Jamaica Government looking at seven percent inflation Jamaica's Finance Minister Dr. Omar Davies The Jamaica government says it is looking at a whopping seven percent inflation rate for this fiscal year but hopes to reduce the rate over the next two years by at least one to two percent. Finance and Planning Minister Dr. Omar Davies made the announcement during the opening of the Budget Debate in Gordon House on April 17th. But Dr. Davies also declared that the government was working to attain a balanced budget by 2005/06. Dr. Davies, according to a JIS release, said the current rate of 7.3 per cent is actually a drop compared to 8.8 per cent for 2001. This he said marked the sixth consecutive calendar year of inflation below 10 per cent. "We have to go back 40 years to find a comparable period," he said. The Jamaica government expects to achieve its goals by among other plans, eliminating payment for leave not taken by public sector workers. Dr. Davies said all new civil service employees are being employed with drastically reduced leave entitlements. He disclosed that those civil servants who had been employed for longer periods would benefit from performance based promotions, which would be introduced on a pilot basis in the Ministry of Finance and Planning, the Office of the Prime Minister, the Cabinet Office, the Office of the Services Commissions, the Ministry of Transport and Works and the Ministry of Local Government. "It will be extended service-wide by April 2004," he added.

The largest of the British West Indian islands, is situated in the Caribbean Sea, between latitude 17 deg. 43 min. and 18 deg. 32 min. N., and longitude 76 deg. 11 min. and 78 deg. 30 min. W. It is 90 miles south of Cuba, 100 west of Haiti, and 554 miles from Colon. The nearest point of the continent of America is about 400 miles southwest of the island. Its area is 4207.5 square miles, of which about 646 are flat, consisting of alluvium, marl, and swamp. There are some mineral deposits in the island, the most abundant being copper. The surface of the island is very mountainous, almost 2000 square miles of it being above an altitude of 1000 feet. The culminating point, Blue Mountain Peak, is 7360 feet high.

The Arawaks (or Taino People) were the original inhabitants, but unfortunately, these peace-loving Indians were wiped out either by disease or decree.

Government Information about Jamaica:
Jamaica became an independent member of the Commonwealth of Nations in 1962. Executive power within Jamaica's government lies with a cabinet headed by a prime minister responsible to the parliament. Jamaica was discovered by Christopher Columbus on May 4, 1494, and was subsequently settled by the Spanish, who ruled the island until 1655, when it was captured by a British expedition. Formal British control was confirmed in 1670. Arawak Indians, who inhabited the island at the time of Columbus's arrival, had died out, so African slaves were imported to work the sugarcane fields. With the abolition of slavery in Jamaica in 1833, the plantations declined and the former slaves took to peasant farming. In 1958, Jamaica formed the West Indies Federation with nine other British possessions, but it withdrew in 1961, a move that led to the eventual collapse of the federation. Jamaica's withdrawal was urged by Sir Alexander Bustamante, a labor leader who became prime minister when Jamaica achieved full independence in 1962. Michael Manley, leader of the People's National party (PNP), became prime minister in 1972 and instituted wide-ranging socialist changes. The resulting trade deficit brought Jamaica near bankruptcy by 1980, forcing new elections that brought the conservative Labor party, led by Edward P. G. SEAGA, to power. Reelected in 1983, Seaga was defeated by Manley in 1989 elections. Manley, who during his second term adopted free-market economic policies, resigned in 1992 due to ill health. He was succeeded as party head and prime minister by Percival J. Patterson, who led the PNP to a landslide victory in 1993 elections.
