In the Piazza San Marco, Venice The study tour begins on the Amalfi Coast, with visits to such sites as Pompeii, Vesuvius, and Capri. In Rome, the students explore the history and culture of Europe's most incredible city — with visits to the Colosseum, the Forum, St. Peter's Basilica and the Vatican, the Pantheon, the Villa Borghese, the Catacombs, and the fascinating Roman piazzas, narrow lanes, and nooks and crannies. In comfortable Renaissance Florence, the unrivaled city of art, we visit the numerous major historical and cultural locations, which are among the world's greatest monuments, galleries, and museums; there is also wonderful Italian food and Vivoli's gelato. From Florence, we take day-trips to the beautiful and unique Cinque Terre, and to Siena and San Gimignano. In Venice, we enjoy St. Mark's and the Piazza San Marco, the Doge Palace, the Rialto, the famous canals, Nico's gelato, and the delightful adventure of exploring one of the world's most unusual cities.

Encinitas man preserves Little Italy's history
He gives tours of the area armed with research and old-timers' tales
By Amanda Daniels COMMUNITY NEWS WRITER
UNION-TRIBUNE August 4, 2005 Before moving to Encinitas more than 10 years ago, Davi lived for a number of years in Little Italy, where he collected life stories from older generations.
RONI GALGANO / Union-Tribune Anthony Davi (right) led a tour of Little Italy in San Diego. Before moving to Encinitas, he lived in Little Italy and collected stories about the area. Based on his research and interviews, he leads walking tours through Little Italy. Davi tells his sightseers they will become "mini-archaeologists for the day." "There's so much to see in 'the now,' but the history – you really have to go in search of," Davi said. "We dust it off and bring it alive." The tour spans 130 years, beginning with the first Italian fishermen who arrived in 1875.

Inside Lazio The River Tiber We thank our friends at Enjoy Rome for the following information. Which came first, Rome or the Tiber? Well, it has been suggested that Rome was named after the ancient name for the Tiber 'Rumon', which is itself a reference to Romulus. Others believe the river is named after the Latin kings Tebron or Tiberinus. Whatever the truth, the river is central to the myth of Romulus, Remus and the She-Wolf and it's navigability helped Rome become a commercial and political reality. The rest is, as they say, history. Today, the Tiber seems a little sorry for itself. This is partly due to the construction of the flood walls in the 19th century which fundamentally altered the city's interaction with the river.

At Stanford Since 1996 Ph.D., University of California at Berkeley
B.A., Wellesley College RESEARCH INTERESTS: I have taught the early history of science and medicine for many years on the premise that one of the most important ways to understand how science, medicine and technology have become so central to contemporary society comes from examining the process by which scientific knowledge emerged. I also take enormous pleasure in examining a kind of scientific knowledge that did not have an autonomous existence from other kinds of creative endeavors, but emerged in the context of humanistic approaches to the world (in defiance of C.P. Snow's claim that the modern world is one of "two cultures" that share very little in common). More generally, I am profoundly attracted to individuals in the past who aspired to know everything. It still seems like a worthy goal.
My other principal interest lies in understanding the world of the Renaissance, with a particular focus on Italy. I continue to be fascinated by a society that made politics, economics and culture so important to its self-definition, and that obviously succeeded in all these endeavors for some time, as the legacy of such figures as Machiavelli and Leonardo suggests. Renaissance Italy, in short, is a historical laboratory for understanding the possibilities and the problems of an innovative society. As such, it provides an interesting point of comparison to Gilded Age America, where magnates such as J.P. Morgan often described themselves as the "new Medici," and to other historical moments when politics, art and society combined fruitfully.

Studies in Italian Culture
Using the city of Parma as a case study, you will explore topics in Italian history, politics, economy, religion, art, literature, and culture through a series of lectures by area scholars and specialists as well as take study trips to other parts of Italy. The course also incorporates the family stay, community projects, and other more experiential components of the program to put a human face on the material presented in the lectures and readings. Intensive Italian Language Intensive Italian is offered at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels at the University of Parma. Becoming fluent in Italian, however, is not just a classroom exercise. It is part of your everyday life through interactions with your host family and local Italians. The competence you develop in Italian will be one of the treasures of your Pitzer in Italy experience. If you are already fluent in Italian, you may enroll in a university course in the spring or in a specially arranged course in the fall in lieu of language study. All students on the program will audit sessions of courses at the university toward the end of each semester as part of their intensive Italian studies.

The Sacralization of Politics in Fascist Italy
Emilio Gentile
Translated by Keith Botsford [This book] has precipitated both new research into, and vigorous theoretical debate about the myths, rituals, symbols, monuments and other spectacles of Fascist Italy...[Gentile's] account is undoubtedly the best brief introduction to the Italian Fascists' use of public spectacle, ranging from annual commemorations of the March on Rome and other key events in the Fascist calendar to the construction of monumental architecture.
Tobias Abse, Emilio Gentile is one of Italy's most prolific and influential students of Italian fascism, and it is good to have this thoroughly researched work, published in Italian in 1993, available in a worthy English translation...Gentile has made a major contribution not only to Italian history but to our ongoing effort to grasp the contours of the modern political experiment.
