My Ballroom Dancing Page
Welcome to my page on ballroom dancing. I've been dancing for a while now and I figured that it's about time I made up my own page devoted solely to the one form of dancing that I enjoy. You'll find various things here including links to other pages, any good information I can find, stuff I feel like putting up here for my own information so that I know where it is and don't lose it, and anything else ballroom related that I want to put here. I have a separate page for information about my ballroom dancing , both socially and competitively, in case you're interested. Hopefully you'll find at least some of the information and links here useful.
The Dances and Styles
There are two main styles of ballroom dancing American and International. American style is danced primarily in, you guessed it, America. :) It's also not as standardized as International style, which is danced just about everywhere else in the world (and in the US, too). Here in the US where I am, American style tends to be used more often for social dancing while International style tends to be used primarily in competitions. This doesn't mean that you can't compete in American style or dance International style socially. Personally, I prefer International style and dance it socially all the time. :) People will dance either American or International style socially, as they choose, and competitions normally include both styles as well, so it's good to know both styles (at least in the US).

w Home General Council - Introduction Back General Council - Introduction The General Councils of the four "Ancient" Scottish universities are advisory bodies to their respective universities made up principally of all the graduates. They may "take into consideration all questions affecting the well-being and prosperity of the University" and "make representations from time to time on such questions to the University Court". These activities are carried out by half-yearly meetings whilst a Business Committee prepares the papers put forward to these meetings. The General Council is also charged with providing people to serve on the University Court, of whom there must be at least four, and of electing the Chancellor. The origins of the General Council lie in the reforming spirit of the 19th century. The universities at that time suffered from varying degrees of difficulty. Glasgow was relatively successful. It was felt that Aberdeen would benefit from the union of its two institutions. St Andrews was slowly recovering from the lean times of the 18th century but still had problems with dilapidated buildings. However, it was the problems of government at Edinburgh University, a dispute between the professors and the Town Council, ending in the courts, that led to the Royal Commission on the Universities and Colleges of Scotland, established in 1826. This Commission reported in 1831 after exhaustive work and recommended that university courts look after administrative and financial matters, while academic senates would determine matters related to teaching.

Derived media handler components allow the Movie Toolbox to play the data in a media. These components isolate the Movie Toolbox from the details of how or where a particular media is stored. This not only frees the Movie Toolbox from reading and writing media data, but also makes QuickTime extensible to new data formats. These components are referred to as derived components because they rely on the services of a common base media handler component, which is supplied by Apple. The base media handler component handles most of the duties that must be performed by all media handlers. Your derived media handler component extends the services provided by the base media handler. Erected: 1968 (office building) GM Building, the white one with vertical patterning, is not small By Carter B. Horsley
The relocation of the F.A.O. Schwarz toy store in 1990 into this huge tower from across 58th Street at 747 Fifth Avenue was an exuberant salvation and partial redemption of the building, which was one of the most outrageously bad examples of planning in the city's history. The full-block, 50-story General Motors tower, shown at the right in the center, replaced the Savoy Plaza Hotel, the original home in the city to Trader Vic's and, more importantly, a distinguished skyscraper hotel with a very large mansard roof that was the perfect complement to the Plaza Hotel, directly across the avenue, and Bergdorf Goodman, diagonally across the avenue. Together with the distinctive towers of the Sherry Netherlands and the Pierre hotels just to the north, this high-rise ensemble was the most elegant in the world and the most definitive part of New York after its skyline. It could almost be argued that it would have been better to replace the Plaza with the GM building than the Savoy Plaza in terms of urbanistic planning. Of course, the Plaza's interiors far surpassed those of the Savoy Plaza and its fame was wider.

Beyond the Limits of Space and Time
Robert Wedgeworth
In a world divided by ancient and modern conflicts, ravaged by natural and man-made disasters and humbled by its relationship to the universe, the General Conference of IFLA convenes once again to ce lebrate the world of knowledge and information. Istanbul, The city on the Bosphorus made famous as the meeting point of Europe and Asia, and Turkey, rich in archaeological treasures that link our civilization's past to the present, provide a splen did venue for the 61st IFLA Council and General Conference. Our theme, "Libraries of the Future," allows us to reflect on both the challenges and the opportunities that lie ahead. As we generate excitement about new programs, new technologies and fresh ideas , let us not forget the millions of people around the world trapped in a world of ignorance due to illiteracy and poverty. Our Conference Organizers have attracted an outstanding number of participa nts and a wealth of stimulating papers that will spark much discussion in the days and months ahead. The social and cultural program featuring some of the beautiful sights and sounds of this great c ity also await you. We hope you will enjoy it.
A CHANGING COMMUNITY
For libraries and librarians these are most interesting times. The entire chain of relationships that have sustained twentieth century libraries and librarians from author to bookseller to user is b eing transformed by economics and technology. Increasing costs of information resources and increasing types of information resources that can be acquired by libraries place increasing demands on li brary funding sources that are either stable or declining. Although the growth rate for new books in North America and western Europe has been modest since 1970, the growth in serial publications ha s been more dramatic. In spite of a decrease in new titles appearing since 1980, half of all currently active serial titles were first published in the last twenty years. In the past two decades on line databases have increased from around 300 to over 9000. Electronic information resources currently cost two to four times their print alternatives.

Embedding Diagrams
Picture a bowling ball on a stretched rubber sheet.
GIF Image
The large ball will cause a deformation in the sheet's surface. A baseball dropped onto the sheet will roll toward the bowling ball. Einstein theorized that smaller masses travel toward larger masses not because they are "attracted" by a mysterious force, but because the smaller objects travel through space that is warped by the larger object. Physicists illustrate this idea using embedding diagrams Contrary to appearances, an embedding diagram does not depict the three-dimensional "space" of our everyday experience. Rather it shows how a 2D slice through familiar 3D space is curved downwards when embedded in flattened hyperspace. We cannot fully envision this hyperspace; it contains seven dimensions, including one for time! Flattening it to 3D allows us to represent the curvature. Embedding diagrams can help us visualize the implications of Einstein's General Theory of Relativity.
The Flow of Spacetime
Another way of thinking of the curvature of spacetime was elegantly described by Hans von Baeyer. In a prize-winning

THE FIRST AMENDMENT AND FREEDOM OF THE PRESS
by James C. Goodale

Press Freedom Read more about Freedom of the Press
James C. Goodale served as general counsel to The New York Times when the U.S. Supreme Court decided that the Times could continue to publish the then-classified Pentagon Papers The First Amendment to the United States Constitution provides that "Congress shall make no law...abridging the freedom...of the press." Although the First Amendment specifically mentions only the federal Congress, this provision now protects the press from all government, whether local, state or federal. The founders of the United States enacted the First Amendment to distinguish their new government from that of England, which had long censored the press and prosecuted persons who dared to criticize the British Crown. As Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart explained in a 1974 speech, the "primary purpose" of the First Amendment was "to create a fourth institution outside the government as an additional check on the three official branches" (the executive branch, the legislature and the judiciary). Justice Stewart cited several landmark cases in which the Supreme Court the final arbiter of the meaning of the First Amendment has upheld the right of the press to perform its function as a check on official power. One of these cases the 1971 Pentagon Papers case lies especially close to my heart.

Umbilical Cord Blood Banks: A Worthwhile Investment?
By Amanda Onion, ABC News Reporter
THURSDAY, March 3, 2005 (ABC News) When she was pregnant with her first son, Tracey Dones and her husband, like many couples today, faced a tough decision: Was it worth the $500 to $1,800 fee and then annual payments up to $100 to have a private company bank blood from her child's umbilical cord? Like bone marrow, cord blood has been shown to be effective in therapeutic transplants to treat a range of diseases, including leukemia, lymphoma and various genetic disorders. The few teaspoons of blood drawn from an umbilical cord once it has been detached also contain stem cells, which hold further promise of treating a broader range of conditions in the future - minus the controversy now associated with embryonic stem cells. "In the end, I said to myself, how could we not do it?" Dones said about their decision to bank Anthony's cord blood. "It could save my child's life." But when Anthony was diagnosed with a rare genetic bone disorder at four months and needed a transplant, she learned his banked blood would not help. Those cells, her son's doctor explained, contained the same genetic defect that was causing his condition. "That's something the company didn't tell us," she said.
