    Goals
The course stresses the interplay of culture, society and economic life. In particular, it examines how our understanding of our cultural heritage influences our concept of ourselves. The rich heritage of Italy illustrates this process.
    Ascea, Velia, Paestum
After the flight to Rome or Naples, we head for the tiny seaside town of Ascea, two hours south of Naples. No one goes on this trip to see Ascea, but nearly everyone agrees in the end that the best days are there. Next to it lies Velia, once the thriving Greek city Elea. We explore the ruins to picture for ourselves the ancient city. Nearby Paestum has three of the most complete surviving Greek temples. A day on a farm and meetings with people active in business development of the area bring us in touch with the current economic life. We will also work on basic Italian.

My goal is to create an experience that you can't get traveling with just a guide book or on a package tour. I create a personalized tour for your group, regardless of size. Having someone who speaks the language is always a great help when traveling in a foreign country, but not reason enough to give up your dream itinerary or spend a lot of extra money. I can offer experiences that are difficult to arrange on your ownvisits to wineries large and small, cooking classes, day trips to sights off the beaten track, designer outlet shopping, language lessons, spa days. Most importantly, you'll experience the Italian culture, not tourist traps.

    Italy Culture
Italy (04/05) Italy's agriculture is typical of the division between the agricultures of the northern and southern countries of the European Union. The northern part of Italy produces primarily grains, sugarbeets, soybeans, meat, and dairy products, while the south specializes in producing fruits, vegetables, olive oil, wine, and durum wheat. Even though much of its mountainous terrain is unsuitable for farming, Italy has a large work force (1.4 million) employed in farming. Most farms are small, with the average farm only seven hectares. ... Florence Report SGI-Italy: A Youthful Movement
    By Tamiko Kaneda SGI-Italy
The first summer course in Bardonecchia (August 1979)
SGI-Italy is growing by engaging itself more and more actively in Italian society. It is developing a culture-and-peace movement with impact not only in Italy but also throughout Europe.
In 1999, the members of SGI-Italy decided to cooperate with the Comunita di Sant' Egidio, a group of Christian communities, to collect signatures opposing the use of the death penalty around the world. In Florence and in central Italy, SGI-Italy had taken advantage of large exhibitions and conferences to collect signatures. This allowed the organization to promote human rights on a global scale. Even more effective than this was heart-to-heart dialogue with families, friends and colleagues. From Florence alone, SGI-Italy members managed to collect more than 180,000 signatures, out of the total of 435,000 signatures collected all over Italy. The Comunita di Sant' Egidio decided to carry on collecting signatures for the entire year, and SGI-Italy will continue this activity for the year 2000 as well.
Youth meeting in Florence (March 2000) The achievement of collecting 180,000 signatures marked a milestone for SGI-Italy as it showed the extent to which the organization has developed in a short period of time. The SGI's movement in Florence started in the spring of 1976 when two 18-year-old high school studentsPiero Borri and Marco Magrinifirst heard about Buddhism from two American musiciansKarl Potter and Marvin Smithwith whom they were playing in a concert. Soon, Michele Berton and Alessandro Berti, who had moved from Milan to Florence, began to chant as well.

    Italy - Culture
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman The 20th century has seen the transformation of Italy from a highly traditional, agricultural society to a progressive, industrialized state. There are many differences in people's daily lives in different places of ItalyRome, Milan, Venice, Sicily, and others. All of them combined make a unique picture of the Italian lifestyle.
The majority of the population of Italy lives in cities and villages; only a fraction live in hamlets or in isolated houses. From antiquity, Mediterranean peoples have had highly developed urban centers. Today, there are four cities in Italy with a population of more then 1,000,000 (Rome, Milan, Turin, and Naples); but there are many other large cities in Italy, and almost half of them are on or near the sea.
A number of cities have merged into enormous metropolitan complexes, sometimes characterized as mega-cities, such as those surrounding Milan. Severe congestion and pollution are the result of a growing population and high level of automobile ownership in Italy.
