In addition to a wide range of fire burn tunes, from 1970s roots to 21 st century dancehall, the show contains samples of many Jamaican artists commenting on the uses of fire for destruction, and for purification. The "great controversy" about Fire Burn lyrics has been growing for several years. Island Debates National Hero Status for Reggae Superstar
By Howard Campbell, IPS, 18 April 2000. Around the world the dreadlocked image of reggae music popularised by Bob Marley is synonymous with Jamaica, the island where he was born 55 years ago. But for many Jamaicans, Marley's international acclaim does not mean that he is any kind of role model for the country.

Looking for more information about Jamaica? Check out our extensive directory of helpful online resources. Beautiful Jamaica
This is a unique coffee-table book and a great gift item, full of information about the picturesque island of Jamaica. Nature's beautiful gifts are to be found everywhere; but nowhere else has nature lavished so much enduring and incredible beauty as on the Caribbean island of Jamaica. This book is full of information about Jamaica's past and present heroes, government, social structure, industries, food, outstanding citizens.....presenting Jamaicans as they see themselves. Nature's beautiful gifts...expressed in the grandeur of its blue tinted mountains....in the variegated splashes of colour in its lush green valleys...in its picturesque plains of waving canefields...in the artist's dream that are golden sunsets. In these and many other ways, Nature's hand rests lovingly on Jamaica giving the island breathtaking beauty to spare. “Beautiful Jamaica” was conceived to fill that need. Here in one package is Jamaica as Jamaicans see their little world; as they wish it to be seen by the wider world. In the richness of its lore, the magnetism of its charm and the vitality of its people.

Jamaica: one love, no problem
by Mary Mihaly The island of Jamaica is a popular vacation spot. Here's what you need to know to stay healthy and safe while enjoying this Caribbean destination. Spend one day in Jamaica, mon, and you will understand that, of all the Caribbean islands, it is the most complete. With a cuisine unmatched in that part of the world, music that is felt rather than heard, plantation "great houses" that whisper of ancient passions and crimes, and cool mountain peaks hovering above tropical beaches, Jamaica is an original. It is an island country born of diversity. When I am there, frankly, I am transformed. The first Jamaicans were Arawak Indians, all of whom died soon after the Spaniards settled there, either from overwork or from European diseases against which they had no immunity. The Spaniards, and later the English, imported African slaves to work the sugar cane plantations and later Chinese indentured servants. Every aspect of Jamaica's culture reflects this diverse heritage”hence the island's motto, "Out of Many, One People."
Diverse landscape
Jamaica's mountains are so close to the beach communities, and seem so walkable, that casual hikers commonly make the mistake of trying to tackle them without the appropriate gear. Many people are surprised to learn that a forest-covered central mountain range runs the 146-mile length of the island, and Blue Mountain Peak is 7,402 feet high. Almost half of Jamaica, in fact, is above 1,000 feet.

Jamaica at a Glance... Jamaica provides a fascinating study abroad opportunity for those looking for a diverse and challenging Caribbean experience. While Jamaica is traditionally pictured as a Caribbean paradise, the island also has a rich cultural heritage to offer to willing students. Jamaica's civilization began with the Carib and Arawak Indians long before the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1494. After Columbus, the island became a Spanish colony, and after 1655, a British colony. Under the British it became famous for its wealthy sugar plantations, which required the importation of an extensive number of slaves from Africa. (Over 90% of Jamaica's current-day population is of African descent.) With the emancipation of the slaves in 1938, the plantations then began to utilize indentured labor from India and China. Jamaica gained freedom from the United Kingdom in August of 1962, but remains a member of the British Commonwealth. Today, the island's economy is heavily dominated by services, with industries such as tourism and bauxite mining contributing a significant proportion of the country's income. Sugar remains important to the economy, as does the rum that is a byproduct. Jamaica's Blue Mountain coffee is also famous worldwide.

Jamaica: Prime Minister, Ruling Party Call for National Debate on Ganja Decrim The pace of events is quickening in Jamaica. Since the parliament-appointed National Ganja Commission issued its August report calling for the decriminalization of the personal use of marijuana ( http://www.drcnet.org/wol/189.html#ganjacommission ), much political jockeying has taken place within the government and the ruling Peoples National Party (PNP). But on October 1, the party's National Executive Council, meeting in Ocho Rios, formally endorsed Prime Minister P. J. Patterson's call for a parliamentary debate on whether or not to decriminalize ganja. That debate should come later this fall and will lay the groundwork for a parliamentary vote on the matter. According to the Jamaica Observer, Patterson told the council that he agreed with the recommendations of the National Ganja Commission, but that they carry implications that need to be fully discussed and carefully evaluated. Patterson referred to the lack of provisions for lawful access to ganja, as well as the need for diplomatic efforts to avoid international repercussions. The ruling party's decision to place decriminalization on the parliamentary calendar came only after internal sparring amidst lively press coverage since the commission's report. Early last month, a group of young intellectuals aligned with the PNP, known as the Patriots, urged the government to take a cautious approach to the proposal. The Patriots warned of an international fall-out referring primarily the threat of US decertification next spring and pointed to international treaties barring the legalization of drug use.
