1. I’ve heard about Jain people starving themselves to death. What is the story behind this? Sallekhana is known as a religious death in Jainism. It does involve a gradual process of the cessation of consumption of food. However, it is a very sacred and controlled process; it must be performed by a person who truly understands central principles and by one who has committed to certain vows. The following is a description of sallekhana from Paul Dundas: In light of the general Indian belief that the last moment of life has a decisive bearing on the state of an individual’s next birth and the specifically Jain teaching about the possibility of the destruction of karma through gradual withdrawal from mental and physical activity, it is hardly surprising that Jainism views the ideal mode of death as being a form of highly controlled wasting away through fasting.

Jainism
General Information Jainism is a religious faith of India that is usually said to have originated with Mahavira, a contemporary of the Buddha (6th century BC). Jains, however, count Mahavira as the last of 24 founders, or Tirthamkaras, the first being Rishabha. In 1990 the number of Jains worldwide was estimated at 3,650,000, almost all of whom live in India. Jainism has been present in India since Mahavira's time without interruption, and its influence has been significant. The major distinction within Jainism is between the Digambara and Svetambara sects, a schism that appears to date from about the 1st century AD. The major difference between them is that whereas the Svetambaras wear white clothes, the Digambaras traditionally go naked. Fundamentally, however, the views of both sects on ethics and philosophy are identical. The most notable feature of Jain ethics is its insistence on noninjury to all forms of life. Jain philosophy finds that every kind of thing has a soul; therefore strict observance of this precept of nonviolence (ahimsa) requires extreme caution in all activity. Jain monks frequently wear cloths over their mouths to avoid unwittingly killing anything by breathing it in, and Jain floors are kept meticulously clean to avert the danger of stepping on a living being. Jains regard the intentional taking of life, or even violent thoughts, however, as much more serious. Jain philosophy posits a gradation of beings, from those with five senses down to those with only one sense.

AHIMSA AND NON-VEGETARIAN FOOD
The Question of consuming meat and non-vegetarian foods has been object of much criticism since past several centuries. Even today though quite a large number of Hindus along with Muslims and Christians consume meat, there are large numbers of people who prefer to be strictly vegetarian throughout their life. For some it is a religious injunction to abstain from non-vegetarian food. Whereas some make it a political issue saying Garv se kaho hum shakahari hain! (i.e. say proudly we are vegetarian). Those who insist on being pure vegetarian, feel that it is ruthless to kill the animals for feeding ourselves. Lets have comparative study of concept of Ahimsa in Jainism and rationale behind permission of non-vegetarian food in Islam, So let us analyse this subject under the guidance of. religious scriptures and using reason, logic and science. (By Pravin Shah of Raleigh, NC. Received in January-2001)
Introduction:
Jainism is one of the oldest living religions of India. It predates recorded history as per references indicated in Hindu scriptures. It is an original system, quite distinct and independent from other systems of
Indian philosophy. Jainism is a religion of purely human origin and is preached and practiced by one who has attained perfect knowledge, omniscience and self-control by his own personal efforts and has been liberated from the bonds of worldly existence, the cycle of births and deaths. Such human beings are considered Gods of Jainism. The concept of God as a creator, protector, and destroyer of the universe does not exist in Jainism. Also the idea of God's reincarnation as a human being to destroy the demons is not accepted in Jainism. In summary Jainism does not believe in creator God, but it is not an atheistic religion because it believes in many Gods who are self realized individuals and who have attained liberation. In ancient times it was known by many names such as Saman tradition, or the religion of Nirgantha, or Jina.

What is Jainism? religious system of India practiced by about 5,000,000 persons. Jainism,Ajivika, and Buddhism arose in the 6th cent. B.C. as protests against the overdeveloped ritualism of Hinduism , particularly its sacrificial cults, and the authority of the Veda. Jaina tradition teaches that a succession of 24 tirthankaras (saints) originated the religion. The last, Vardhamana, called Mahavira [the great hero] and Jina [the victor], seems to be historical. He preached a rigid asceticism and solicitude for all life as a means of escaping the cycle of rebirth, or the transmigration of souls. Thus released from the rule of karma Adapted from Questia

Families of Religions Jainism No deity Vardhamana Mahavira, born in India around 540 BCE, took up a wandering ascetic life. Having achieved omniscience after years of suffering, he began to teach others and organized followers into groups of monks, nuns, laymen and laywomen. There is an eternal pattern of rise and fall in the universe and each age has twenty four teachers who help people escape the cycle of reincarnation. Jain temples have a seated image of a particular teacher. Worship of the image is to happen every day, usually in the morning. The five basic principles are: avoid doing harm, truthfulness, no stealing, chastity, and detachment from material things. Links: Jain World Jain information and links.

The Temples of Orissa Religious Background Jainism Jainism is the name given to the religious movement of the Jains, whose community follows the religious path established by Vardhaman Mahavira, a prophet also known as the Jina or Victor. Born in Northern Bihar, Mahavira is alleged to have preached in the 6th century BC. The 6th century BC constitutes a very remarkable chapter in the Cultural history of India by reason of the fact that there was a great religious upheaval and intellectual uprising in the country. It witnessed the emergence of two international religions of capital importance - Jainism and Budhism propounded by Mahavira and Buddha respectively. These two highly developed forms of religions excercised a profound Cultural influence not only in the different parts of India but also in her neighbouring regions to the east and west. This is in fact the most significant contribution of India to the world civilisation. Jainism in Orissa started in 6th century BC, during this period Jainism was the state religion of Kalinga. This is evidenced by a number of literary sources. Besides, this is also corroborated by the unchallengable testimony of the Hathigumpha inscriptionof Kharavella. The 23rd Tirthankara Parsvanath is said to have visited Orissa and sermoned in his doctorine in some places of this land. It can be said undoubtedly that parsvanath was the first to preach Jainism in Kalinga. There is an intimate relationship between the name of Parsvanath and the ancient culture of Kalinga.

Religion of India established in the 6th century BC by Vardhamana, who was called Mahavira.
Jainism's core belief is ahimsa, or noninjury to all living things. It was founded as a reaction against the Vedic religion, which required animal sacrifices. Jainism has no belief in a creator god, though there are a number of lesser deities for various aspects of life. Jains believe their religion is eternal and hold that it was revealed in stages by a number of Conquerors, of whom Mahavira was the 24th.
Living as an ascetic, Mahavira preached the need for rigorous penance and self-denial as the means of perfecting human nature, escaping the cycle of rebirth, and attaining moksha, or liberation. Jains view karma as an invisible material substance that interferes with liberation and can only be dissolved through asceticism.
By the end of the 1st century AD the Jains had split into two sects, each of which later developed its own canon of sacred writings: the Digambaras, who held that an adherent should own nothing, not even clothes, and that women must be reborn as men before they can attain moksha; and the more moderate Svetambaras.

Jina is a human being and not a supernatural being or an incarnation of an all mighty God.  Some of the Jinas establish religious order, they are known as Tirthankara and there exist the spiritual lineage of the twenty-four Tirthankars of whom the ascetic sage Mahavir was the last.  All human beings have the potentiality to become Jina.

Jainism Twenty-Four Tirthankaras Just as Buddhism is associated with Buddhism. Lord Mahavir is linked to Jainism. However, most people are not aware that Jainism existed before Mahavir. However, his teachings were based on those of his predecessors. Thus, unlike Buddha, Mahavir was more of a reformer and propagator of an existing religious order than the founder of a new faith. In jainism there are twenty-four tirthankars and they are: 1) Shri. Rishab dev

Tirthankaras are also known as Arihants or Jinas. Lord Mahavir Lord Mahavir and Gautam Buddha have a remarkably similar history. Like Gautam Buddha, Mahavir too was from a royal family. He was born in 599 B.C. as a prince in Bihar. At the age of 30, he renounced his family and his luxurious life and became a monk. He spent the next twelve years in deep silence and meditation in a bid to overcome his material desires and baser feelings. He went without food for days at a stretch. He tried his best to avoid harming other living beings including animals, birds, and plants. At the end of twelve years, he realized perfect perception, knowledge, power, and bliss. This realization is known as keval-jnana.

Table of Contents Parallel to Buddhism another religion has flourished in India since ancient times. This is the Jaina religion or Jainism. The term Jaina or Jain implies follower of Jina which means 'the victorious one'. Jina is the formal title of the 24 spiritual teachers (Tirthankaras) of the Jaina religion. In this sense the term 'Jina' is similar to the term 'Buddha. Popularly, Mahavira who was the last Jaina Tirthankara is confounded to be the founder of this faith.
