NATIONAL PROFILES OF LANGUAGES IN EDUCATION: ISRAEL : LANGUAGE POLICY
Bernard Spolsky and Elana Shohamy, Language Policy Research Center
    Languages in society
While Israel is highly multilingual, with a 20% Arabic-speaking minority and large number of languages used by its enormous immigrant population such as the 600,000 Russian speakers and the 50,000 Ethiopians who have arrived in the last few years , Hebrew is the dominant language for official, public and private use of the 5,500,000 citizens. Significantly, the revitalization of Hebrew as a major component in Zionism and Jewish nationalism has guaranteed the language a status that is ideologically highly privileged. One of the concomitants of this secular Zionist ideology has been the strong encouragement of Hebrew learning and use by immigrants, and the active discouragement of public (or even private use) of the other languages known by the population. (Hallel and Spolsky, 1993; Shohamy, 1994; Spolsky, 1996) Official language policy, while not explicit, has supported this "monocentricism," and an associated Hebrew-Arabic bilingualism among the minority Arab-speaking population. The Hebrew-Arabic bilingualism is highly skewed in favor of Hebrew. Notwithstanding its relatively successful maintenance as a social, educational, literary and cultural language among Israeli Arabs, Arabic remains the language of a minority. In spite of the widespread official and ideological policy support for Hebrew, English has continued to flourish and spread in all sectors of the Israeli population.

Bush is a Bad Roll Model for Our Children

We all want our children to become the best that they can be intellectually, emotionally and spiritually. We know that children learn from observing adults around them and from authoritative figures. They learn by example.
Seeing how the President of the United States is considered by our children and some adults to be one of the most authoritative people in the country, (even if he isn’t) what he says and does has some impact on the their values.
Americans must ask themselves this question: What are the children learning from this sad episode in our countries history? The sad truth is that our children are learning from the Bush Administration and the people who support him that it’s okay to tell a lie to get something you really desire. They’re learning not to let the real truth get in the way of their desires. If you have to tell more lies to cover for the first lie so be it. The only thing that matters is that you get what you want.
President Bush himself has never admitted to being a liar, but anybody with an open mind now knows or should know that the uranium from Niger story is nothing but a lie. Some in this Administration continue to call the lie technically correct and that President Bush didn’t know at the time of his State of the Union Address that the story was based on a forgery (another lie to cover for the first lie).

Path to peace runs through a history of tumult
For centuries the Middle East has been a site of conflict over land sacred to Christians, Muslims and Jews.
And while the echoes of the older conflict still ring in the crashing stones and staccato gunfire of the current dispute, an understanding of the conflict's history cannot undo decades of mistrust and animosity between the Israelis and Palestinians.

Israel 's governmental system is based on several basic laws enacted by its unicameral parliament, the Knesset . The president (chief of state, a largely ceremonial role ) is elected by the Knesset for a 5-year term. Since August , this post has been filled by Moshe Katsav . The prime minister head of government ) exercises executive power. Every 4 years there are national elections to the Knesset. In 2003 there were 13 poltical parties represented, from socialist (including arab parties) to liberals, right wing conservatives and Jewish orthodox parties. The largest are the "Avoda" (Labour) social-democrat party and the "Likud" (unity) right wing conservative party. The prime minister is selected by the president as the party leader most able to form a government, based on the number of parliament seats his coalition has won.
