Oral presentation on how best to study ancient history in America. 1,651 words ( approx. 6.6 pages ), 6 sources, APA, Click here to show/hide Paper Summary
    Abstract
    From the Paper:

"I, however, think that a chronological study of history is most effective for a number of reasons. Firstly, time, not geography, is the basis for how civilizations develop. In other words, almost every civilization has been influenced by one of the past, regardless of how different in scope they are. For example, the United States' primary influence was that of Colonial England, but it does not end there. Colonial England has influences that date back to the times of Rome, and maybe even Ancient China. Civilizations, no matter what the time period, were not formed within a vacuum-they all had influences, whether directly or indirectly. For that reason, it is best to analyze history through time, and through the developments of the human race as a whole. By examining the entire history of man, we can put the regional developments into context." Term Paper #48729 Add to Cart (You can always remove it later) Ancient History

The approach followed is chronological. After a brief "Basics" section, Japan's historical trajectory is divided into ten periods, ranging from several thousand years before the Common Era through the late 1990s. For now we have emhasized the earlier eras and mainly left aside Twentieth Century Japan. Some sites, however, are arranged topically and begin whenever the activity first emerged. These we have worked into the chronology where discussion of the practice, belief, or trend commences. Because of its importance, we have created a separate page for

    The Yayoi Period (300 B.C.E.-300 C.E.)
The Kofun or Yamato Period (300-680 C.E.) ...
The Meiji Restoration Period (1868-1912) and Modern Japan
In broad overviews of the history of Japan, scholars regularly center their attention on major turning points. Their choices help us understand varying perspectives on the weight accorded to internal versus external influences in shaping Japanese civilization. Disclosure of the Report by the Japan-ROK Joint History Research Committee
June 1, 2005 The report on the results of the Japan-ROK Joint History Research was disclosed today upon the conclusion on May 31, 2005 of the joint research that has been conducted over a three-year period since May 2002. The report will be made available on the homepage of the Japan-Korea Cultural Foundation, the Secretariat of the Joint History Research Committee. The Japan-ROK Joint History Research was launched based on the understanding regarding history textbook issues shared by Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and then President Kim Dae Jung of the Republic of Korea (ROK) at the Japan-ROK Summit Meeting held in October 2001. The two leaders confirmed the importance of promoting mutual understanding concerning accurate facts and recognition of history. And, to this end, agreed to establish a forum for experts to discuss the issue. The experts of Japan and the ROK have conducted joint research through a number of period-specific working groups: ancient history, medieval and modern history, and modern and contemporary history. Within each working group, members from Japan and the ROK have submitted papers, which are currently being translated. The papers to be disclosed today therefore are currently only available in their original language. (The papers in Japanese will be available on the website of the Japan-Korea Cultural Foundation and those in Korean on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MOFAT).) Translation of the papers is scheduled to be completed by June 10, after which the translated versions will be uploaded on the above-mentioned websites. In the meantime, the Joint Support Committee of both countries will advance the necessary preparations for the publication of this report.

    The Japanese Roots
Jared Diamond Source: Discover, June 1998 Vol. 19 Just who are the Japanese? Where did they come from and when? The answer are difficult to come by, though not impossiblethe real problem is that the Japanese themselves may not want to know. UNEARTHING THE ORIGINS OF THE JAPANESE IS A MUCH HARDER TASK THAN YOU MIGHT GUESS. AMONG WORLD POWERS TODAY, THE JAPANESE ARE THE MOST DISTINCTIVE IN THEIR CULTURE AND ENVIRONMENT. THE ORIGINS OF THEIR LANGUAGE ARE one of the most disputed questions of linguistics. These questions are central to the self-image of the Japanese and to how they are viewed by other peoples. Japan's rising dominance and touchy relations with its neighbors make it more important than ever to strip away myths and find answers. Archeologists have proposed four conflicting theories. Most popular in Japan is the view that the Japanese gradually evolved from ancient Ice Age people who occupied Japan long before 20,000 B.c. Also widespread in Japan is a theory that the Japanese descended from horse-riding Asian nomads who passed through Korea to conquer Japan in the fourth century, but who were themselvesemphaticallynot Koreans. A theory favored by many Western archeologists and Koreans, and unpopular in some circles in Japan, is that the Japanese are descendants of immigrants from Korea who arrived with rice-paddy agriculture around 400 B.C. Finally, the fourth theory holds that the peoples named in the other three theories could have mixed to form the modern Japanese.

    ANCIENT HISTORY OF SANUKI
The many archaeological findings in Kagawa Prefercture are considered cultural assets to be proud of in comparison with other prefectures far removed from the ancient capitals of Nara and Kyoto. The historical period begins arbitrarily with the introduction of Chinese writing along with Buddhism in the 6th Century. But long before that time there was a relatively high level of cultual achievement in this tiny province. In this geologically active area, Japan originally split off from the Asian mainland and has kept fragmenting further into four main islands and thousands of islets. The earliest people were stranded, and others came by boat, but eventually the Japan Sea became a formidable barrier to seafarers to and from the mainland. An ivory doll found near Shodoshima Island off Takamatsu shows that there were both men and mammoths in this area 30,000 years ago. And yet, the Seto Inland Sea was formed only 10,000 years ago by the dropping down of previous land. The conical islets visible from northern Shikoku were once mountaintops. Moreover, Takamatsu and most of the present prefecture were then under water until a few thousand years ago, when the weathering of high mountains produced the present plains. The first evidence of human settlements is found in the mountain range behind Zentsuji and Kotohira. On 600m Osayama there were Old Stone Age culture human beings some tens of thousands of years ago.

China Deletes Ancient Korean History on Web Site
    By Yoon Won-sup
Staff Reporter China on Thursday deleted all the content on Korea's ancient history on its Foreign Ministry Web site despite mounting pressure from the Seoul government to correct Beijing's alleged distortion of Korean history. Seoul's Foreign Ministry conveyed disappointment to its Chinese counterpart through diplomatic channels, asserting it ignored the calls to correct the incorrect description of ancient Korea. ``The Beijing government informed us that it will remove content on ancient Korea in an introduction to Korean history on its Web site last Monday,'' Shin Bong-kil, the ministry spokesperson said. ``Today, they made the deletion.'' Shin further said that Beijing also removed the section on ancient Japan, leaving only content on Japan's post-World War II period on its Web site. China's decision was likely intended to reduce unnecessary diplomatic friction with the Seoul government, but its failure to meet the Seoul government's demand for the correction of China's alleged distortion of history regarding the ancient kingdom of Koguryo, looks to create further waves. In the Chinese Internet site (www.fmprc.gov.cn), the Korean history section now covers only Korea's modern history dating back to the establishment of its government in Aug. 15, 1948.
