Relativity Tutorial
Galilean Relativity
Relativity can be described using space-time diagrams . Contrary to popular opinion, Einstein did not invent relativity. Galileo preceded him. Aristotle had proposed that moving objects (on the Earth) had a natural tendency to slow down and stop. This is shown in the space-time diagram below.
Note the curved worldline above. This shows a variable velocity, or an acceleration . Galileo objected to Aristotle's hypothesis, and asked what happened to an object moving on a moving ship.
Now it is still moving in its final state. Galileo proposed that it is only relative velocities that matter. Thus a space-time diagram can be transformed by painting it on the side of a deck of cards, and then skewing the deck to one side but keeping the edges along a straight line:
Straight worldlines (unaccelerated particles) remain straight in this process. Thus Newton's First Law is preserved, and non-accelerated worldlines are special. This Galilean transformation does not affect the time. Thus two observers moving with respect to each other can still agree on the time, and thus the distance between two objects, which is the difference in their positions measured at equal times, can be defined. This allowed Newton to describe an inverse square law for gravity. But Galilean transformations do not preserve velocity. Thus the statement "The speed limit is 70 mph" does not make sense but don't try this in court. According to relativity, this must be re-expressed as "The magnitude of the relative velocity between your car and the pavement must be less than 70 mph". Relative velocities are OK.

War (in a General Sense) Is Hell

Steven Bochco's Over There can't see the quagmire for the trees.
By Dana Stevens
Updated Wednesday, July 27, 2005, at 1:24 PM PT
Over There , the Steven Bochco-produced drama about the war in Iraq that premieres tonight at 10 p.m. ET on F/X, is being hailed everywhere as a groundbreaking television experiment – the first American series to fictionalize a war while that same war is actually going on. There's a sense, in much of the press coverage of the show, that its mere existence is somehow salutary. Kay McFadden of the Seattle Times calls the series a "worthy and much-needed endeavor," while the Houston Chronicle warns that it is "so well done that it may be too much for some viewers to handle." Aaron Barnhart, TV critic for the Kansas City Star and proprietor of the excellent television Web site TV Barn writes that Over There "crashes through television's complacency like a Humvee with the pedal to the metal." He's not entirely wrong—though the characters are stock and the plotting conventional, tonight's pilot does make for one of the most violent and wrenching hours of television I've ever watched, if only by virtue of its subject matter. Let's allow for the moment, then, that

Einstein was right...again!!!
Satellite observations of Black Holes confirm frame-dragging effect 80 years after prediction
November 6, 1997: T he next time you feel like you're barely dragging along, blame relativity. You'll be stretching the point, but it appears that Einstein was right: space and time get pulled out of shape near a rotating body. Einstein predicted the effect, called ``frame dragging,'' 80 years ago. Like many other aspects of Einstein's famous theories of relativity, it's so subtle that no conventional method could measure it. Using recent observations by X-ray astronomy satellites, including NASA's Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer , a team of astronomers is announcing that they see evidence of frame dragging in disks of gas swirling around a black hole. The discovery will be announced today at a meeting of the High Energy Astrophysics Division of the American Astronomical Society in Estes Park, Colo., by Dr. Wei Cui of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and his colleagues, Dr. Nan Zhang

Not giving up on diplomacy In a HARDtalk interview on 30 September, Tim Sebastian talks to Mohamed ElBaradei, Director General of the International Atomic Agency, about whether tougher action is needed on Iran over its nuclear activities.
Click here to watch the full interview In defiance of the International Atomic Agency (IAEA), Iran has announced it will continue preparations to enrich uranium. Enriched uranium can be used to make fuel for nuclear power or weapons. At its September 2004 meeting, the IAEA's Board of Governors demanded that Iran stop all enrichment activities and give a complete history of its nuclear programme by the 25th of November. The Agency has consistently reported Iran for failing to disclose all necessary information about its programme. Iran insists its nuclear programme is for peaceful means. As long as I don't see an imminent threat I'd like to pursue diplomacy and verification.

The OpenForum isn't run by rules, per se . Rather, it is moderated by a tight-knit group of moderators who have volunteered to put themselves in the position of making difficult judgment calls. Some of these Guidelines are more prohibitive, however, and they function as rules . The rules come in two-forms: the cardinal , and the compulsory

    Chapter 1
GENERAL PURPOSES AND PRACTICES; DEFINITIONS Standard 101. BASIC REQUIREMENTS FOR APPROVAL
A law school approved by the Association or seeking approval by the Association shall demonstrate that its program is consistent with sound legal education principles. It
does so by establishing that it is being operated in compliance with the Standards. Interpretation 101-1:
To enable the Accreditation Committee and Council to determine whether a law school has demonstrated that its program of legal education is consistent with sound legal education principles and is being operated in compliance with the Standards, a law school shall furnish an annual questionnaire, self-study, site evaluation questionnaire, and such other information as the Accreditation Committee and Council may require. These documents must be complete and accurate and submitted timely in the form specified.
The information provided by these means not only informs the Council about the status of each law school but also enables the Council, in meeting its obligations with respect to legal education as a whole, to ascertain national norms of legal education, areas in which improvements are being made, and those where further attention is needed.

Turns Out It's Not the Black Cats You Have to Watch Out For Published on November 20, 2001 Shortly after becoming Attorney General, John Ashcroft was headed abroad. An advance team showed up at the American embassy in the Hague to check out the digs, saw cats in residence, and got nervous. They were worried there might be a calico cat. No, they were told, no calicos. Visible relief. Their boss, they explained, believes calico cats are signs of the devil. (The advance team also spied a statue of a naked woman in the courtyard and discussed the possibility of its being covered for the visit, though that request was not ultimately made.) I reveal this tidbit not to belittle John Ashcroft’s faith or his prudishness, which are his own business, but because he has begun to meddle with my business. In the middle of the war on terrorism, he has somehow found time to move to overturn Oregon's twice-passed referendum on assisted suicide, to assure that an Oregonian in his final days should be forced to agonize as God intended. Likewise, for those nauseous with chemotherapy or in chronic pain, he works to overturn California’s referendum on medical marijuana, because – when you think of it – what right have the people of California to decide a matter of such importance for themselves?
