CNN Access: Aristide alleges a U.S. coup
(CNN) Former Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide left the Central African Republic early Monday, presumably for Jamaica. Aristide fled to the Central African Republic after resigning and leaving his turbulent country February 29 in the face of an advancing rebel insurgency. He flew out from Bangui's international airport with several aides. "Mr. Aristide has expressed a wish to return temporarily to the Caribbean with his wife and to be reunited with their two young children who are currently in the United States," says a statement on Jamaican Prime Minister P.J. Patterson's Web site. "At his request, arrangements are being made for his travel and accommodation in Jamaica." "His stay in Jamaica is not expected to be in excess of eight to 10 weeks," the statement said. Patterson's statement says Aristide is not seeking political asylum in Jamaica, but will seek permanent residence outside the Caribbean region.

Jamaica looks forward after violence
A street vendor who says he was caught in the crossfire during recent clashes shows his wounds By Susan Candiotti CNN Correspondent KINGSTON, Jamaica (CNN) More than a week after bullets flew in and around Kingston, Jamaicans were wondering if the deadly violence could spark true reforms in a political system some say has been plagued with problems for decades. At least 22 people were killed and 40 wounded in the violence that began July 8 during a police weapons sweep in a neighborhood considered a stronghold of government opposition groups. Police said snipers fired first, launching the battle, but residents claimed it was the other way around and accused authorities of shooting indiscriminately into crowded residential areas. The Jamaican military moved in on July 10 to quell the disturbance. Jamaican Prime Minister P.J. Patterson took to the national airwaves and announced under pressure from the opposition the formation of a commission of inquiry to look into the causes of the gun battles.

An interview with the author archived at Salonmagazine.com's website.

T H E S A L O N I N T E R V I E W By DWIGHT GARNER J amaica Kincaid tall, striking, clear-eyed turns heads when she strides into the lobby of New York's swank Royalton Hotel one chilly day in mid-December. It's not that she is trying very hard, dressed comfortably as she is in rumpled khakis, green blazer, and a mustard-colored bandana. Kincaid simply projects a natural authority that attracts attention, and that spills over into her writing. Over the course of only four books the novels "Annie John" (1985) and "Lucy" (1990), the short story collection "At the Bottom of the River" (1984), and her nonfiction book about her native Antigua titled "A Small Place" (1988) Kincaid has carved out a unique place in the American literary landscape. Writing in spare, deceptively simple prose, her fiction vividly and often harrowingly describes the difficult coming-of-age of strong-minded girls who, very much like herself, were born into tropical poverty. Kincaid now lives in Bennington, Vermont with her husband, the composer Allen Shawn, and their two children. In her precise, elegant British West Indies accent, Kincaid spoke freely about her life and work, notably her recent decision to quit her longtime position as a staff writer for The New Yorker which she now describes as "a version of People magazine" and her relationship with Tina Brown. "She's actually got some nice qualities," Kincaid says about her former editor. "But she can't help but be attracted to the coarse and vulgar. I wish there was a vaccine I would sneak it up on her."

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (CNN) Haiti's interim government Monday recalled its ambassador to Jamaica, shortly before ousted Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide arrived there, the Haitian prime minister's office said. The move was widely seen as an expression of the government's disapproval that Jamaica is allowing the exiled Aristide and his wife to travel there. Aristide landed Monday in Kingston, and was immediately taken by Jamaican officials to Montego Bay. A spokesman for Haitian Prime Minister Gerard Latortue said Haiti will stop short of freezing diplomatic relations with Jamaica. Latortue has refused to meet with Aristide and has said that the exiled Haitian leader's return to the region would only help to heighten tensions in his homeland. Aristide arrived in Jamaica from the Central African Republic, where he has been living since leaving his turbulent country February 29 in the face of an advancing rebel insurgency.

Streets of Jamaica appears calm
Police patrolled the streets of Kingston on Tuesday KINGSTON, Jamaica (CNN) The streets of Jamaica's capital appeared calm Tuesday night after soldiers in tanks, in armored vehicles and on foot spread out across the city on orders from the prime minister to restore order after days of violence. At least 22 people have died in gunbattles since Saturday, including two police officers and a soldier. Dozens of others have been wounded. As night fell in the capital, the minister of national security, K.D. Knight, said the situation was back to normal. However, many observers were watching and waiting to see whether rival gangs would clash yet again. Police said gunfire was sporadic throughout the day in sharp contrast from the weekend violence. Errol Beckford, the chief executive officer of Kingston Public Hospital, said the hospital had so many wounded over the weekend that some nurses fainted. "It's been traumatic. The majority of our staff are trained to cope with traumas of this nature. They have advised me this is the worst yet," he said.

Hutton researching new book on history of Jamaican music
Basil Walters, Observer staff reporter
Tuesday, August 02, 2005
HUTTON. has been interviewing pioneers of Jamaican music Caribbean scholar Dr Clinton Hutton is now doing research for a new book on the history and development of Jamaican music which, he expects, will be completed in two years. "I've got a fellowship from the university (of the West Indies) for two years to do research and write a book called The Social and Aesthetic Foundation of Popular Jamaican Music 1952 to 1972," Dr Hutton told the Sunday Observer. "It is essentially to really look at what was the basis - the social and aesthetic basis - for the music, how it came about, how it developed," added Hutton. "And so I've been interviewing a lot of the pioneers in the music right across the board." Hutton said he had already interviewed 20 of the 100 persons he has identified for information to put the book together - persons who had a ringside seat, so to speak, at the birth of the music. Among them are the late Clement "Sir Coxsone" Dodd of Studio One fame, with whom Hutton spoke for six hours; Headley Jones; Headley Bennett; Ernest Ranglin and Johnny "Dizzy Johnny" Moore.

Between 1998 and 2005, daily ridership fell on the #39 bus by 17% from 17,400 to 14,400. ( Jamaica Plain Gazette , Aug. 12) Viewed in context, this is a significant loss that argues strongly for restoring one-seat Arborway Green Line service to Park Street.

Jamaican capital 'relatively quiet'
By Susan Candiotti CNN Correspondent KINGSTON, Jamaica (CNN) The streets of Jamaica's capital were "relatively quiet" Wednesday after the Jamaican military moved in to halt running gunbattles between politically linked street gangs. At least 22 people have died in gunbattles since Saturday, including two police officers and a soldier. At least 38 others have been wounded. Deputy Superintendent of Police James Forbes said, "We've had no problems" as he summed up police operations overnight into Wednesday morning. But he added that the number of dead and injured is likely to go up as the cleanup continues. RESOURCES On the scene: Susan Candiotti reports on violence in Jamaica "We do know these figures will go up. We expect them to go up," he said. Debris still littered the streets around Tivoli Gardens and West Kingston, the center of the violence. Some people were back on the streets Wednesday, but police said foot and car traffic was far from normal. Several vendors opened their stalls at Coronation Market, usually one of West Kingston's busiest markets. Several of the vendors said they remain afraid the fighting will erupt again. But Angela Williams, a clerk at a liquor store, said, "Everything has returned to normal. The last few days have been very rough."
