81. Strat's Place - Daniel Rogov - Israel - History Of Wine In Israel
Rogov s Ramblings israel - history of Wine in israel.

Daniel Rogov's
A Long History of Wine
After they had left Egypt and approached Canaan, Moses sent twelve spies across the river to explore the Promised Land. When they returned to their encampment to advise Moses, only Joshua and Caleb were in favor of entering the new land. The other spies, however, had not been particularly impressed by what they found and because they advised against entering the new land, the Israelites began their 40 year trek through Sinai. Fortunately, however, two of the spies had returned with a cluster of grapes and, according to folklore, those grapes yielded enough wine to last the people for their forty years in the wilderness. Nobody today is sure just how that wine tasted. There is a good chance, however, that it was terrible. Wine has been made in Israel since pre-Biblical times but, if the truth be known, until recently, there was no reason to be proud of those wines. The wines shipped to ancient Egypt were so bad that they had to be seasoned with honey, pepper and juniper berries to make them palatable, and those sent to Rome and England during the height of ancient Roman civilization were so thick and sweet that no modern connoisseur could possibly approve of them. So bad were most of these wines that it was probably a good thing that the Moslem conquest in AD 636 imposed a 1,200 year halt to the local wine industry. Even in 1870, when wine production started again, thanks to the aid of Baron Edmond de Rothschild, not all went smoothly, and most of the wine that was produced was red, sweet, unsophisticated and unappealing. In 1875, for example, British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli was given a bottle of kosher red wine from Palestine. After taking a few sips, Disraeli observed that it tasted "not so much like wine but more like what I expect to receive from my doctor as a remedy for a bad winter cough". Well into the 1960s, Israel justifiably suffered from a reputation of producing wines too sweet and too coarse to appeal to knowledgeable drinkers.

40 Significant Facts About Israel's History - Part 2
by Clarence H. Wagner, Jr.

Yemin Moshe Today In my last Israel Teaching Letter, we began to explore the history of Israel and covered the period from Abraham to the 19th century. If you want to find the first part of this article it is listed on the Teaching Letter page. Fact #18 The 19th century saw signs of Western progress with European powers jockeying for position, often through missionary activities. British, American and French scholars launched studies of biblical geography and archaeology, consulates were opened in Jerusalem, steamships began to bring travelers and trade from Europe, postal and telegraphic connections were installed, and the first road was built connecting Jerusalem and Jaffa. The Land's rebirth, as the crossroads of three continents, was accelerated by the opening of the Suez Canal. (1) Of all the groups living in Jerusalem, since 1818 the Jewish population has been the religious majority. The first official census in 1844 confirms Jewish religious majority: 7,120 Jews, 5,760 Muslims, and 3,390 Christians. Up until 1860, everyone in Jerusalem lived inside the walls of the ancient city and the gates were secured at sunset each day. At this time, the population had grown to the point that there was no more room. The first Jewish suburb, Mishkenot Sha'ananim, was built near the Jaffa Gate outside the Old City walls in 1860 by Sir Moses Montefiore. Seven similar neighborhoods were also built outside the walls, e.g., Nahlat Shiva (1869), Mea Shearim (1873-75), and Yemin Moshe (1892), etc. These became the nucleus of the New City of Jerusalem. Some are the quaintest and most interesting neighborhoods of Jerusalem today.

40 Significant Facts About Israel's History - Part 3
by Clarence H. Wagner,Jr.

In the Arab invasion of 1948 the Arab nations surrounding Israel sought to end all Jewish immigration and destroy the newly declared Jewish state of Israel. In my last Israel Teaching Letter, we explored the history of Israel and covered the period from the 19th century to the founding of the State of Israel in 1948. If you want to find the previous two issues which cover all of Israel's history from the time of Abraham, it is listed on the Teaching Letter page. Fact #30 The Arabs rejected the UN partition plan of 1947 and didn't accept their portion of land. Instead, five Arab armies (Egypt, Syria, Transjordan, Lebanon and Iraq) immediately invaded Israel expecting to sweep the Israelis into the sea. Fortunately, his words were not prophetic and Israel not only retained that which was given to her by the UN, but a bit more. Those areas designated for the Arab state in Palestine were occupied by other Arab countries: the West Bank (of the Jordan River) by Jordan, and the Gaza Strip by Egypt. After the establishment of the State of Israel, Jewish refugees of WWII and others from Moslem countries of the Middle East began to pour in. From 1948-1972, over 1,400,000 immigrants came into Israel. All had to be settled, trained, given Hebrew language classes, and many needed health care. All of this cost fell on the shoulders of the Israelis and the Jewish community worldwide.

Israel News Agency
Jerusalem-March 27.....Not a day passes that we don't hear someone yell: "stop the Israeli occupation."
It's gotten to a point where even I have started to look at historical maps of Israel to make sure that I am not dreaming. The Palestinian public relations people must be complimented. These guys are really good. After all, Israel stole their land - right? Their native homeland, like the American Indian. But we don't stop there. Israel, in order to protect its civilians from Palestinian terror suicide bombers and systematic genocide, must construct a security fence, or is it an "apartheid wall?" When you confront Palestinians with history - they either run or call you a liar.
For example, the West Bank was Jordan and Gaza was Egypt prior to 1967. So where did Palestine come from? The word Palestine did not come from the word "Plesheth", a name that appears frequently in the Bible and has come into English as "Philistine". Plesheth, (root palash) was a general term meaning rolling or migratory. This referred to the Philistine's invasion and conquest of the coast from the sea. The Philistines were not Arabs nor even Semites, they were most closely related to the Greeks originating from Asia Minor and Greek localities. They did not speak Arabic. They had no connection, ethnic, linguistic or historical with Arabia or Arabs.

Banquet Hall Collapse 'Worst Disaster In Israel's History' CNSNews.com
Friday, May 25, 2001
Jerusalem CNSNews.com In what is being described as Israel's worst ever civil disaster, at least 22 people are dead, more than 300 wounded and as many as 50 people still missing on Friday after a banquet hall collapsed in Jerusalem during a wedding party. Hundreds of soldiers, police and other workers were searching through the rubble of the five-story building for survivors and bodies of the some 655 guests that had come to celebrate the wedding of Assaf Dror and Karen Yosef. The rescuers' only clue as to who might still be missing was the invited guest list and reports from relatives who could not find their loved ones among the injured. Major-General Gabi Ofir, head of the Home Front Command overseeing the operation, said survivors could be found even up to a week. He called the disaster "the greatest tragedy of its kind in Israel's history." The Israeli army's crack search and rescue team was leading the operation, using specially trained dogs to seek for signs of life but hopes of finding any survivors seemed slim.

Stealing Israel's history
In the Jerusalem Post, Max Singer makes a point that has long seemed to me to be absolutely central to the campaign to delegitimise Israel. It is painfully apparent to anyone who attempts to set out the facts about the Arab war against Israel that whatever evidence is brought forward is dismissed – because of the widespread belief that the Jews stole the land of Israel from the Palestinians. So no matter how many Israelis are murdered, or how nefarious is the Palestinian Authority in concealing its real intention to destroy Israel, people brush it all aside because they think Israel stole the land from the Palestinians.
This is, of course, historically illiterate. There was never an Arab country called Palestine. For about 400 years the Jews had sovereignty in what is now Israel and the West Bank, despite losing parts of it to foreign conquest, until they were finally driven out in 135 CE. It was the Romans who renamed Judea Palaestina to expunge all traces of the Jews. The land of Israel was stolen from the Jews, first by the Romans and then by the Arabs. Jews did not conquer Arabs; Arabs conquered Jews. Jews did not ethnically cleanse Arabs from the land; Arabs ethnically cleansed Jews. Even so, a continuous Jewish presence remained in Palestine. Israel was not created in 1948, but restored. As Singer writes: ‘Israel's rights are not perfect or exclusive, but they are certainly strong enough so that it does not come to the table as a "thief of Palestinian land." The Palestinians' claims may be strong enough to justify giving them some of the land they want. But since the Palestinians have never been rulers of the land, it could not have been stolen from them. Palestinians, therefore, are claimants, not the victims of theft. Their behavior should be judged as the acts of a claimant seeking land to which he thinks he is entitled, not as the acts of a dispossessed owner.’

History of Israel in Ottoman Times
When the Ottoman Turks defected the Mameluke forces in 1517, Palestine came under the rule of a new empire that was to dominate the entire Near East for the next 400 years. At the outset, particularly during the reign of Sultan Suleiman, known in Arabic as "the Law maker," but better known as Suleiman the Magnificent, Jerusalem flourished. Walls and gates, which had lain in ruins since the Ayyubid period, were rebuilt. The ancient aqueduct was reactivated and public drinking fountains were installed. After Suleiman's death, however, cultural and economic stagnation set in, Jerusalem again became a small, unimportant town. For the next 300 years its population barely increased, while trade and commerce were frozen; Jerusalem became a backwater.
Although the renewal of Jerusalem's Jewish community is attributed to the activity of Nahmanides, who arrived in the city in 1267, the community's true consolidation occurred in the 15th and 16th centuries, with the influx of Jews who had been expelled from Spain.
The 19th century witnessed far-reaching changes, along with the gradual weakening of the Ottoman Empire. Political change in Jerusalem and indeed throughout the country was accelerated as part of a policy of Europeanization. European institutions in Jerusalem, particularly those of a religious character, enjoyed growing influence. Foreign consulates, merchants and settlers, grew in numbers and in power.
