Prehistory
Archaeological evidence shows that people were living in Korea during the Palaeolithic period and over 70,000 years ago in the period of Korean prehistory . Tool-making cultural artifacts have been found in present-day North Hamgyong South P'yongan Gyeonggi , and north and south Chungcheong Provinces. Cave dwellers lived on vegetation, as well as by hunting and fishing. Artifacts appear similar to those found in Manchuria and Mongolia , and have also been compared to stone, wood and bone tools used by North American native nations. edit

Nara Period
Japanese literature traces its beginnings to oral traditions that were first recorded in written form in the early eighth century after a writing system was introduced from China. The Kojiki (Record of Ancient Matters) and Nihon shoki (Chronicle of Japan) were completed in and , respectively, as government projects. The former is an anthology of myths, legends, and other stories , while the latter is a chronological record of history . The Fudoki (Records of Wind and Earth), compiled by provincial officials beginning in describe the history, geography, products, and folklore of the various provinces The most brilliant literary product of this period was the Man'yoshu (Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves), an anthology of 4,500 poems composed by people ranging from unknown commoners to emperors and compiled around . Already emerging was a verse form comprising 31 syllables (5-7-5-7-7) known as tanka. In the Kokin wakashu or Kokinshu (Collection of Poems from Ancient and Modern Times) was published as the first poetry anthology commissioned by an emperor; its preface paid high tribute to the vast possibilities of literature

Ancient Japan
Ancient Japan to 1185 It is not known when humans first settled on the Japanese archipelago. It was long believed that there was no Paleolithic occupation in Japan, but since World War II thousands of sites have been unearthed throughout the country, yielding a wide variety of Paleolithic tools. These include both core tools, made by chipping away the surface of a stone, and flake tools, made by working with a stone flake broken off from a larger piece of stone. There is little doubt that the people who used these implements moved to Japan from the Asian continent. At one stage, land connections via what are now the Korea and Tsushima straits made immigration from the Korean peninsula possible, while another connection, via what are now the Soya and Tsugaru straits, allowed people to come in from northeastern Asia. The Paleolithic Period in Japan is variously dated from 30,000 to 10,000 years ago, although the argument has been made for a Lower Paleolithic culture prior to 35,000 BC. Nothing certain is known of the culture of the period, though it seems likely that people lived by hunting and gathering, used fire, and made their homes either in pit-type dwellings or in caves. No bone or horn artifacts of the kind associated with this period in other areas of the world have yet been found in Japan. Since there was no knowledge whatsoever of pottery, the period is referred to as the Pre-Ceramic era. Climatic changes help to account for the existence of a Mesolithic stage in early Japanese culture, a time when much of the abundant fauna of earlier times became depleted by the expanding human population of the archipelago. The introduction of the bow and arrow is regarded as a local response to a decrease in game available for food.

Ancient Japan - Astronomy and Folklore
Stars that played a significant role in the lives of common citizens in Japan were often given the distinction of being called Yowatashi Boshi or passing the night stars . This phrase was applied to prominent star groups which would appear in the East at sunset and set with the dawning sun. Orion is certainly one of the most noticeable Yowatashi Boshi in the sky. In most every culture, it is easily recognized and continues to grab the attention of children and adults throughout the long winter nights. The grouping of stars that form the constellation, most especially the three belt stars or Mitsu Boshi have played a major role in Japan's cultural heritage with the sky. As one of many groups of stars with which Japanese formed associations, Orion is a particularly rich "case study" in the ways in which Japanese historically made the sky a part of their lives. In the case of Orion, Japanese have seen few if any individual gods or heroes or even mythological creatures within the constellation as a whole but rather icons of common knowledge or use and symbols of specific cultural values and attributes. While some star lore reflects a kind of national "consciousness", there is no singular Japanese interpretation of the star patterns but rather a variety of objects, memorialized events, seasonal markers, symbols of religious value, and legends based on particular geographical regions and functional needs of ordinary citizens.

http://jtrad.columbia.jp/eng/history01.html
Almost nothing is known about music in Japan's prehistory, through the Jomon and Yayoi periods, but there are ritual figures of musicians, suggesting the early importance of music. The late Yayoi period is marked by the building of immense tombs, and there were probably many powerful clans that gradually culminated in the dominance of the Yamato clan. The state that they built used language, religion and legal systems from the Asian continent and resulted in the high development of the imperial court as a political and cultural center in the Nara (645 - 710) and Heian (794 - 1185) periods. Even when the political power of the imperial court declined after this time, the court retained its cultural traditions, many which continue to this day.
The little that remains from the prehistoric period seems to be some songs, legends and rituals recorded in the "Kojiki" and "Nihon Shoki," the first chronicles of the new state. When the "Kojiki" was compiled during the reign of Emperor Temmu (reigned around 673 - 686), these songs were already part of the tradition of the imperial court.
From the earliest stages of Japanese history, poetry and song have been very important and the distinction between the two is not clear. The word "uta" can mean either "song" or "poem." What is clear is that poetry is almost always imagined as being recited aloud. The Nara and Heian periods set the standards for poetry with the imperial anthologies Manyoshu and Kokinshu. The forms of verse and use of poetic images developed at this time lives through almost all of Japanese music to the present.

@In 1560 (Eiroku 3), Hisahide Matsunaga constructed Tamon castle on Mt. Mikenji-yama. This was the first time that Nara was ruled by a warrior. Seven years later, the battle between Hisahide and the Miyoshi clan extended into Nara and the Daibutsu-den was again burned down. However, this time, the combined efforts of all town citizens helped limit the damages caused by the war, and prompted all of the villages in the area to come together to form Nara town.
Edo Period
@During the Edo period, Nara was converted into a territory under the direct control of the Nara shogunate administrator. All of the prominent elderly townspeople were selected to receive a mandate from the shogunate administrator to govern the town. From this, four town representatives were responsible for the actual governing of the town. During a census at the end of the 17th century, a total of 35,000 people were counted in all 205 towns.
At the beginning of the Edo period, Nara flourished with the production of specialty products, such as bleached cotton as well as sake, black ink, armors and helmets, swords, and fans, turning Nara into an industrial city.

HOME TIME AND SPACE PREHISTORY MESOPOTAMIA ... The Boxer Rebellion Dynasty From at least 1766 BC to this century, China was ruled by dynasties. A dynasty is a ruling family that passes control from one generation to the next. One dynasty lasted more than 800 years, while another lasted only fifteen years. The Chinese people supported their rulers because of what they called the Mandate of Heaven. The ancient Chinese believed their ancestors in heaven had chosen their leaders. The people would rebel against a weak leader because they believed he had lost the Mandate of Heaven. The Shang was the first dynasty to leave written records. The Shang rulers expanded the borders of their kingdom to include all of the land between Mongolia and the Pacific Ocean. The Shang practiced human sacrifice. If a king died, many of his slaves would join him in the grave. Some were beheaded first, others were buried alive. The Shang also developed a lunar calendar consisting of twelve months of 30 days each. When a Shang king died, his next oldest brother replaced him. When there were no brothers, the oldest maternal nephew became king. The Chou were nomads who lived west of the Shang. They overthrew the Shang and ruled China from 1122

Jomon Period
Main article: Jomon The origins of Japanese civilization are buried in legend. February 11 660 BC is the traditional founding date of Japan by Emperor Jinmu . This however is a version of Japanese history from the country's first written records dating from the to the 8th centuries , after Japan had adopted the Chinese writing system which was introduced by the Koreans . In this period several emperors were struggling for power. In order to make legitimate their claims to the throne, they commissioned collections of poems containing a mythological inheritance of power from the sun-goddess Amaterasu (still the most venerable deity in the Shinto pantheon), via her grandson Ninigi to Jinmu Tenno, who was claimed to be an ancestor of the ruling imperial family. This propaganda-myth was taken up again by 19th century historians and used as a fundamental pillar of Japan's nationalistic Kokutai ideology.

The first volume of a projected six - volume work (four of which have already appeared) is designed to cover the period from the beginnings of human existence on the Japanese archipelago to the end of the Nara period in A.D. 784. As noticeable progress toward civilization was recorded only after the introduction of wet - rice agriculture and the use of iron tools around 300 B.C., the volume is focused, appropriately, on the final one thousand years. In his introductory essay, Delmer Brown, the editor of the volume, shows how recent studies of Japan's ancient past, making use of startling new archeological information and adopting an interdisciplinary approach, have broadened our horizons. Keenly aware of the lingering impact of prewar scholarship that had been moulded by preoccupations with the divinity of Japan's sacred imperial line, the editor directs the reader to the introduction of techniques for growing rice and making iron tools and weapons, and to the changes that followed in the intricate connections among ancient Japan, Korea, and China that have been largely understudied thus far.
