Geography The Japanese archipelago was designed by someone delighting in complexity. The islands have a total area roughly the same as the US state of Montana, but whereas Montana is very neat with square corners, Japan is scattered about in four main islands - Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu. Japan extends about 3,000 kilometers from subtropical seas (Okinawa) to sub-arctic climes (northern Hokkaido) and takes up less than 0.3% of the earth's surface. The land is very up and down, with lots of up. Plains account for only 13% and plateaus for 12% of the total land area; the rest is mountainous, and the mountains are steep. The graceful curve of Japan's highest mountain, Mr. Fuji (3,776 meters) is an exception. In Japan, 532 mountains are over 2,000 meters high. The landform that is today's Japan began its history 400 million years ago. There are three continental plates that intersect under Japan, and these are responsible for what the islands look like and how they behave.

Geography Location As an island nation, Japan comprises of over 1000 small islands and four larger ones, namely Honshu (slightly larger than Britain), Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku. Among the smaller islands, Okinawa is the largest and most significant. Japan stretches along an archipelago that extends from the western tip of Honshu all the way to Taiwan. Its unique location of being apart from the Asian mainland help form and define its culture into what it is today. Size Japan's total land area is 377,435 sq. km, with more than 80 percent of it being mountainous. A chain of islands stretches across a 3000 km-long arc of mountains along the eastern rim of the Asian continent. Topography Japan's mountainous topography is rather interesting. Most mountains are volcanic with more than 40 of it presently active. Numerous hot springs and breathtaking scenery are the results of volcanic mountains although there is always the constant danger of frequent eruptions and intense seismic activity. Rough earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunami (tidal waves), and monsoon climates make up part of the lifestyle in Japan.

Geography Japan is separated from the Asian mainland by 160km ( 100 miles ) of sea. About 70% of the country are covered by hills and mountains. The island nation is still subjected to natural disasters such as earthquakes, tidal waves and volcanic eruptions. As a result, Japan, geologically speaking, always seems a bit capricious, an unstable land mass and difficult to deal with. Lowlands and plains are small and scattered, mostly lying along the coast, which is very long in relation to the land area, and has very varied features. The deeply indented bays with good natural harbors tend to be adjacent to mountainous terrain.

The archipelago runs in an arc from north to south, stretching 3,800 km. Its total land area is 377,818 sq km, which is about 4% of that of the United States and slightly more than one and a half times as large as that of Britain. Japan occupies about 0.3% of the earth's total land area. Mountains claim 71% of Japan's land area, with plains and basins accounting for the remaining 29%. A chain of mountains extends along the middle of the long, narrow archipelago, dividing it into two sides, one facing the Pacific and the other the Sea of Japan. In general, the rivers are short and swift-flowing.

Summary of Japan's Geography Japan's Geography The island of Japan forms an arc in the Pacific Ocean to the east of the Asian continent. The land comprises four large islands name (in decreasing order of size) Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku, together with many smaller islands. The Pacific Ocean lies to the east while the Sea of Japan and the East China Sea separate Japan from the Asian continent. Japan's total land area is about 378,000 square km, which is approximately the same size as Germany, Finland, Vietnam, or Malaysia. As warm ocean current known as the Kuroshio flows northeastward along the southern part of the Japanese archipelago, and a branch of it, known as the Tsushima Current, flows into the Sea of Japan along the west side of the country. From the north, a cold current known as the Oyashio flows south along Japan's east coast, and a branch of it, called the Liman Current, enters the Sea of Japan from the north. The mixing of these warm and cold currents helps produce abundant fish resources in waters near Japan.

The four major islands are separated by narrow straits and form a natural entity. The Ryukyu Islands curve 970 kilometers southward from Kyushu. The distance between Japan and the Korean Peninsula, the nearest point on the Asian continent, is about 200 kilometers at the Korea Strait. Japan has always been linked with the continent through trade routes, stretching in the north toward Siberia, in the west through the Tsushima Islands to the Korean Peninsula, and in the south to the ports on the south China coast. None of the populated plains or mountain basins is extensive in area. The largest, the Kanto Plain, where Tokyo is situated, covers only 13,000 square kilometers. Other important plains are the Nobi Plain surrounding Nagoya, the Kinki Plain in the Osaka-Kyoto area, the Sendai Plain around the city of Sendai in northeastern Honshu, and the Ishikari Plain on Hokkaido. Many of these plains are along the coast, and their areas have been increased by reclamation throughout recorded history. The small amount of habitable land prompted significant human modification of the terrain over many centuries. Land was reclaimed from the sea and from river deltas by building dikes and drainage, and rice paddies were built on terraces carved into mountainsides. The process continued in the modern period with extension of shorelines and building of artificial islands for industrial and port development, such as Port Island in Kobe and the new Kansai International Airport in Osaka Bay. Hills and even mountains have been razed to provide flat areas for housing.

    Japanese Geography
Many people in the world know something about Japan but they don't know where Japan is. The country is east of mainland China across the Japanese Sea. Japan is a relatively small country, approximately 1/48 the size of Russia and 1/25 the size of China in land area. Moreover, Japanese land area is smaller than the state of California in the United States! About 1.27 million Japanese people live in the country where available land is limited. High population densities cause many social problems such as rising land costs and land contamination because of a concentration of people in a small area. Japan is surrounded by the sea and is composed of 4 major islands and many small islands. The 4 major islands are Hokkaiodo, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. Japan stretches from northeast to southwest, and the length is approximately 3500 km (2173.91 miles). One of major islands, Hokkaido, is at about the same longitude with Minnesota. The island of Kyushu is about the same longitude as northern Florida or the state of Georgia. According to experts, about 60% of the Japanese landscape is steep mountainous regions covered with forest. Approximately 70% of the total Japanese population is concentrated in the plains and basins, an area comprising just 24% of the habitable land. Volcanic activity in Sakura Island Japan is located in an area where 4 tectonic plates are connected to each other. The land sits on two plates, the north American plate and the Eurasian plate. The boundary between the two plates is in the middle of Honshu Island. This is one of the reasons why Japan experiences so many earthquakes. Also, there are many volcanos throughout the country. Those volcanos are still active and some of them frequently erupt .

The Kuril and Sakhalin Island Controversy
Dateline: 02/14/00 Japan surrendered at the end of World War II on Aug. 14, 1945. However, in the over 54 years since the end of the war, Japan and Russia have still not signed a peace treaty ending the conflict between the two countries. The reason? A handful of small islands off the northern coast of Japan's Hokkaido island, which are part of the Kuril Island chain (known as the Northern Territories in Japan). Last week, during a four-day visit to Japan, Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov met with Japanese Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi, and the two pledged that a peace treaty between their countries would be enacted by the end of 2000. The dispute between the two countries rests over the control of the three southernmost Kuril islands, which were taken over by the Soviet Union in 1945. Japan claims that these islands are part of Japan, as they have always been visible with the naked eye from the Japanese island of Hokkaido and appear on centuries-old maps of Japan as being part of Japan.
