The Geography of Italy Italy was the most important land in the western Mediterranean area. It is very important to appreciate the the geography of this area for an appropriate understanding of its history and to know for certain that it was destined to be the home of a great civilization, just as Jerusalem, was destined to be the home of a great king. The North On the north , Italy is, for the most part, protected by the tremendous mountains known as the Alps, which acted as a barrier wall against the barbarians of central Europe. The West In the western portion of Italy are large fertile plains which extend all the way to the Sea. The East Along the eastern coast and running from north to south are the Apennine mountains, which make the eastern part of Italy almost innaccessible. These mountains divided the many peoples of Italy, not into many city-states as in Greece, but into two classes: the poor, mountain tribes, and the wealthy plainsmen. The Coast Throughout Italy's 2000 miles of coastland, there are actually very few deep bays and good harbors. If any decent ones did exist they were generally on the south or western coasts. Facing West Geographically Italy and Rome faced west. This may be why the Romans turned an early gaze upon Spain, Gaul, and Britain. Italy's central position was extremely helpful in dominating the whole Mediterranean area once they had become united as a single state.

    • Altitude distance from the sea and aspect give local weather variations Winters are cold in the mountains The coasts are kept warm by the sea Winters from northern Europe spread south into Italy, bring snow to most mountains In summer, hot weather from Africa moves north to the whole country
The arrows on Map 1 show the prevailing winds. In the winter these bring winter rain particularly to the mountains. Storms like the Mistral can bring snow and gales. Heavy thunderstorms bring the only summer rain and this rapidly evaporates. The Scirocco is a hot dry wind from Africa. The graphs show h w the Mediterranean climate has local variations. July temperatures are similar, but rainfall is lower the south, and much lower in the summer than in the winter. Surrounded by warm seas and with mountains close by, the coast always has a breeze.
    • Map 2 shows that large areas of Italy average 24 o C all summer. The hot, dry Sirocco winds are short lived but can scorch crops and make life unpleasant.

Italians work to live - not live to work. Evidence of this is a widely used system called 'pennichella' in which people return home from work in the afternoon to eat and relax, and go back to work again afterwards. ‘Pennichella' usually occurs between 1pm and 4pm. It is a magnificent invention when you live there as you can retreat to your home and relax for a while. But as a tourist, in some cities all the shops close and when you want to shop - it’s impossible! Times may vary from region to region - but only by an hour or so. Until about the 1860's Italy consisted of multiple independent States. At that time the Pope had complete civil powers for a large area, including Rome. When Victor Emanuel II became King of Italy in 1861 he united the country into a single government. All independent States, including the Papal State were dissolved. For nearly 60 years the Pope and his staff remained entirely within the Papal Palace and gardens. They never traveled outside that limited area and considered themselves to be 'Prisoners' of the Kingdom. Each town in Italy has its own patron saints, and on their special feast day, celebrations are grand and symbolic. The Festa di San Giuseppe (Feast of St. Joseph - March 19th - Sicily), the Feast of St. Anthony of Padua (June 13th), and Festa di Santa Lucia (December) are only a few that are celebrated. There are also grand regattas (boat races) and events such as the annual carnival (before Lent), especially the one held in Nuoro where participants dress in 18th century costumes. Italy also celebrates food! For example, in the town of Piglio, which is southeast of Lazio, there is an annual grape festival where grapes are "sculpted" to resemble people and objects

    Italy Field Trip
Approximately half of our BA students visit Southern Italy (Naples and Rome) as part of their second year Field Study module.
The vibrant and bustling city of Naples offers a window onto diverse social structures and labour markets. In Roma, one of the most fascinating cities in the world, students have the opportunity to experience the architecture and ruins of three millennia of history overlain by a modern, thriving European capital city.
The field trip focuses upon the geography of a particular region, the Italian South (the Mezzogiorno), and seeks to understand its cultures, landscapes, societies and economies. Students have the opportunity to consider issues of regional underdevelopment, the impact of policy, planning and state power, and the transformation of cultural landscapes in both rural and urban areas.
The 2005 excursion was led by David Atkinson, Graham Haughton and Lewis Holloway.
