  • Research Fellow
Research Interests:
  • Literacy and writing in early societies Ethnicity and cultural identity in the ancient Mediterranean Urbanisation in pre-Roman and Roman Italy Colonisation in the western Mediterranean
Collaborations
  • The Italian urbanism project , with T.J. Cornell (Institute of Classical Studies): This project, based at UCL from 1989-94, investigated the development of urban centres in Italy from their first emergence to the end of the Roman Empire, and examined aspects such as the earliest development of cities in Italy, the impact of the Roman conquest and subsequent processes of Romanization, and the development of urban society in the Late Republic and Early Empire. Monographs of aspects of this project have been published by both participants, as have a series of three co-edited volumes of conference papers. The main output, a major collection of data on urban development is at an advanced stage of preparation and a further book, on the development of urban society in archaic Italy, is in progress.
    Developmental literacy in early Italy

    Etruscan Literacy in socio-cultural context
, with R. Whitehouse (UCL) and John Wilkins (Accordia): Following on from the research on Developmental Literacy in Early Italy, this project (also funded by the AHRC) examines the social context of the earliest literacy in Italy. Central Italy in general, and Etruria in particular, are key regions for the study of literacy in Italy. They were the first regions to adopt writing from Greeks and Phoenicians, and to adapt it to local purposes. The early date of the introduction of alphabetic writing poses interesting questions about possible connections between literacy and the social, economic and political changes which resulted in the development of state / urban societies in the region. This project aims to look at a key area of primary development, in which writing is adopted from external sources and at an early stage of development.
