History
ON MAY 14, 1948, in the city of Tel Aviv, David Ben-Gurion proclaimed the Declaration of the Establishment of the State of Israel. The introductory paragraph affirmed that "Eretz Ysrael (the Land of Israel) was the birthplace of the Jewish people. Here they first attained statehood, created cultural values of national and universal significance, and gave the world the eternal Book of Books." The issuance of the proclamation was signaled by the ritual blowing of the shofar (ram's-horn trumpet) and was followed by the recitation of the biblical verse (Lev. 25:10): "Proclaim liberty throughout the land and to all the inhabitants thereof." The same verse is inscribed on the American Liberty Bell in Independence Hall in Philadelphia. The reestablishment of the Jewish nation-state in Palestine has been the pivotal event in contemporary Jewish history. After nearly two millennia of exile, the Jewish people were brought together in their ancient homeland. Despite the ancient attachments of Jews to biblical Israel, the modern state of Israel is more deeply rooted in nineteenth- and twentieth- century European history than it is in the Bible. Thus, although Zionismthe movement to establish a national Jewish entityis rooted in the messianic impulse of traditional Judaism and claims a right to Palestine based on God's promise to Abraham, the vast majority of Zionists are secularists.

More Israel History
I returned The 50 Years War: Israel and the Arabs to the library today, after a few days of cramming it into the interstices of all my other holiday activities. This is a five-hour miniseries containing interviews with key figures, when alive, and actual footage from events as they happened. I was fascinated by this documentary, and came away with an even greater impression that there is no good side/bad side dichotomy, no absolutes of good and evil. There are in fact some pretty nasty characters on both sides, but the average people on both sides are caught up in a cycle of violence and territoriality which seems to magnify the darker aspects of human nature. Between this and what I've read so far, I don't really see any resolution to the conflicts in that region of the world during my lifetime. Sure, temporary solutions that seem to be the lasting peace, but nothing that will last several generations. Still, I suppose that's kind of a trite observation, considering how short a time ago the last battles in Europe were fought... Posted by dpwakefield at December 27, 2003 05:34 PM

“Build me a sanctuary, so I may dwell among you.” Keneseth Israel, founded in March 1847, was the fourth congregation to be established by the expanding Jewish community of Philadelphia. Orthodox in observance at first, KI adopted reform in 1855, and thus became the first progressive congregation in Philadelphia, and only the fifth in the entire country, to take the way of radical experimentation. For almost forty years, KI was the only reform congregation in Philadelphia. Keneseth Israel means congregation or assembly of Israel. The term Keneseth Israel is frequently used in the midrash to represent the entire people of Israel as a religious entity. We still hold to the goals of our founders: to maintain a synagogue as a center of worship, religious education and communal gathering; to foster a "living Judaism" not only in the synagogue, but also in the homes and lives of its members and their families; and to adjust the teachings and practices of old to the needs of each new generation of American Jews. Rich in years and distinguished in history, we maintain our dedication to the creative survival of Judaism as an eternal "light to the nations".
Reform Congregation Keneseth Israel, widely called KI, was founded in March 1847, the fourth congregation to be established by the expanding Jewish community of Philadelphia. Keneseth Israel adopted Reform in 1855 and thus became the first progressive congregation in Philadelphia. For almost 40 years, KI was the only Reform congregation in Philadelphia.

GE in Israel GE Israel History
GE established its presence in Israel in 1950 when General Engineers Ltd. was founded, making GE one of the first major U.S. corporations to operate in Israel. From then, and throughout the last five decades, GE's innovative products and services have been actively and successfully marketed in Israel via a network of distributors and direct operations. In the late 1990s, significant investments and acquisitions made GE an even stronger player within the country's rapidly developing high-tech industry.
GE Medical Systems in Israel currently employs over 350 people with global exports of over $100 million. This is the bedrock for GE Medical Systems' future growth in Israel.
GE Equity benefits from Israel's thriving high-tech industry. In 1998, it opened an office in Tel-Aviv and made its initial investment in the Giza Fund. Since then it continued to make many additional investments. GE Equity is very active in the private equity market in Israel.
GE Investments, the corporation's pension fund management, has holdings valued at more than $400 million both in public and private Israeli companies. This represents one of GE Investments' largest portfolio exposures to an emerging-market country.

The Story of the Middle East
Dennis Miller - Monday 10th Nov 2003
"A brief overview of the situation is always valuable, so as a service to all who still don't get it, I now offer you the story of the Middle East in just a few paragraphs, which is all you Really need.
Here we go:
The Palestinians want their own country.
There's just one thing about that: There are no Palestinians.
It's a made up word. Israel was called Palestine for two thousand years.
Like "Wiccan," "Palestinian" sounds ancient but is really a modern Invention. Before the Israelis won the land in war, Gaza was owned by Egypt, and there were no "Palestinians" then, and the West Bank Was owned by Jordan, and there were no "Palestinians" then. As soon as the Jews took over and started growing oranges as big as basketballs, what do you know, say hello to the Palestinians," weeping for Their deep bond with their lost "land" and "nation."
So for the sake of honesty, let's not use the word "Palestinian" any more to describe these delightful folks, who dance for joy at our Deaths until someone points out they're being taped. Instead, let's call them what they are: "Other Arabs Who Can't Accomplish Anything In Life And Would Rather Wrap Themselves In The Seductive Melodrama Of Eternal Struggle And Death."
