The Arab countries occupy 640 times the land mass as does Israel and outnumber the Jews of Israel by nearly fifty to one. So much for Arab propaganda! N ow notice the TOTAL area of Israel and Jordan . This was referred to as "Pal estine" and mandated under British administration following World War I (see next map below). How convenient that today's Arab propagandists forget that land east of the Jordan River was also part of "Palestine" and is, in fact, the Arab-Palestinian State!

was willing to undertake. After a long exile, we've returned home. We bear no malice toward anyone

Brief History of Israel and the Jewish People
Quote from Charles Krauthammer - The Weekly Standard, May 11, 1998 "Israel is the very embodiment of Jewish continuity: It is the only nation on earth that inhabits the same land, bears the same name, speaks the same language, and worships the same God that it did 3,000 years ago. You dig the soil and you find pottery from Davidic times, coins from Bar Kokhba, and 2,000-year-old scrolls written in a script remarkably like the one that today advertises ice cream at the corner candy store." The people of Israel (also called the "Jewish People") trace their origin to Abraham, who established the belief that there is only one God, the creator of the universe (see Old Testament ). Abraham, his son Yitshak (Isaac), and grandson Jacob (Israel), are referred to as the patriarchs of the Israelites. All three patriarchs lived in the Land of Canaan, that later came to be known as the Land of Israel. They and their wives are buried in the Ma'arat HaMachpela, the Tomb of the Patriarchs, in Hebron The name Israel derives from the name given to Jacob (see Old Testament). His 12 sons were the kernels of 12 tribes that later developed into the Jewish nation. The name Jew derives from Yehuda (Judah) one of the 12 sons of Jacob. So, the names Israel, Israeli or Jewish refer to people of the same origin.

WORLDGUIDE Introduction See Image Gallery Transport Money Essential Info RELATED Thorn Tree Forum Postcards Travel Links Everyone has their own perception of what Israel and the Palestinian Territories (or just 'Israel' for brevity) are about: it's a travel agency package of beaches and sun; it's the Promised Land of the Jews; it's a ticking time bomb; it's the birthplace of Christ. And while it is all of these things, it's much more besides. Personal Security Issues The situation in Israel and the Palestinian Territories remains volatile and, in many parts, dangerous. In particular, the West Bank and Gaza Strip are unsafe; Nablus, Jenin and the Gaza Strip should be considered off-limits, except perhaps for essential daytime travel to Gaza City. The threat of Palestinian suicide bombings and retaliatory strikes by Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) mean the personal security situation in Israel is not reliable or predictable. Prospective travellers are advised to check consular travel advice.

O n 14 May 1948 the State of Israel was proclaimed according to the UN partition plan (1947). Less than 24 hours later, the regular armies of Egypt, Trans-Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Iraq invaded the country, forcing Israel to defend the sovereignty it had regained in its ancestral homeland. In what became known as Israel's War of Independence, the newly formed, poorly equipped Israel Defense Forces (IDF) repulsed the invaders in fierce intermittent fighting, which lasted some 15 months and claimed over 6,000 Israeli lives (nearly one percent of the country's Jewish population at the time). During the first few months of 1949, direct negotiations were conducted under UN auspices between Israel and each of the invading countries (except Iraq which has refused to negotiate with Israel to date), resulting in armistice agreements which reflected the situation at the end of the fighting. Accordingly, the coastal plain, Galilee and the entire Negev were within Israel's sovereignty, Judea and Samaria (the West Bank) came under Jordanian rule, the Gaza Strip came under Egyptian administration, and the city of Jerusalem was divided, with Jordan controlling the eastern part, including the Old City, and Israel the western sector.

    Rewriting Israel's History
    by Efraim Karsh
Efraim Karsh is director of the Mediterranean Studies Programme at King's College, University of London, and editor of the quarterly journal Israel Affairs. One of the reasons I gave up political history was that it is very difficult not to direct it towards the future, towards your idea of what ought to happen. And that somehow distorts your view of what has happened. Albert Hourani As Israel edges toward peace with the Palestinians, old, highly controversial, and seemingly defunct issues are back on the table, such as the legal status of Jerusalem and the question of the Palestinian refugees. The refugees and their present rights inspire two very different approaches. The Israeli view, based on an assessment of the 1947-49 period that ascribes primary responsibility for the Palestinian tragedy to an extremist and short-sighted leadership, sees Palestinian wounds as primarily self-inflicted and so not in need of compensation. In contrast, Palestinian spokesmen justify their "right of return" to the territory that is now part of the State of Israel (or an alternative compensation) by presenting themselves as victims of Jewish aggression in the late 1940s. Ironically, it is a group of Israelis who have given the Palestinian argument its intellectual firepower. Starting in 1987, an array of self-styled "new historians" has sought to debunk what it claims is a distorted "Zionist narrative." How valid is this sustained assault on the received version of Israel's early history? This question has real political importance, for the answer is bound to affect the course of Israeli-Palestinian efforts at making peace.

    57. A Totalitarian Concept Of History - Middle East Quarterly - September 1996

    A Totalitarian Concept of History
    by Avi Shlaim
Efraim Karsh makes a vigorous contribution to the debate about Israel's early history in his article. This debate began a decade ago, following the publication of books by Simha Flapan, Benny Morris, Ilan Pappé, and myself, and it clearly is still going strong. Although it has generated a great deal of heat, especially at the beginning, the debate itself is a wholly positive development and a reflection of the maturity of Israeli society. Karsh's contribution is significant because it is based on extensive reading and because it touches on issues that are fundamental to the "new" or revisionist school of writing about Israel's history.
    "Not Guilty"
Karsh makes many sweeping generalizations about the work of the new historians. I cannot really complain about this as I myself have similarly written in a shorthand fashion about the work of the "old," or Zionist, or traditionalist historians. But it should be stressed at the outset that there is no club, society, or trade union, let alone a political party with card-carrying members, of new historians. Nor is there collective responsibility for the new history; each new historian is responsible solely and exclusively for what he himself has written. I am not my brothers' keeper nor are they mine.
For my part, I wish to enter a plea of "not guilty" to nearly all the charges Karsh levels collectively against the new historians: I am not a "self-styled" new historian nor a self-styled guardian of truth and morality; I do not attempt to prove that the Jewish state was born in sin nor do I seek to champion the cause of the Palestinians; and I most emphatically do not fashion my research to suit contemporary political agendas. Karsh also charges the new historians of making much of their relatively young age; I have never referred to my age in print before, but, at the ripe age of fifty, I find it flattering to be described as young.
