Italy's Culture
Not Only the Food Regales You

Italians are warm, welcoming people who enjoy sharing the pleasures of life with others: a comforting meal, an inspiring sunset, and yes...a clever joke.
Can you experience Italy without sharing a laugh, breaking bread or taking in the last rays of the day's light with an Italian friend? Yes, but how much better to learn about Italian culture, traditions and history while building bridges of mutual understanding! "Una giornata senza riso è una giornata sprecata." is a common proverb: "A day without laughter is a wasted day." Whether in a classroom or strolling streetside, the Italian people express an authenticity and passion unmatched the world over. As a volunteer, you can extend understanding between cultures while enjoying all that the unique culture and people of southern Italy has to offer.

Although Italy has only been unified since 1861, the rich and complex history of the peninsula has, perhaps more than that of any other country, influenced the course of European development, particularly in the fields of culture and political thought. The most important early settlers in the area were the Etruscans, who had established settlements in northern Italy by the sixth century BC. By the third century BC, the city state of Rome, having subdued most of the peninsula, was intent on extending its influence elsewhere. At its greatest extent, the Empire (so called after 30 BC) made the Mediterranean a Roman lake and for several centuries conferred on its inhabitants the benefits of the Pax Romana : culture (mainly Hellenic in origin), law, relative peace and comparative prosperity.

Country Info Italy Introduction Italy General Data Italy Maps Italy Culture ... Italy Time and Date Italy Culture Back to Top Distinct regional and cultural differences in Italy make it impossible to draw a unified picture of daily life. A Milanese businessman's day differs considerably in both style and pace from that of his Neapolitan counterpart. Nevertheless, some general observations may be made. An considerable survey of people over the age of 14, undertaken in 1988 by the national statistical agency, ISTAT, showed that Italians spent almost half of their time either eating, sleeping, or cleaning and grooming. In general, men enjoyed more free time than women, who spent more time shopping, working, and attending to the needs of their families. While women spent an average of four hours per day doing domestic work, men spent only 50 minutes. Girls over the age of 14 studied more than three times longer than boys of the same age. According to the ISTAT survey, Italians on the average devoted less than half an hour per day to intellectual activity and a mere eight minutes to political, religious, or volunteer activity, while more than 85 % of the population spent nearly two and a half hours per day watching television. Similarly, nearly two hours per day were devoted by more than 60 % of the population to meeting friends and relatives. These figures reflect the dramatic secularization of Italian society. The overall figures, belie valuable behavioral variations. For the more urban areas the emphasis has shifted to entertainment, particularly in the home. Television ownership is widespread throughout the nation, and increasing numbers of Italians own video recorders. On the other hand, fewer Italians go to the cinema than before, and participation in sport and physical activities is low, indicating a strong element of passivity in leisure time activities

CULTURE Unparalleled in its diversity, Italy offers delights ranging from fine wines and exceptional cuisine to high art and great historical sites. The peaceful Puglia region in southern Italy is renown for its stunning whitewashed coastal homesteads, serene hills cloaked in olive groves and vineyards, and medieval villages connected by narrow, winding streets. During free time and on the weekends, allow the friendliness of the region to embrace you in the cozy sidewalk cafes and verdant plazas. Volunteers may be invited into the homes of students or teachers to reflect over coffee or dessert. If you were to share a meal with a friend - you'll be served the Puglia region's trademark fare - local specialties of lamb, seafood, and orrechiette pasta - at your hotel and in local restaurants. While the food industry has changed the food sector in many parts of the world, Italian cooking still retains much of the traditions of fresh ingredients and preparations, but is still able to keep up with the pace of current society. Volunteers have been much impressed by the quality of Puglian cuisine. In Italy, conversation is an art form. Walk along the open cafes in nearly any town in Italy and you'll observe groups engaged in intense, animated discussions on a wide variety of topics. But, Italians don't casually discuss personal matters of religion or politics. Conversational topics that are appreciated, however, are (besides family) Italian culture, art, films, food, wine and, of course, sports, especially football (soccer)! Art is a big part of Italian culture, and not only visible in its museums. Colorful streets are lined with buildings of every shape, size, and color - often charactorized by huge arches and columns. Decorative windows, steps, and fountains are testimate to a wide variety of styles and tastes.
