The Thirteenth Century The first Italian vernacular literature began to take shape in the 13th cent. with the imitation of Proven§al lyric poetry at the court of Frederick II in Sicily. The Sicilians are credited with inventing the sonnet , which became the most widely used form of Italian poetry and later flourished throughout Europe. The Sicilian style was dominant in the north until c.1260, when Guido Guinizelli, a Bolognese poet and jurist, moved from the Proven§al conception of courtly love to a more mystical and philosophical spirituality. The poets who took Guinizelli as their model originated the “sweet new style” ( dolce stil novo )—so named by Dante Alighieri in canto 24 of his Purgatorio.

Using CD-ROMs and the Berkeley Library Information Network (BLIN)
CD-ROMs can be found throughout the entire UC Berkeley Library system. The principal locations are on the Library Information System public PCs, on computers available only at specific library locations, or in the Media Resources Center. CD-ROMs that are part of the Berkeley Library Information Network are only accessible via a desktop icon on the Library public PCs. In addition, the Library subscribes to selected electronic indexing services which are made available through non-networked, or stand alone, workstations. There are also many print indexes that are available in all of the libraries, some of which are more important in a particular field than any electronic index to which we provide access. Using the California Digital Library
Anyone may visit the CDL web site and many of its resources are available to the public at large. A search of the Directory of Collections and Services will reveal many databases, discovery tools such as online catalogs, and specific digital content such as electronic journals, reference sources, and finding aids to archival collections that are, in turn, located throughout the state. However, as described below, some of these resources are purchased or licensed for the use of the University of California only. Visitors not affiliated with UC will not be able to "click through" to these licensed resources, especially to journal article databases, and electronic journals.

page: Italy figures large in the Western homoerotic imagination: The novels of Henry James, E. M. Forster, Thomas Mann, and more recently Edmund White testify to the persuasive romance of Italy as a favored location for the gay writer. External perceptions of Italy, however, continue to oscillate between two contrasting mythical poles. It is either seen as the prehistoric land of sexually available nymphs and shepherds or is condemned to remain the cenotaph of high culture in which homosexual aesthetes can vent their artistic sensibility. Sponsor Message.
Both versions have probably played a part in the varied constructions of gay identity but say little about the historical realities and cultural representations of homosexuality in Italy itself. The Problems in Discovering a Homosexual Tradition The discussion of homosexuality in Italy is complicated also because it is difficult to view the peninsula as a single historical or geographical unit before Unification in 1870, and even today Italy is marked by enormous social and cultural diversity.
