Ex-communist D'Alema tapped to form new Italian government
October 16, 1998
Web posted at: 8:48 p.m. EDT (0048 GMT) ROME (CNN) Leftist political leader Massimo D'Alema will spend the weekend trying to cobble together the support he needs to form a new government and become Italy's next prime minister. Looking for a way out of the political crisis gripping Italy, President Oscar Luigi Scalfaro formally asked D'Alema Friday to try to form a new government. He is to report to the president on his efforts on Monday. If D'Alema succeeds, he will become the first former communist ever to serve as Italian prime minister, marking a sea change in Italian politics. Until the Cold War ended, one of the guiding principles of Italy's political system was to keep the powerful Communist Party out of national power, though it did control some regional governments. Just three days ago, D'Alema, whose Democratic Party of the Left broke away from the Communist Party, downplayed his chances of ever being prime minister, calling ex-communists "children of a lesser god."

Italian judiciary attacks government
ROME, Italy The simmering row between the Italian government and the judiciary has heated up after a top prosecutor accused Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's centre-right administration of "intervention and sabotage." Interior Minister Claudio Scajola said he was suing over the remarks and analysts warned chances of reforming the legal system were lost. After a day of nationwide protests on Saturday, in which hundreds of magistrates donned black robes and accused the government of meddling in the judiciary, Scajola said he had to act. "The suit...is necessary because you cannot allow one institution to make false assertions about such a delicate topic," Scajola told Corriere della Sera in an interview published on Sunday. In a critical speech before thousands of supporters on Saturday, Milan's prosecutor-general Francesco Saverio Borrelli, a top prosecutor in the "Clean Hands" anti-corruption investigations of the 1990s, urged magistrates to resist "outside intervention and sabotage."

"The conditions are there to go forward," he said. Italian president taps ex-Communist to lead new government
D'Alema hopes to be in business this week
In this story:
ROME (CNN) President Oscar Luigi Scalfaro on Monday officially asked former Communist Massimo D'Alema to form Italy's 56th government since World War II, and D'Alema said he hoped to finish the task before the end of the week. Scalfaro's request came after D'Alema assembled a parliamentary majority, including centrists and moderate Marxists, following days of hard bargaining. D'Alema, an ex-Communist turned Social Democrat, said Italy needed a stable government to usher in the European economic and monetary union next January. An agreement for a government pact was sealed between D'Alema's center-left Olive Tree bloc, the centrist UDR party led by former Christian Democrat Prime Minister and President Francesco Cossiga and a newly formed moderate Communist party.

Former president and veteran politician Francesco Cossiga hailed the new Cabinet as a "government of national reconciliation" marking the end of the Cold War in Italy. D'Alema, 49, was sworn in as head of a government dominated by his center-left Olive Tree bloc, and which includes Cossiga's Democratic Union for the Republic, and the first Marxist ministers since 1947. Italy's Government on Brink of Collapse
By Gavin Jones ROME - Italy's government crisis showed no sign of easing Monday as Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi prepared to meet President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi to tell him whether he still had a majority or intended to resign. The future of Berlusconi's center-right government has been in doubt since the centrist Union of Christian Democrats (UDC) walked out Friday demanding major policy changes after the coalition suffered heavy losses in regional elections. Berlusconi's Forza Italia (Go Italy) party warned Sunday that a snap general election a year ahead of schedule was the only alternative if the UDC refused to come back into the government. "The time has come for taking responsibility ... If support is not given to Prime Minister Berlusconi's government, we will have to return to the voters," Forza Italia said in a statement. Some newspapers reported Berlusconi would meet UDC leader Marco Follini Monday before seeing Ciampi later in the day and interpreted his party's statement as partly a game of bluff and counter-bluff as both men refuse to back down. It seemed increasingly likely Berlusconi would be forced to resign, at least temporarily, to present a new cabinet to the president and parliament.
