History

The number of Jews in Palestine is about 12,000.
The Zionist movement is started in Basel, Switzerland. Zionism's goal was to establish "for the Jewish people a home in Palestine secured by public law".
November 2: The Balfour declaration , a letter by the foreign secretary Arthur James Balfour to the English Zionist leader lord Rothschild, gives support to the Zionist case. The Jews organize their own social and political institutions, which exercise much control over their own population. Hebrew language is fostered, and the Hebrew University is founded in Jerusalem The League of Nations adopt the Balfour declaration, and leaves Britain in charge of Palestine, and in assisting the Jews in "reconstituting their national home in that country". Jews represent 11% of the population in Palestine with their 85,000, compared to the 670,000 Palestinians. Large influx of Jews, frightened by persecution in Germany. New towns and villages were created, hundreds of kibbutzes founded. 175,000 Jews and 860,000 Arabs live in Palestine (17%).

    (2004 edition) Highlights
Remember the days of old, consider the years of ages past.... (Deuteronomy 32:7) The birthplace of the Jewish people is the Land of Israel (Eretz Israel). There, a significant part of the nations long history was enacted, of which the first thousand years are recorded in the Bible; there, its cultural, religious and national identity was formed; and there, its physical presence has been maintained through the centuries, even after the majority was forced into exile. During the many years of dispersion, the Jewish people never severed nor forgot its bond with the Land. With the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, Jewish independence, lost two thousand years earlier, was renewed.
    Archeology in Israel
has provided a valuable link between the country's past and present, with thousands of years of history unearthed at some 3,500 sites. Many finds attest to the long connection of the Jewish people with the Land of Israel, including Solomon's stables at Megiddo (Jezreel Valley), houses of the Israelite period in the City of David (Jerusalem), ritual baths at Masada, numerous synagogues and the Dead Sea scrolls, containing the earliest extant copy of the Book of Isaiah in still-legible Hebrew script. Excavations have also revealed vestiges of other civilizations which left their imprint on the Land over the centuries. All finds are recorded, and historical sites are carefully preserved and marked, for scholar and visitor alike.

Take a close look at this PRESENT DAY MAP of the Middle East. Israel in yellow is surrounded by 24 Arab nations. If someone can explain to us how "expansionist Israel" is "taking over" the Middle East, please e-mail us. The Arab countries occupy 600 times the land mass as does Israel and outnumber the Jews of Israel by nearly fifty to one. So much for Arab propaganda! Now notice the TOTAL area of Israel (in yellow ) and Jordan (in red ). This was referred to as "Palestine" and mandated under British administration following World War I (see next map below) .

Most of the Palestinian population were now stateless refugees driven from their traditional lands. Many thousands ended up in squalid refugee camps in Lebanon. Others sought out relatives in Jordan, over half of whose population is of Palestinian descent. Others moved further afield: as with the Jews, Palestinian communities with many of the same attributes (a focus on education, business and professional skills) have grown up throughout the world.
Arafat died in November 2004 in a Parisian hospital (where he had been flown for medical treatment) of an undisclosed mystery condition involving low blood platelets, resulting in him retreating into a coma that rendered him multiple organ failure, a brain hemorrhage and, finally, death. Aged 75, the Palestinians' pioneer had given no prior warning of ill-health before his sudden slip into sickness. His death caused widespread disbelief among the Palestinian people who had thought their leader invincible for evading death on several famous occasions, most notably in an airplane crash and from an attempted assassination. However, fears that the Palestinian movement would degenerate into chaos have so far proven unfounded, although there are no signs that the Palestinians plan to relent their ongoing struggle for reclamation of land and rights.

    Rabbi Marc Kline
The History of Temple Adath Israel
On November 1, 1903, at 7:30 p.m., a handful of Jewish Lexington pioneers gathered in the Phoenix Lodge Room on West Short Street to discuss the possibilities of organizing a temple "...for the purpose of religious services, a Sabbath school and other matters pertaining to the moral elevation among the Jewish people of Lexington and Central Kentucky. The matter was heartily approved and on January 24, 1904, the first permanent officers were elected: Fred Lazarus, president; Simon Wolf, vice-president; I. Jay Miller, secretary; and William Moses, treasurer. Rabbi George Zepin delivered the first sermon. The following month, the services of Rabbi Leo Mannheimer of Chattanooga were engaged to conduct a monthly service and the group was granted membership in the Union of American Hebrew Congregations. At the April 8, 1904 meeting, it was announced that Samuel Goldenson had accepted this pulpit offered to him upon his graduation from the Hebrew Union College in June of that year. On July 11, 1904, the group formally incorporated under the laws of the Commonwealth of Kentucky as "Adath Israel Congregation" for the purpose of "...conducting and maintaining religious institutions and religious worship, teaching and training according to the customs of American Israelites.”
