Ministry ... Italy in the World > Italy and Culture, Italy is Culture The promotion abroad of scientific and humanistic practice, as well as of the Italian language, is to be considered fundamental to Italy's political and economic rapport with foreign countries and to maintaining ties with large Italian communities abroad.
In addition to enhancing Italy's contribution to European and world culture, it is necessary to ensure that the creative excellence of the past, gradually built up over the centuries, is recognised as the life-blood of today's excellence in those sectors that modern production has necessarily ranked as leaders of ever-expanding markets.
A particularly complex effort, that of constantly maintaining and enhancing the dialogue with other cultures - those both nearer and farther from our own - on such a wide and complex range of matters: a cultural dialogue that at times is the almost exclusive form of contact in situations where dialogue in other sectors is scarce. Such tasks fall in Italy to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which carries them out by means of close and active collaboration with the competent Ministries, first among which the Ministry of Cultural Assets and Activities and that of Universities, Education and Research.

The geste, or tales, of Charlemagne first appeared in a Franco-Venetian vernacular and were later Italianized in Tuscany (Toscana). Besides attaining lasting popularity in Italy, the tales furnished themes of chivalry for subsequent Italian poets.
The earliest poetry written in Italian was that of the Sicilian school connected with the German Hohenstaufen court of the Italian-speaking Holy Roman emperor Frederick II and his son Manfred.

For a taste of Italian culture and architecture, visit Rome. To sample much of Italy's finest cuisine and wines, visit the Tuscany region. And to become acquainted with modern Italian culture, fashion, and industry, travel to Milan. Cosmopolitan, savvy, and smart, Milan, while neither Italy's capital nor its largest city, is indisputably the country's financial and cultural center. Milan is home to Italy's main stock exchange, as well as a high-fashion industry that leads the world (although some Parisians and New Yorkers may care to argue this point with you). For visitors, there is the world-renowned shopping, an array of diverse nightclubs, a varied sampling of cuisine from around the world as well as Milan's own local flavors, the beautiful Romanesque and Gothic churches, and some of the country's finest galleries and museums. In Milan, you will never be short of something wonderful to do. In Style To truly immerse yourself in the flavor of Milan's sophisticated daily life, the first thing you'll want to do is find a cozy café with outdoor seating, order a cappuccino, and sit. Milan's locals seem to understand the importance of their position on the world stage as a center for high fashion, and they do their best to uphold this honor by always looking fabulous. It seems to be an inherent trait with these Italians, an inherited birthright that no matter the time of day or the activity, they always exhibit casual elegance.

Italy Introduction Officially called the Republic of Italy, Italy is located in southern Europe, and has a population of roughly 58.2 million. Italy has much to offer its citizens and visitors. Surrounded by the four seas of the Mediterranean, Italy is famous for its coastline activities. Italy also has a mountain range with elevations over 13,500 feet for the skiing and hiking enthusiast. Italy has no official religion, though the majority of Italy's citizens are Roman Catholic. Fun Fact Italy is currently the home of three active volcanoes; Stromboli, Vesuvius, and Etna. The Vatican City, the home of the Pope and the Roman Catholic Church, is located within the city of Rome and is considered a separate state completely. The Vatican has its own currency, flag, and stamps, although Italian money can be used.

Standard Italian is based on Tuscan dialects and is somewhat intermediate between the languages of Southern Italy and the Gallo-Romance languages of the North. The long-established Tuscan standard has, over the last few decades, been slightly influenced by the variety of Italian spoken in Milan , the economic center of Italy. Like many languages written using the Latin alphabet , Italian has double consonants; however, contrary to, for example, French and Spanish, double consonants are pronounced as long ( geminated ) in Italian.
