March 15th -18th
See special letter to the British Italian Society.
A forum for lovers of Italy and Italian Culture "Open my heart and you will see
Graved inside of it, 'Italy'."
Robert Browning Since it was founded over sixty years ago, the British-Italian Society (BIS) has worked to increase knowledge and understanding in the United Kingdom of Italian culture in its widest sense, in terms of history, institutions, way of life, language and contribution to civilisation. It has done so through lectures, publications, exhibitions, readings and concerts and also raised money for people in need here or in Italy. Circumstances have, of course, changed drastically since the founding "Friends of Free Italy" first met in 1941. At that time, the two countries were at war. Today, thousands of British people know Italy at first hand from visits there, just as thousands of Italians know Britain. Millions more know Italian culture from films, books, magazines, TV and a myriad other sources of information and entertainment. There are extensive economic, financial and business links, cultural, educational and a host of other exchanges. As a fellow member of the European Union, Italy is scarcely 'foreign' any longer in the classic sense of the word.

    Dr. Melanie L. Marshall
Welcome to my web pages! I am a recently-doctored musicologist working at the University of Southampton. On this website you can find out more about my research into the villotta , a genre of dialect song with origins in northern Italy. My thesis includes transcriptions and translations of books of villotte by Alvise Castellino (1541), Mathias Hermann Werrecore (1548), Antonino Barges (1550), and Filippo Azzaiolo (1557, 1559). I plan to extend my work on gender, sexuality and eroticism in music to encompass other genres of secular vocal music in Italy, including the madrigal and the French chanson, and settings from the Song of Songs. If you are an Analysis Through Composition student, please visit my teaching pages for extra handouts and assignment tips. I welcome any feedback concerning the site. Thanks for visiting! Melanie
