You can visit Roman ruins, gawk at Renaissance art, stay in tiny medieval hill towns, go skiing in the Alps, explore the canals of Venice and gaze at beautiful churches. About the Italian History Index
Legal protection of databases The European Union, Directive 96/9/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 11 March 1996 on the legal protection of databases provides protection for the intellectual creation that is a database, plus protection for the "sweat of the brow" effort of making such databases (that is also for the non-intellectual effort).
The Italian History Index is made of different pages which are always under construction. You will find here Virtual Resources produced in Italy together with other world-wide Resources that deal with the history of Italy. The Index has and editorial board to select the "Best of the Italian History Index" and specific maintainers: "Medieval Italian History" is maintained by Prof.Pietro Corrao, University of Palermo and Prof.Roberto Delle Donne, University of Naples; "Anthropological Italian History" is maintained by Alessandra Guigoni, University of Cagliari, "Military History" is maintained by Elena Sodini, University of Verona, "E-teaching/e-learning" is maintained by Prof.Angelo Gaudio, University of Udine. In the future, new maintainers will contribute to the development of other categories in the Index.

Although Italy has only been unified since 1861, the rich and complex history of the peninsula has, perhaps more than that of any other country, influenced the course of European development, particularly in the fields of culture and political thought. The most important early settlers in the area were the Etruscans, who had established settlements in northern Italy by the sixth century BC. By the third century BC, the city state of Rome, having subdued most of the peninsula, was intent on extending its influence elsewhere. At its greatest extent, the Empire (so called after 30 BC) made the Mediterranean a Roman lake and for several centuries conferred on its inhabitants the benefits of the Pax Romana : culture (mainly Hellenic in origin), law, relative peace and comparative prosperity.

People of Italy Most Italians are native-born and identify closely with specific regions of Italy. Italian includes small clusters of German-Italians, French-Italians, and Slovene-Italians in the north and Albanian-Italians and Greek-Italians in the south. This is predominately a Roman Catholic population, with some Protestant, Jewish and Muslim immigrant communities. Arts, Culture and Music of Italy From antiquity to modern times, Italy has played a central role in world culture. Italians have contributed some of the world's most admired sculptures, architectural masterpieces, paintings, literature, and music (specially opera). Italians consider themselves the descendants of the ancient Romans and are very proud of their cultural heritage. Regional differences do persist mainly because of natural geographical boundaries and the disparate cultural heritage handed down from the Greeks, Etruscans, Arabs, Normans, and Lombards. Regional pluralism is evident in the local dialects, holidays, festivals, songs, and in the regional cuisine. Flag of Italy Three equal vertical bands of green (hoist side), white, and red characterize the Italian Flag. It is very similar to the flag of Ireland, which is longer and is green (hoist side), white, and orange. It is also similar to the flag of the Cote d'Ivoire, which has the colors reversed - orange (hoist side), white, and green. The French flag brought to Italy by Napoleon in 1797, is however said to have inspired Italy's flag.
