Caribbean Islands Table of Contents From May 5, 1494, when Columbus first set foot on what he described as "the fairest isle that eyes have beheld," to its emergence as an independent state on August 6, 1962, Jamaica passed through three main periods. First, it served for nearly 150 years as a Spanish-held way station for galleons en route to and from the Spanish Main. Second, from the mid-1600s until the abolition of slavery in 1834, it was a sugar-producing, slave-worked plantation society. Thereafter it was a largely agricultural, British colony peopled mainly by black peasants and workers. The Spanish adventurer Juan de Esquivel settled the island in 1509, calling it Santiago, the name given it by Columbus. In the period of Spanish dominance from 1509 to 1655, the Spaniards exploited the island's precious metals and eradicated the Arawaks, who succumbed to imported diseases and harsh slavery (see The Pre- European Population, ch. 1). An English naval force sent by Oliver Cromwell attacked the island in 1655, forcing the small group of Spanish defenders to capitulate in May of that year (see The European Settlements, ch. 1). Within 3 years, the English had occupied the island, whose population was only about 3,000, but it took them many years to bring the rebellious slaves under their control. Cromwell increased the island's white population by sending indentured servants and prisoners captured in battles with the Irish and Scots, as well as some common criminals. This practice was continued under Charles II, and the white population was also augmented by immigrants from the North American mainland and other islands, as well as by the English buccaneers. But tropical diseases kept the number of whites well under 10,000 until about 1740.

Indians from South America landed on the shores of Jamaica to begin settlement of our fair isle. It has been speculated that they might have been Arawak or Taino Indians. Some 800-900 years later a fierce band of Indians the Caribs also landed in Jamaica. During his second voyage Christopher Columbus landed in St. Ann's Bay and begins Jamaica's journey into the New World for better or worse.
In the early 16th century the first African slaves arrive in Jamaica. In the mid-seventh century, 1655, the English capture Jamaica from the Spanish. The Spanish flee to Cuba but their released slaves become an august part of our history as the Maroons, having the distinction of never being defeated in battle by the English. They earn the right to govern themselves in a treaty signed in 1739.
In 1760 a slave rebellion in Port Maria makes the Coromantee a known figure in Jamaican history. In 1807 the English abolish the slave trade to the colonies, but it takes a rebellion led by 'Sam Sharpe' a green preacher in Montego Bay in 1831. The severe retribution of the authorities creates the anti-slavery sentiment in England and in 1834 slavery is abolished.
In 1865, Jamaica is made a British colony after the government savagely represses the Morant Bay rebellion led by Paul Bogle by executing over 400 conspirators. In 1872 Kingston becomes the capital of Jamaica. In 1962 we are granted independence from England and so we remain today. The temperature should be a low of 78?F at the start of the race. With low annual rainfall, rain is not expected.

Jamaican Parish Reference The images behind the antique map links are very easy to read, easier than if you were holding the actual maps. I used the scanner as a sort of microscope and the images are large enough to be studied on your computer screen without a magnifying glass. Correspondingly, the sizes of these electronic files are also quite large and it will take a bit of time to download them to your computer. I've tried hard to keep them each under a megabyte. With maps that exceeded the glass size of my scanner, on close inspection, you will find that there are color variations from segment to segment and there are seams that don't exactly match. This what to expect when you scan very large documents in pieces and then glue them together electronically. Jamaica before 1655 Before there were parishes, Jamaican territories looked roughly like the map below. Yallahs and Morant were names of large Spanish ranches. Guanaboa was an Arawak name. Liguanea is still used to refer to lower St. Andrew. Traces of these older names can still be found. From 1510 to 1535 the capital was Seville. With the exception of a one year period starting in 1755, Spanish Town was the capital from 1535 to 1872. Kingston was the capital for that brief period and also since 1872. For genealogical purposes, this map can be ignored. Antique Map Jamaica - by Tomas o Porcacchi - published 1572 Antique Map de Cuba et de Iamaica - by Alain Mallet - published 1683

Jamaica Facts
  • Jamaica has a population of 2.75 million people and is a third world country. Since gaining its independence from Britain, Jamaica has changed from a peaceful tropical paradise to a poverty-stricken, war torn island of garrison communities and political factions. Kingston, Jamaica's capital has a population of just over one million and 500,000 of these people live in the ghetto. Violence is rife. Kingston has the third highest murder rate in the world. Unemployment is high and literacy levels are low. Handicapped children are routinely abandoned, as parents are unable to cope. Jamaica's economy is narrowly based on bauxite, sugar, and tourism. It is particularly vulnerable to world commodity price fluctuations and weather. Jamaica also has a high debt position and a shortage of investment capital. Although labor is generally available at a low cost, there is a shortage of skilled labor that requires firms to look abroad for technical and managerial personnel and makes it even harder to attract outside investment capital. Drug trafficking plays a significant role in Jamaica's underground economy and drug related activity has had a deleterious effect on the general social, political, and business climate in the country.

History Arawaks were the first inhabitants of Jamaica, which they called Xaymaca, meaning "isle of springs." Columbus first glimpsed the north coast of the island in May 1494, landing in Montego Bay before he sailed back to Cuba. When he returned nine years later, stormy weather damaged two of his ships, and he was forced to anchor at St. Anne's Bay, where he and his men were marooned until the governor of Hispaniola retrieved them.

Jamaica - Brief History Discovered by Columbus in 1494 and first settled (1509) by Spaniards, Jamaica was captured by England in 1655; formal cession was in 1670. A large African slave population worked sugar plantations in the 18th century when Jamaica was a leading sugar producer. The decline of sugar after the abolition (1838) of slavery created economic hardship, civil unrest, and British suppression (1865-84) of local autonomy. Rioting, sparked by poverty and British racial policies, recurred periodically, reaching a peak in 1938. In 1944 universal adult suffrage was introduced. After a brief period (1958-62) as part of the West Indies Federation, in 1962 Jamaica became an independent member of the Commonwealth. After 1972 a move toward socialism under Prime Minister Michael Manley led to violence between extremist factions and produced an economic crisis. Edward Seaga, a moderate, took office in 1980 and restored some measure of economic stability. In 1989 Manley's party returned to power with a more conservative program. Manley resigned in 1992, due to ill health, and was succeeded by P.J. Patterson, who subsequently won his own electoral mandate in 1993.

History of Jamaica
The Long Road to Freedom and
Prosperity in Jamaican History.

Jamaican history began with the migration of the Arawak Indians from the South America area in about 650 AD. They named the lush island "Xaymaca" which meant "land of wood and water". Of course, centuries later, this island paradise became known as Jamaica, a jewel of the Caribbean. The Arawaks were a peaceful indigenous people that thrived in harmony until the Spanish occupation in 1494. The adverse impact on the Arawak by the Spanish invasion was devastating to its existence. Through plunder and killing by the Spanish, combined with new-brought disease, the indigenous Arawak became extinct. Only a few artifacts remain in Jamaican museums. The Spanish and their slaves fell upon Jamaica and used it as a base for their conquest in the Americas, particularly of Mexico in search of the treasures of gold and silver. The core population of the Spanish and their slaves was primarily centered in a Jamaican area they called "Town of Santiago le la Vega" which would centuries later be named "Spanish Town". The architecture of original buildings is still evident today. In 1655 the British captured Jamaica from the Spanish who did little to defend its occupation because Jamaica offered no riches of gold and silver. The Spanish fled Jamaica to other areas of the Caribbean, Mexico and South America in pursuit of riches and new conquests. Before fleeing they released and armed their slaves that became known as "Maroons". The Maroons mostly sought refuge from the British in the Jamaican area just south of what is known today as Montego Bay. As fierce defenders, the Maroons were never controlled by the British and even became self-governing in some areas.

After Christopher Columbus ' arrival in 1494, Spain claimed the island and began occupation in 1509, naming the island Santiago . The Arawaks were exterminated by disease, slavery , and war. Spain brought the first African slaves to Jamaica in 1517. The 1907 Catholic Encyclopedia states, "A review of the period of Spanish occupation is one which reflects very little credit on Spanish colonial administration in those days. Their treatment of the aboriginal inhabitants, whom they are accused of having practically exterminated, is a grave charge, and if true, cannot be condoned on the plea that such conduct was characteristic of the age, and that as bad or worse was perpetrated by other nations even in later years." This is borne out by the much more detailed history of Spanish Jamaica by Francisco Morales Padr³n. In May 1655, British forces in the form of a joint expedition by

History of Jamaica's Football Some of the records available indicates that football (soccer) was introduced in Jamaica towards the end of the 19th century and 1893 is listed as the year Jamaica formed it's first football club. Jamaica's first international appearance was against their Caribbean neighbors Haiti in 1925. They were invited to the French-speaking Caribbean island by Andre Chevalon, president of the then United Sporting Society and it was for a three-match series between the two countries. Jamaica won all three games by 1-0, 2-1 and 3-0. The following year Jamaica hosted their Haitians counterparts at Sabina Park and won by 6-0. The Haitians remained frequent opponents and it was not until 1932 that their run of defeats was broken with a 4-1 home win in Port-au-Prince.
