THE HISTORY OF ITALY Italy, history of since earliest times the history of Italy has been influenced by cultural and political divisions resulting from the peninsula's disparate geography and by circumstances that made Italy the scene of many of Europe's most important struggles for power. EARLY ITALY Recent excavations throughout Italy and Sicily have revealed evidence of human activity during the Paleolithic and Mesolithic periods. By the beginning of the Neolithic period (c.5000 BC), the small communities of hunters of earlier times had been replaced by agricultural settlements, with some stock breeding and widespread use of stone implements and pottery. Painted vessels that seem to have been influenced by contemporary styles in Greece have been found at Castellaro Vecchio on the island of Lipari.
The Bronze Age
The Etruscans
The diverse cultural patterns of the early Iron Age were further complicated in the late 8th century BC by the arrival of Greek colonizers in the south and in Sicily and by the appearance of the ETRUSCANS in central Italy and the Po Valley. Historians generally agree that Etruscan culture was the result of outside (probably eastern) influence on indigenous peoples; the source, degree, and chronology of that outside influence remain uncertain. By the end of the 7th century BC, LATIUM and part of CAMPANIA had joined central Italy under Etruscan rule. As the Etruscans expanded their rule, many city-states were founded by the Italians.

        • around 1200 BC At the end of the Trojan War, the noble Trojan Aeneas flees the burning city with his father on his back, his son holding his hand and his wife "following behind a bit." His wife having been lost in the shuffle, he sets sail without her and arrives in Carthage, which will eventually become Rome's rival for power in the Mediterranean. Aeneas relates his tale of marital irresponsibility to Queen Dido who promptly falls in love with him. The Gods force Aeneas to move on and, although he is allegedly a great warrior, Aeneas lacks the courage to tell Dido straight out that he has to leave. Dido throws herself on a sword as Aeneas sails over the horizon. Aeneas eventually arrives in Italy and kills a bunch of local folks. All of this is related by Virgil writing for the Emperor Augustus in around 27 BC. I recommend studying the classics. From reading Homer and Virgil, I have learned the following: (1) women don't listen (cf. Dido above), (2) men like women with blond hair and large breasts (Dido, Helen, and Iphigenie were all described as blondes; third prize in an athetic contest in the Aeneid is a bunch of "deep chested slave women").
        • 753 BC Legendary founding of Rome by Romulus and Remus. Romulus dares anyone to jump over the wall he just built, on pain of death. His brother Remus accepts the dare and is promptly beheaded. That's why we have Romans and not Remans.

    Italian Unification (1861-1870)
Modern Italy became a nation-state during the Risorgimento on March 17, 1861 when most of the states of the peninsula and Kingdom the Two Sicilies were united under king Victor Emmanuel II of the Savoy dynasty, hitherto king of Sardinia , a realm that included Piedmont The architect of Italian unification was Count Camillo Benso di Cavour , the Chief Minister of Victor Emmanuel. Rome itself remained for a decade under the Papacy, and became part of the Kingdom of Italy only in 1870, the final date of Italian unification. Napoleon III's defeat brought an end to the French military protection for Pius IX and on September 20, Italian troops breached Rome's walls at Porta Pia and entered the city. The Italian occupation forced Pope Pius IX to his palace where he declared himself a prisoner in the Vatican until the Lateran Pacts of 1929.

A Concise History of Italy by Christopher Duggan

Review score: *** out of ***** I have never visited Europe. When I graduated from high school I did not have the money to make the trip to Europe that some American kids make at this time. When I graduated college I went right to work, so I did not travel then either. Now I have a twelve year old son, so although I have more money than I did when I was younger, travel is complicated by parental responsibilities. Despite all this, my wife and I dream of going to Europe, especially Italy. My wife, Linda, has been to both Florence and Venice when she was in her teens. She still has fond memories. We both love northern Italian food. I thought that one way to prepare for our eventual trip to Italy would be to read a bit about Italy's history. I have read several histories of the Roman empire and several books on the Italian city states during the Renaissance. But I have not read anything on Italy in modern times. I was fortunate to find Christopher Duggan's A Concise History of Italy , which provides a survey of Italian history from the end of the Roman Empire to the present time.
