    Our Discovery of Japan
    And Its Culture
Our daughter was teaching English in Japan during 2001-2002, so my wife and I took advantage of this to visit her from Dec.22nd to Jan.2nd and stay in her home (in Katsutadai neighbourhood, Sakura City, Chiba Prefecture to be more precise). Since Jackie had become quite fluent in Japanese, and had adopted a Japanese lifestyle, this was a unique opportunity to really start to understand a people very different from the European backgrounds with which we are familiar.
I've divided our observations, with accompaning pictures, into the following sections: Enjoy!

Welcome to the KCC Japan Education Exchange website. Our mission is to facilitate better learning and understanding between the American and Japanese cultures. Our exchange programs and fellowships allow teenagers and adults to experience the uniqueness of living and understanding another culture. Many of our programs are given as scholarships and cost nothing for participants. Our other unique educational initiatives include Essay contests for scholarships to Japan, bringing Japanese teachers to American public schools and hosting symposia on US/Japan-related themes What's in a Name? In December 2003, Kobe College Corporation's Board of Directors voted to extend its name. From now on, the 84-year-old foundation will be known as KCC Japan Education Exchange. This change, taken after several years of consideration, was undertaken in order to achieve greater clarity with funding sources, scholars, and other key constituencies. The name helps communicate that we are not a college, or a corporation, but a non-profit foundation that supports education exchange between Japan and North America. As it has been since 1920, our primary relationship will continue to be with Kobe College in Nishinomiya, Japan. Our official, legal name remains as it appears on our 1920 charter. However, our extended name will be used on our letterhead, newsletters, and other printed materials. In abbreviated form, it is our new URL: www.kccjee.org

Although there is a sprinkling of national holidays, what strikes a person about celebrations, festivals and holidays in Japan is their local nature. There is scarcely a single day that there is not at least one large local festival or celebration in progress. The national holidays are New Year's Day (1 January), Coming of Age Day (15 January), National Foundation Day (11 February), Vernal Equinox (20 or 21 March), Greenery Day (29 April), Constitution Memorial Day (3 May), Children's Day (5 May), Respect-for-the-Aged Day (15 September), Autumnal Equinox (23 or 24 September), Health Sports Day (10 October), Culture Day (3 November), Labor Thanksgiving Day (23 November), Emperor's Birthday (23 December).

Perez depicted intimate relationships between two people whether man and woman, two women and two men. The entire concept of a relationship and sentiments between two people is brought to light. In each painting there is an evident contrast between shade and light. The color red is central to his paintings and consistently symbolizes masculinity, passion and dominance.
