Freed Italy priest tells of ordeal
Pierantoni: Freed after spending six months in the hands of a kidnap gang MANILA, Philippines An Italian priest rescued after nearly six months in captivity in the southern Philippines has attributed his release to the "miracle of prayer." Guiseppe Pierantoni, 44, who was seized in October from his rectory in Zamboanga del Sur province on Mindanao island, said he had to eat snakes and lizards in order to survive during his ordeal. "It was, I think, a miracle of prayer what happened to me," he told a news conference in Manila, "I am really very, very thankful and very grateful to God and also to the Filipino government. "I believe that after six months of living in the forest trying to escape... the police and the army, it was a miracle to be freed and without any harm, without any particular suffering." Pierantoni, who was pale and appeared to have lost weight, also said he felt tired and confused.

163. Tour Of Italy -The Arco Felice
Learn about this ancient arch that was built by the Romans in the 1st century A.D.
http://touritaly.org/arco/arco.htm
The Arco Felice
The Arco Felice is a landmark that dates back to ancient times. It was built by the Romans in the 1 st century A.D. during the construction of the Domitziana. (the road that connected Naples and Rome). Because the Roman's always tried to make their roads straight and level, they did not always choose the easiest path. In the case of the Arco Felice , they would not go around the hill nor would they go over it. They went straight through it! The arch was constructed to reinforce the hillside where the road cut through. Although the upper most portion of the arch has collapsed, the Arco Felice is still an impressive structure. The road that passes beneath the arch is paved with the original cobblestones. It is still in use today. However, because it was constructed in ancient times it is too narrow to allow two-way traffic, so two stop lights have been installed, one on either side of the arch. Traffic from each side passes in turn. NOTE : This is one of the few stoplights in the Naples area that is usually obeyed.)

In 1765 Laurence Sterne travelled through France and Italy as far south as Naples, and after returning determined to describe his travels from a sentimental point of view. The decision was probably come to on account of the success with which he had touched upon his earlier stay in France in Book VII. of Tristram Shandy. what was destined to be the last volume of Tristram Shandy was published in 1767, and the author at once turned his attention to a new project of four volumes describing A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy. By November, despite ill health, the first two volumes were finished, and at the close of the year he left his Coxwold parsonage and visited London to superintend the publication of them. The

Stop at Afghanistan, says Italy
Martino: No further action without proof ROME, Italy Italy is hopeful that the U.S. will not spread its war against terrorism beyond Afghanistan, Italian Defence Minister Antonio Martino told a NATO conference. "I am optimistic that there won't be another operation like the one in Afghanistan. The rogue states have learnt their lesson," Martino told Reuters. U.S. President George W. Bush said last week that the U.S. war against terrorism may expand, and he singled out Iraq, Iran and North Korea as an "axis of evil." Martino's comments came at a NATO-Russian convention on combatting terrorism attended by NATO Secretary-General George Robertson and Russian Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov. Robertson said after the behind-doors talks that NATO-Russia cooperation is a "central pillar" of the global struggle against terror the first common enemy in 60 years.

Italy vote 'will help Berlusconi'
Demonstrations against the bill outside Italy's Senate ROME, Italy Italy's Senate has passed by a hefty majority a bill that opposition leaders argue could help Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi in a corruption case tied to his business empire. The measure drew protests from dozens of people rallying outside the chamber, shouting "shame, shame," while senators in the centre-left opposition walked out in protest after the vote. The law, pushed rapidly through the Senate by sponsors from Berlusconi's conservative coalition, was passed by a 162-9 vote. The bill would allow defendants to ask for their trials to be annulled or moved to another court if they have "legitimate suspicion" that judges are biased against them. Berlusconi is on trial in Milan for allegedly bribing judges during the 1980s. He has long proclaimed his innocence and says he is the victim of prosecutors he contends sympathise with the left.
