The Library of the American Academy in Rome contains over 130,000 volumes in the fields of Classical studies and the history of art and architecture. Especially strong are the collections in ancient Mediterranean archaeology and art, Greek and Latin literature, ancient topography (including the history of the city of Rome), ancient religions, and related fields such as epigraphy, numismatics and papyrology. There is a good working collection in the history of art and architecture, especially Italian. The rare book collection comprises chiefly 16th-18th century imprints in classical studies, archaeology, art and architecture, including sizeable collections of Roman guidebooks and early art treatises. The Library also houses small but noteworthy collections in contemporary art and architecture, landscape architecture, Italian history and literature, American literature, historical travel books and music.
The Library acquires ca. 2,000 volumes per year and subscribes to approximately 600 current periodicals. Preference is given to scholarly publications in the core subjects listed above. A special priority is given to publications from the United States, in the conviction that the Academy has a responsibility to represent the best of American scholarship to Rome's multinational community. Italian local and regional publications in the Library's main fields often difficult to obtain in the United States are another acquisitions priority. The Academy Library welcomes gifts, especially the publications of its Fellows and readers. There is an active Friends of the Library program on both sides of the Atlantic.

Librariana aims to be a collection of references to libraries and librarians in the world of fiction and in the arts. Archives and documentation centres have also been included if particularly significant or when confused, as often happens, with libraries. The section is divided into several branches, each of them presenting links to similar sites and to the pages created by the editorial team on various topics. In order to compile these pages the available bibliography has been used, as well as information collected among members of the editorial team and colleagues.
aw-clm@aib.it

Librariana, in collaboration with the section "AIB-WEB. Contributi", is also pleased to receive articles written by colleagues on the topics dealt with. Papers can be sent to the editorial team of "Contributi"

    English Literature
It is not unfitting to compare English Literature to a great tree whose far spreading and ever fruitful branches have their roots deep down in the soil of the past. Over such a tree, since the small beginnings of its growth, many vicissitudes of climate have passed; periods of storm, of calm, of sunshine, and of rain; of bitter winds and of genial life-bearing breezes; each change leaving its trace behind in the growth and development of the living plant. It is obvious, then, that to present the complete history of such an organism in a few pages is impossible; all that can be attempted in this article is to describe the main lines of its life. Christianity , preached by St. Augustine in 597, bringing in its train education, science, and the arts, was the main factor in this refining change. Such British tribes as had escaped the English destroyer remained for a time almost entirely apart, though they and their literature were afterwards to have no small influence upon the literary development of England. Putting aside minor verse we come first upon the "Beowulf", a narrative poem which, together with a few other fragments, is all we have of the old English epic. It seems clear that the matter of it is much older than its present form. It is a storehouse of the thinking and feeling of the forefathers of the English people when they were still heathen and before they came to Britain, even though the poem may not have been actually put together in its present form until the ninth or tenth century. It gives a picture of very great interest of certain aspects of the actual life of the people. The English temper of mind at its best, enduring and heroic, pervades it throughout.

The study of languages has been the fundamental basis of liberal education since the Renaissance and is crucial to learning in the 21st century, as technologies create global channels of communication. This department, therefore, is committed to promoting the study of at least one second language in order to enable students to participate in the world of international communities and, moreover, to appreciate and contribute to a broad spectrum of diverse cultures. The Department of French, Italian, and Comparative Literature offers a complete sequence of courses in two languages and in the literatures and cultures of the world. French

To be accepted and to continue as majors, they must maintain at least a 2.50 GPA in French courses. Italian
