Italy hunts suspected terrorists
Investigators fear Italy could be used as recruiting ground for attacks, such as this one north of Baghdad Story Tools SPECIAL REPORT The hunt for al Qaeda Bin Laden's audio message, 2/03 Terror warning system Terror on tape ... War against terror ROME, Italy (CNN) Milan prosecutors have issued arrest warrants for five North Africans suspected of recruiting people to carry out suicide attacks in Iraq and elsewhere. Hours later on Friday, police in Hamburg, Germany, said they had arrested an Algerian on one of the Italian warrants. The moves come the day after the arrest of a 24-year-old man in Gloucester, western England, and the discovery of small amounts of explosives. He is being questioned about suspected international terrorism links. ( Full Story CNN's Rome Bureau Chief Alessio Vinci said the arrests were "significant" because it had been thought that Italy had been used only for logistical purposes, such as a base for providing false documents or shelter. But the authorities are now investigating the possibility that Italy is being used to recruit and train terrorists for Iraq and elsewhere.

Mountainbike Tour in Italy
Our Italy tour this year (April 1995) visited two places, the Dolomites and Garda Lake not far to the southwest. Our Garda Lake excursions are described on a separate page
The map on the left is a detail of the Italy map on the right, of the yellow rectangle south of Bolzano and east of Trento.
M T. M ARMOLADA, D OLOMITES
Mt. Marmolada is a mountain in the Dolomites in Italian Alps. We stayed in a hotel and Arraba, a small village to the north of Mt. Marmolada. We used Arraba as a base for various day tours. This report describes the longest and most interesting one. The length was only about 130 km (could be wrong - someone told me it's only 65 km), with two passes at 2056 and 2239 meters, respectively. The map above shows the roads we took; we rode the loop clockwise. We used Mountainbikes, but the same tour can easily be ridden with road bikes. Many interesting others in the same area require mountainbikes, though. Mt. Marmolada is in the central Alps. Before I first went there I had this mental image of snow-capped peaks and vertical cliffs that could not possibly allow any reasonable bicycle riding. I found this is wrong, it's in fact fairly easy - if exhausting - to ride in the Alps because all the roads and trails avoid the really steep mountains and remain in the valleys and lower and less steep mountains. Riding in the Alps means rarely riding on either level or really steep roads, 4 or 5% is typical but it can reach 10% or more in places. Roads usually wind their way up or down in serpentines. I live in Berlin, which has only very minor hills, and I am a poor climber, but I found that I can manage a pass or two a day in the Alps without too many problems. The reward of the trouble is awesome scenery.

Martino told the Italian Senate the dead included 11 Italian Carabinieri military police and three army soldiers. Martino also mentioned a civilian but didn't elaborate. Italy battles to accept euro
ROME, Italy Strains have emerged in Italy over the birth of the euro, with long queues outside banks, stations and post offices, and citizens complaining about a shortage of coins. In Brussels, the European Commission said only three percent of Italy's cash transactions on January 2 were in euros the lowest in the eurozone with France and the Netherlands at the top with 50 percent and the average at 20 percent. While one commission spokesman pointed out it was not a race, another said it was not surprising that Italy was so far behind, since fewer cash dispensers were converted ahead of the changeover and many businesses chose not to receive euros in advance. Strains also emerged in the Italian government on Thursday, as Foreign Minister Renato Ruggiero attacked cabinet colleagues for belittling the ambitious project. VIDEO CNN's Richard Quest reports people in Frankfurt, Germany, are slowly but surely adapting to using the new Euro currency (January 1)

Italian authorities arrested Ocalan Thursday at the Rome airport after he arrived from Moscow, where he unsuccessfully sought political asylum after fleeing Syria. On Saturday, Ocalan officially filed a request for asylum in Italy, where many are sympathetic to the plight of the Kurds. Meanwhile

Red faces at Miss Italy contest
Story Tools YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Offbeat or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? ROME, Italy (Reuters) Rash-reddened cheeks, puffy eyes and tears of despair not quite the look contestants at the Miss Italy semi-finals might have hoped for on their big night, but exactly what many of them got. Decorative metallic patterns stuck onto the girls' skin combined with heat and sweat may have triggered the nasty skin reaction in 40 of the 100 contestants at the weekend event, Italian media reported Monday. "It will last 72 hours at the most. Of course it depends on the individual reaction of each person but with treatment it should be gone fairly soon," Rome-based daily Il Messaggero quoted dermatologist Benedetto Marinangeli as saying. But while the cheeks might soon recover, damaged pride may take longer to heal and Il Messaggero said some of the contestants were considering legal action. Organizers of the event were quick to say that the make-up misfortune had no effect on the end results as finalists had already been chosen before the rashes flared.

It will fall to the Italians, led by their controversial Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, to host an inter-governmental conference beginning in October to settle the details of the new European constitution. This follows the report of a constitutional convention led by former French President Valery Giscard d'Estaing.

    Millie Garfield BACKGROUND
Below is a summary of activities and links to organizations. I belong to a group of writers dubbed the Wild Writing Women. We began as a writing group to encourage each other to write and publish. A decade ago there was one book and a smattering of articles to our collective name. Now we've published over 25 books and hundreds, maybe thousands of articles. Our common genre is travel writing but we write on a variety of topics from technology to dance, politics to romance. In 2004 the group started a business so that we could officially give conferences and other activities. There are five women currently involved in the business: Lisa Alpine, Jacqueline Harmon Butler, Pamela Michael, Cathleen Miller, and me. We meet once a month to discuss writing, read and critique stories, and have dinner and stay up late and laugh. W5 stands for Wild Writing Women Weekend Workshop, the craft-oriented writing conference our group holds each year. This year it's Saturday, Jan 29, all day: Wild Writing Women Weekend Workshop.

    Italy 'not consulted' on Palestinians
The Church of the Nativity deal remains on hold ROME, Italy (CNN) The Italian government says it has not been consulted on a plan to exile 13 of the 123 Palestinians holed up in a Bethlehem church to their country. Tuesday's announcement by the Italian foreign ministry that such a move was not "thinkable" at the moment set back any immediate hopes of resolving the 35-day standoff between the Palestinians and the Israel military. Under the terms of the deal, 13 Palestinians inside the Church of the Nativity whom Israel accuses of being "senior terrorists" would be sent into exile. But the settlement is being delayed because no country has yet agreed to take them, an Israeli army spokesman said on Tuesday. ( Full story Italy has been reported in the media during the past few days to be a possible destination for the men but a statement released by the foreign ministry in Rome said it had not been contacted and no request had been made.

France, Italy to miss deficit targets
Jacques Chirac's newly elected government is expected to miss its deadline for balancing the French budget PARIS, France Two of Europe's biggest economies, France and Italy, will not meet deadlines set for balancing their budgets due to continuing weak economic conditions. France's interim government says it cannot keep its pledge to eliminate its deficit by 2004 and will attempt to negotiate a new deadline with its European Union partners. The newly elected government of Jacques Chirac is expected to renege on a 2004 deadline commitment for reducing the deficit of Europe's second biggest economy to zero or close to zero. France is now expected to balance its budget by 2007. "If you don't respect a commitment you don't start by saying it externally. You start by talking to those that you made the agreements with," Alain Lambert, a budget minister in the provisional government, said in a radio interview on Saturday.
