About the Instructor: Professor Heyer-Caput is a native of Italy. She received her Laurea in Philosophy from the University of Turin, Italy and her M.A. and Ph.D. in Romance Languages and Literatures from Harvard University. Before becoming a faculty member of the French and Italian Department at UCDavis in 2000, she taught at the University of Berne, Switzerland and at various colleges and universities in the North East.
Her research and teaching areas cover the Italian literature of the 20th and 19th century, with particular attention to philosophical approaches to literature, Italian women writers, literature and film, and relationships between Italian and German literature.
In addition to her two books on Franz Kafka (1982) and Luigi Malerba (1995), Professor Heyer-Caput has published extensively on Boccaccio, Leopardi, Svevo, Saba, Croce, DeSanctis, Morazzoni Deledda, etc.
At present she is working on a long-term project about the 1926 Nobel Prize laureate Grazia Deledda.

Course Description: This seminar focuses on the great Medieval Italian poet, Dante Alighieri (1265-1321). Enrollment is limited to students who have advanced proficiency in Italian (Italian studies students, Italian literature students, Italian language studies students, etc.). We will read Dante's youthful autobiographical novel, the Vita Nuova and a selection of his lyric poetry; class focuses on the Inferno, the first book of the Divine Comedy (we will read the original Italian text in a bilingual edition). We will focus on Dante as a love poet, a political poet, a poet writing in exile; we will examine thematic, generic, symbolic, and gender aspects of his work, within its literary and cultural context.

Instructor: Irene Zanini-Cordi Course Description: Tales and fables of love, lust, and amorous conflict have left an impressive trace in Italian literature. Following this theme, we will analyze the development and the reciprocal influence through the centuries of three literary genres that have played an important role in the Italian literary tradition: the novella, the fairy tale, and the short story. We will approach these brief texts both from a formal and a thematic perspective; we will examine the connections between literature, politics, anthropology, and history. To what extent can we think of the tale as "historical testimony"? Is the fairytale simply a flight of fantasy? What does the short story have to say about contemporary Italian culture and relationships? To answer these and other questions, the course will survey an array of texts ranging from the thirteenth century to the present.         Course Requirement
        Candidates must satisfy the University's General Entrance Requirements and must possess an 'A' level pass in English Literature.
        Scheme of Study
        Four years full-time study leading to the degree of BA (Honours) in English and Italian Literature or of BA (Pass) in English and Italian Literature (UCAS course no. QR33). Students transferring to a Pass degree either (exceptionally) at the end of the first year or during the second or third year will be expected to drop one module in each of the following years. IT301 Modern Italian Language II, and IT401 Modern Italian Language III are compulsory. Candidates for Pass degrees will be permitted to take the normal Honours load in order to make it possible for them to apply for reinstatement to Honours. Modules dropped will not normally be taken from those listed below as core modules.
