WORLDGUIDE Introduction See Image Gallery Events Transport Money Essential Info RELATED Thorn Tree Forum Postcards Travel Links Ever since Errol Flynn cavorted here with his Hollywood pals in the 1930s and '40s, travellers have regarded Jamaica as one of the most alluring of the Caribbean islands. Its beaches, mountains and carnal red sunsets regularly appear in the sort of tourist brochures that promise paradise. Unlike other nearby islands, it caters to all-comers: you can choose a private villa with your own private beach; laugh your vacation away at a party-hearty resort; throw yourself into the thick of the island's life, or concentrate on experiencing the three Rs: reggae, reefers and rum. From May 5, 1494, when Columbus first set foot on what he described as "the fairest isle that eyes have beheld," to its emergence as an independent state on August 6, 1962, Jamaica passed through three main periods. First, it served for nearly 150 years as a Spanish-held way station for galleons en route to and from the Spanish Main. Second, from the mid-1600s until the abolition of slavery in 1834, it was a sugar-producing, slave-worked plantation society. Thereafter it was a largely agricultural, British colony peopled mainly by black peasants and workers.
The Spanish adventurer Juan de Esquivel settled the island in 1509, calling it Santiago, the name given it by Columbus. In the period of Spanish dominance from 1509 to 1655, the Spaniards exploited the island's precious metals and eradicated the Arawaks, who succumbed to imported diseases and harsh slavery (see The Pre- European Population, ch. 1). An English naval force sent by Oliver Cromwell attacked the island in 1655, forcing the small group of Spanish defenders to capitulate in May of that year (see The European Settlements, ch. 1). Within 3 years, the English had occupied the island, whose population was only about 3,000, but it took them many years to bring the rebellious slaves under their control. Cromwell increased the island's white population by sending indentured servants and prisoners captured in battles with the Irish and Scots, as well as some common criminals. This practice was continued under Charles II, and the white population was also augmented by immigrants from the North American mainland and other islands, as well as by the English buccaneers. But tropical diseases kept the number of whites well under 10,000 until about 1740.

The island was inhabited by Arawak Indians prior to the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1494. A few years later, it was formally colonized by the Spanish whose rule lasted until 1655. They were displaced by the British who turned Jamaica into the most important of the British Caribbean slaving colonies. Within 100 years, virtually the whole island had been divided up into large plantations owned by absentee landlords and worked by forced labor imported from West Africa. After the abolition of slavery in 1834, Jamaica became relatively prosperous under orthodox colonial rule until the early 20th century when a spate of natural disasters, compounded by the depression of the 1930s, sent the economy into decline.
Government
The head of state is the British monarch, represented by a Governor General who has nominal and rarely used powers. The 60-member House of Representatives, which is responsible for legislation, is elected every five years by universal suffrage. An upper house, the Senate, has 21 appointees to ratify legislation.

A ir Jamaica began operations in 1966 as the first Jamaican based international airline. It was governed by a tripartite agreement between the Government of Jamaica, BWIA, and BOAC (now British Airways). However, on April 1, 1969, Air Jamaica Limited was born with the Government of Jamaica holding majority shares in the airline. Air Canada held a minority interest and provided equipment, technology, training, pilots, and some top management. Then in 1984, the Jamaican Government acquired the airline through a “buy back” agreement with Air Canada. Ten years later, in 1994, the Government of Jamaica embarked on a privatization exercise. The Gordon “Butch” Stewart led Air Jamaica Acquisition Group (AJAG) acquired majority ownership of the national airline with the government retaining a minority stake.
I n 2004, after severe turbulence in the airline industry and massive financial losses, the Government of Jamaica reclaimed full control of the airline.

Jamaica's History
Caribbean Paradise Endures Christopher Columbus sighted the island of Jamaica during his second voyage, and it became a Spanish colony in 1509. Saint Jago de la Vega (now Spanish Town) was founded about 1523. Colonization was slow under Spanish rule. Jamaica was captured by an English naval force under Sir William Penn in 1655. The island was formally tran sferred to England in 1670. During the final decades of the 17th century, growing numbers of English immigrants arrived; the sugar, cacao, and other agricultural and forest industries were rapidly expanded; and the consequent demand for plantation labor led to large-scale importation of black slaves. Jamaica soon became one of the principal slave-trading centers in the world. But, by 1838, slavery was abolished by parliamentary legislation, and $30 million was granted as compensation to the owners of the nearly 310,000 liberated slaves.
Large numbers of the freed blacks abandoned the plantations following emancipation and took possession of unoccupied lands in the interior, gravely disrupting the economy. Labor shortages, bankrupt plantations, and declining trade resulted in a protracted economic crisis. Oppressive taxation, discriminatory acts by the courts, and land-exclusion measures ultimately caused widespread unrest among the black population.

Montego Bay Jamaica Information and History
Montego Bay is the capital of the Parish of St. James and the second city in Jamaica. The Spanish began to settle in Montego Bay after 1510 in the area of the Fort and they called the Bay "Bahia de Mantega" because of the large quantities of pigs' lard they exported to their colonies in South America and the West Indies. With the British occupation of Jamaica in 1655, St. James was among the second group of Parishes founded in 1671. Montego Bay was a small town for the first part of the 18th century, and up until 1788 was exempt of taxes, but this soon changed. A while after 1720 a Captain Jonathan Barnett sub-divided a portion of his sugar cane fields and created Charles Town , with Charles Square now called Sam Sharpe Square , and Barnett Town This resulted in the rapid expansion of the town and its commercial waterfront, as during this time most trade and communication was by sea. Fort Montego , is approximately half a mile from Montego Bay. It was built on a small bluff overlooking what was then
