Blair shuttle moves to Israel
Assad delivered a public rebuff to Blair over civilian casualties JERSUSALEM (CNN) British Prime Minister Tony Blair is in Israel Thursday on the latest round of shuttle diplomacy over the war against terrorism. His visit follows a difficult day in Damascus where he heard first hand Arab anger at the U.S.-led bombing campaign in Afghanistan. At a joint news conference, Syrian President Bashar Assad denounced the air raids for causing "hundreds" of civilian casualties. It was Blair's first face-to-face confrontation with the controversy caused by the U.S. and UK campaign, although aides insisted later he had expected Assad to restate his well-known hostility to the bombing. JERUSALEM (CNN) Israel and the United States are conducting a series of joint military missions this week and next to improve naval commands and protect Israelis from missile attacks. The two countries will conduct joint exercises next week, possibly as soon as Sunday, to test Israel's new Arrow anti-missile system teamed with upgraded U.S. Patriot missile batteries, Israeli sources told CNN Thursday. It will be the first time for Israel's new $2 million Arrow system to be tested with the Patriots. On New Year's Day, the two nations teamed up with Turkey for an annual naval training exercise. While described as routine, the exercise comes as the United States increasingly appears headed to war.

The booklet written below is now mainly of historical interest, since the period to which it refers is more than a quarter-century remote from the present. Moreover the booklet itself was written in 1981, which is two decades ago. It has been revised twice, but the revisions were mainly concerned with the correction of typos and grammatical errors (since the original was written by typewriter), and have not, for the most part, dealt with the changes in the kibbutz situation as it stands at present. As a result, much of the material given below is out of date, and many of the things said herein should be taken with a pinch of salt. However, it might still be well worth a read, because literature on the subject of Kibbutzim is very scanty, whether for that period or otherwise, especially on the Internet. Israel strikes back after university bombing
The scene at Hebrew University after the bombing Wednesday. NABLUS, West Bank (CNN) Israel launched a military operation in Palestinian-controlled Nablus early Friday morning, moving into the West Bank city with more than 150 armored vehicles, Palestinian security sources told CNN. At least one Palestinian was seriously wounded, and the Israeli army is not letting ambulances in or out of the city, the sources said. Apache helicopter gunships, tanks, armored personnel carriers and bulldozers were part of the Israeli force, along with other helicopter gunships and surveillance helicopters, the sources said. Heavy machine-gun fire was reported on the outskirts of the city. The Israelis entered the city from five different directions just before 2:30 a.m. (7:30 p.m. Thursday EDT) and reached the city center about a half hour later, the sources said.

Arafat asks Tenet to pressure Israel, aide says
Sharon heading to Washington next week to meet Bush
Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, center, meets Monday with his Cabinet in Ramallah, West Bank. RAMALLAH, West Bank (CNN) Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat asked CIA Director George Tenet on Tuesday to pressure Israel to stop its daily incursions into Palestinian cities and refugee camps, a senior Arafat aide told Voice of Palestine Radio. Nabil Abu Rudeineh said Arafat also asked Tenet to push Israel to disband the military cordons it has established around many Palestinian cities and villages. Since the end of the Israeli military campaign in the West Bank in May, Israeli troops have ringed Palestinian cities and refugee camps, staging limited incursions and making arrests in what Israeli security sources have said are attempts to head off suicide bombers. Security sources Tuesday said Israeli troops shot and killed a Palestinian after a truck carrying two Israelis was stoned and overturned near Hebron, injuring both Israelis, one of them seriously.

Israel delays implementation of peace deal
Yasser Arafat, left, and Benjamin Netanyahu shake hands at last month's meeting in Washington, D.C.
November 2, 1998
Web posted at: 5:56 a.m. EST (1056 GMT) JERUSALEM (AP) Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday that the land-for-security agreement with the Palestinians will get off to a late start because Israel's Cabinet and parliament have not yet approved it. The agreement was to take effect Monday, but the Cabinet will only discuss it on Tuesday, with no date set for a vote. Parliament will not vote on the agreement until next week. U.S. officials said that despite the delays, the timetable should not be disrupted. Under the plan, Israel is to withdraw from 13 percent of the West Bank over 12 weeks, with each phase accompanied by Palestinian security measures, such as the confiscation of illegal weapons. In the first week, no major Israeli steps are required. The Palestinians are to outline their plan for fighting Islamic militants to the United States, and several Israeli-Palestinian committees are to begin meeting.

Israel mulls suicide bomb response
Scenes of bombing aftermath in Tel Aviv TEL AVIV, Israel (CNN) The Israeli Cabinet is to consider whether to end a ceasefire after a suicide bomber killed 18 people in Tel Aviv. The bomb exploded in front of a crowded disco late Friday, inflicting the highest death toll of any single incident since the violence resumed in the region eight months ago, Israeli police said. At least 115 others were injured 10 of them seriously, 22 moderately and 54 lightly, according to hospital sources. Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was meeting with his defence and foreign ministers on Saturday morning, and the full 10-member security Cabinet was due to convene later in the day. Sharon had been scheduled to leave soon for Europe but that trip could be postponed in light of the attack. Sharon spokesman Ranaan Gissin told CNN that despite Friday's attack, Israel remains "committed to the ceasefire ... committed to peace."

Introduction
Ancient times
Introduction The struggle between the Israelis and the Palestinians is one of the most enduring and explosive of all the world's conflicts. It has its roots in the historic claim to the land which lies between the eastern shores of the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan river. For the Palestinians the last 100 years have brought colonisation, expulsion and military occupation, followed by a long and difficult search for self-determination and for coexistence with the nation they hold responsible for their suffering and loss. For the Jewish people of Israel, the return to the land of their forefathers after centuries of persecution around the world has not brought peace or security. They have faced many crises as their neighbours have sought to wipe their country off the map. BBC News Online highlights some of the key dates of recent Middle East history and looks back at the origins and development of the Arab-Israeli conflict. Back to Top News Sources Privacy

'Israel: 50 Years' captures the moments
April 29, 1998 Web posted at: 4:15 p.m. EDT (1615 GMT) (CNN) The process of building a nation is never easy, and seldom peaceful. Those looking for examples of this need look no further than "Israel: 50 Years," a photographic book filled with arresting images of the Jewish state's birth and growth. Click here to see more photos from "Israel: 50 Years". The book, published by the Aperture Foundation, uses the best photographs taken by the cameras of Magnum, an association of outstanding news photographers. An example: a picture of survivors of the Holocaust, taken by Magnum founder Robert Capa. "Capa was the most fabulous of the Magnum photographers," photojournalist Burt Glinn said recently on CNN's Sunday Morning. "He was the first one to go to Israel. And he was one of the reasons I went to Israel." The image is just one of many that conveys the emotional extremes felt by the country. Another, taken by James Nachtwey, shows a small boy being taught by Israeli troops how to fire a gun.
