Prehistory
* Archaeologists long believed that Japan had no prehistoric culture; however, excavations conducted since end of WWII have unearthed Paleolithic chipped-stone tools (but no human remains).
  • People who used these tools probably moved from Asia to Japan over several land bridges that joined Japanese islands with the mainland (near Korea and SE coastline of Siberia).
  • Paleolithic Age in Japan dated from 30,000 to 10,000 years ago. Little known about the islands' inhabitants during this timeartifacts indicate they probably lived in pits or caves, used fire, and subsisted by hunting/gathering. No bone or horn tools or pottery recovered from these sites (indicates a Pre-Pottery culture).
* Paleolithic peoples followed by two Neolithic cultures: Jomon culture (c. 5000 B.C. - c. 250 B. C.): remains show characteristic Neolithic progression from chipped to polished tools and manufacture of pottery, the latter highly developed. Jomon culture spread slowly throughout all Japanese islands, with different regions manufacturing different kinds of pottery.
  • Dwellings were either shallow pits or open, stone-floored space, both covered with roofs. These structures (from 5-6 to several dozen), often grouped together in horseshoe-shaped settlements, with open, commons-space in center.

appear in history until 57 AD when it is first mentioned in Chinese histories, where it is referred to as "Wa." The Chinese historians tell us of a land divided into a hundred or so separate tribal communities without writing or political cohesion. The Japanese do not start writing their histories until around 600 AD; this historical writing culminates in 700 AD in the massive chronicles, The Record of Ancient Matters and the Chronicles of Japan. These chronicles tell a much different and much more legendary history of Japan, deriving the people of Japan from the gods themselves.

B.C. to the present day. For this reason, the original inhabitants managed to hold on to stone-age life long after the regions to the west had urbanized. This island status has also protected Japan from foreign invasions. Only twice in Japanese history has the island been successfully overrun by foreigners: in the third century BC by the wave of immigrations from the Korean peninsula, and in 1945 by the United States.

After some expectant years of waiting, Japan's Crown Prince Naruhito and Princess Masako had their first child in 2001, but it was a girl. Now, a bill to permit a woman to become Empress is under consideration. In ancient times Japan did have Queens (Empresses). Among them Himiko (175?~248) has excited many Japanese minds due to her romantic history as a mysterious Queen who highlighted the ancient history of Japan. Himiko appeared in a Chinese history book, the so called "Gishi-Wajin-den" which is described below. Where is the Yamataikoku? Who is Himiko?

The book in progress concerns the broad subject of ethnogenesis in the eastern Mediterranean in the later Middle Ages. I am looking at the wide area stretching from the Black Sea down to Egypt with an eye toward explaining how the various peoples living there defined themselves in contrast to their neighbors. I am studying treaty and contract making, colonies, slavery, physiognomy, and ethnic identity as ways to explore how people crossed the boundaries of culture, language, and creed to form relationships with others."

    Women Warriors of Japan
The Role of the Arms-Bearing Women in Japanese History
    by Ellis Amdur
    Introduction
The entry of Asian martial arts into the Western world has happened to coincide, through no particular design, with the transformation of women's role in society. Women of the late twentieth century have risen into prominence in business, science, and as players on the political stage. The victimization of women in domestic violence and sexual and physical assault is still rampant, but it is increasingly countered through legislation and political activism and, on a personal level, through women's pursuit of fighting skills to defend themselves. Ever greater numbers of women are involved in martial arts and self-defense training. For most people, identifying with one's predecessors is a strong desire. One often models oneself on an ideal that is personified in heroic myths or tales. For many women interested in Japanese martial practice, there is the image of the woman warrior bearing a naginata in the protection of her home and even on the field of battle. Although it is a glorious image, it is difficult to separate fact from fancy because of the almost complete absence of historical records that document the role of arms-bearing women.
    Early History
The battle tales of Japan, chronicles of wars in the Heian, Kamakura, and Muromachi periods, focus almost completely on the deeds of the nobility and warrior classes. These tales, passed down by blind bards much as Homer's

Japan-101 Community Japan Topic Forums History PDA View Full Version : Ancient Clan History Chuck February 22nd, 2005, 12:24 AM I am trying to find out some information on the Yuki Clan. I have found some information about being the Daimyo of Shimosa during the 12th through 15th centuries, but have found very little information on them. I would like to find out details about this clan and how they started and specifically their clan symbol and the meaning of this symbol. I found this symbol on the samurai-archives page and have been drawing it long before ever seeing it. Does anyone have information on this? Doug M February 23rd, 2005, 08:41 AM Greetings Chuck:
This is a tough one for me. I'm not that knowledgeable on Japan's ancient history. I even searched Flags Of The World (http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/) and did not find anything. They have a huge collection of Japanese Feudal flags. It may be worth digging into their data further than I did since they often list bits of historical information with each flag. Start at the list of flags related to Japan (http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/jp.html).
Other than that, please have some patience. Let's hope that a passerby has some information or another source with relevant information.

    Nara from the air
Nara is an ancient capital of Japan that abounds with archaeological sites and cultural heritage. Historical monuments in Nara were inscribed on the World Heritage List announced by UNESCO in 1998. This web page guides you on a tour of the nature, history and culture of Nara. The old Japanese word soramitsu was used in classical Japanese poetry as an epithet for Yamato, the old name of the Nara region. Because the Japanese word sora means sky and mi means viewing, Nihon-shoki , a history compiled in the 8th century, explained the derivation of the word soramitsu by the legend that a deity named Nigihayahi-no-Mikoto viewed Yamato from a flying ship and then landed there (see Nihongi translated by W. G. Aston, p. 135). Accordingly, this tour uses a satellite image as an index and aerial photos in explanations of the various things you'll discover.
