As an infant Michelangelo was cared for by a wet nurse whose family were stonecutters. He grew up loving above all, to carve marble statues. He called it "stone fever" and said, "Nothing was right with me unless I had a chisel in my hand." The plain on both sides of the Arno which is today the site of the city of Florence was said by Livy to have been so marshy in antique times as to have impeded Hannibal during his march on Rome. According to Florentine legend it took Hercules himself (whose effigy appears in one of the ancient seals of the city) to drain the swamp and make possible the founding of a settlement. The plain has had to be kept drained ever since, and even so, the Arno has frequently flooded over into it. Italy Book and Video Selections

Italian Wines: Romance, History and Taste
What's the first thing you think of when someone mentions Italy? Perhaps an intimate and romantic ride in a gondola through the waters of Venice with a special someone. Maybe it’s the quiet majesty of the Italian Alps rearing to meet the clouds. It could be the grandeur of Rome—still as striking and awe-inspiring today as it was in the time of the Caesars. Or maybe the small quaint villages on Sicily or Sardinia call to you. As diverse as the images of Italy are, so too, are her wines: rich, full-bodied reds, crisp whites, both fruity and dry, sparkling champagnes and spumantes, unique goldens and more. Whether you seek a wine to accompany a fine Italian meal, a beverage to lighten the spirit and warm the heart, or just a quiet glass of wine at the end of the day, Italy has a wine for you.

Little is known of Italian history before the 5th cent. B.C. , except for the regions (S Italy and Sicily) where the Greeks had established colonies (see Magna Graecia ). The earliest known inhabitants seem to have been of Ligurian stock. The Etruscans, coming probably from Asia Minor, established themselves in central Italy before 800 B.C. They reduced the indigenous population to servile status and established a prosperous empire with a complex cu. B.C.

Geography. COAST AND ISLANDS Italy consists of a peninsula jutting southeast into the Mediterranean for some 500 miles from the Alps and so closely resembles a leg with a hoot on it that it is common to talk of the toe and heel of Italy. On the west side south of Elba lies the Tyrrhenian Sea and on the eastern coast the Adriatic. Between the French border and the Tuscan archipelago lies the Ligurian Sea and along the south between Sicily and the heel and toe of Italy, the Ionian Sea. On the western side the Republic of Italy encompasses Sardinia and Sicily, two of the largest islands in the Mediterranean, as well as numerous small archipelagos lying close to the coast.
