findings and Insights.
  • On the basis of my own personal experience, such an approach should be completed in approximately forty-five minutes of class time.
ADDITIONAL TEACHING SOURCE MATERIALS
In addition to the web site links listed at the conclusion of this exercise, several other internet-based resources tied to the introduction of Japanese geography and/or visual literacy can be found on the World Wide Web. The Smithsonian Institution's online version of its teaching resource publication ART-TO-ZOO, for example, includes a series of three lesson plans geared to elementary students entitled

The four major islands are separated by narrow straits and form a natural entity. The Ryukyu Islands curve 970 kilometers southward from Kyushu. The distance between Japan and the Korean Peninsula, the nearest point on the Asian continent, is about 200 kilometers at the Korea Strait. Japan has always been linked with the continent through trade routes, stretching in the north toward Siberia, in the west through the Tsushima Islands to the Korean Peninsula, and in the south to the ports on the south China coast. None of the populated plains or mountain basins is extensive in area. The largest, the Kanto Plain, where Tokyo is situated, covers only 13,000 square kilometers. Other important plains are the Nobi Plain surrounding Nagoya, the Kinki Plain in the Osaka-Kyoto area, the Sendai Plain around the city of Sendai in northeastern Honshu, and the Ishikari Plain on Hokkaido. Many of these plains are along the coast, and their areas have been increased by reclamation throughout recorded history. The small amount of habitable land prompted significant human modification of the terrain over many centuries. Land was reclaimed from the sea and from river deltas by building dikes and drainage, and rice paddies were built on terraces carved into mountainsides. The process continued in the modern period with extension of shorelines and building of artificial islands for industrial and port development, such as Port Island in Kobe and the new Kansai International Airport in Osaka Bay. Hills and even mountains have been razed to provide flat areas for housing.

List of Interactive Maps Situated along the Pacific Ocean's "ring of fire," Japan is a nation built by volcanoes and lives with the violent forces of creation on an almost daily basis. The now dormant volcano Mt. Fuji emerged about 10,000 years ago with the eruption of the Shin-Fuji volcano. The nearly 100 eruptions that occurred repeatedly since then and gave this mountain its photogenic conical shape ended in 1707 with the Hoei Eruption, reportedly the largest of all eruptions in the mountain's recorded history. There are over 200 known volcanoes on Japan with more than 20 still active. In July 1989 a strong underwater eruption occurred near the city of Izu, some 100 km (62 mi) southwest of Tokyo. The abundance of volcanoes has produced a beneficial side-effect: a great number of hot springs whose waters are used for medical and therapeutical purposes. The Japanese islands sit over an extremely unstable region of the earth's crust where the Phillipine Sea Tectonic Plate and the vast Pacific Tectonic Plate subduct under the Eurasian Continental Plate and the North American Continental Plate near East Asia. Situated in the subduction zone at the boundaries of these plates, Japan has the distinction of living with more earthquakes than any other country on earth. If you include tremors detectable by only the most sensitive seismographs, about 7,500 earthquakes may occur in any given year in Japan and its surrounding areas. Of these, about 1,500 can be felt by humans. As many as 40 or 50 earthquakes felt by humans occur yearly in the Tokyo area alone.

List of Interactive Maps GENERAL DESCRIPTION Japan is a land of striking scenic beauty. First time visitors are impressed by its greenness and its mountains, which cover nearly three-quarters of the country. Gentle plains and intermountain basins account for only about 25% of Japanese territory. Here, the flat lands are geologically young and the soil runoff from the surrounding mountains is shallow. The rugged peaks, snow-fed lakes, turbulent rivers, rocky gorges and waterfalls and dense forests are breathtaking, but they put severe limits on livable land. With seventy-five percent of the nation unsuitable for either habitation or cultivation due to mountains and rocky sea coasts, and with only 16 per cent of the land cultivated, the entire Japanese population actually lives in an area roughly the size of the state of Maine, about 85,470 sq km (33,000 sq mi). This makes Japan the most populated country in the world in terms of population per liveable square mile. var menu = new COOLjsMenu("JTAMenu", MENU_ITEMS);

Take a look at this map of Japan and note the number of large cities in such a small area.
    Where are most cities located?
Japan is a small country comprised of mountainous islands with numerous dormant and active volcanoes. The country is no wider than a few hundred miles!
Because of the mountainous terrain, most people are concentrated on the coastal areas (Tokyo, Osaka).
Imagine putting half of the U.S. population in the state of California! Then you would have the population density of Japan.
There are four main islands: Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu and numerous smaller islands to north and south, all prone to earthquakes. The highest point is Mount Fuji at 3,776 meters. There are numerous, rapidly flowing rivers which provide water for irrigation and hydroelectric-power generation.
The climate is generally rainy with high humidity.
There is a wide range of climates
    • warm summers and long cold winters in north
    • hot humid summers and short winters in center
    • and long, hot, humid summers, and mild winters in southwest.
