Fatalities in Palestinian Terror Attacks
64 (38 before Oslo, 26 after Oslo) The number of people killed by Palestinian terrorists in the five years immediately after the Oslo accord (256) was greater than the number killed in the 15 years preceding the agreement (216). During the six years of the first uprising (Dec. 9, 1987 to Sep. 9, 1993), 172 people were murdered. More than 1,000 Israelis have been killed during the "al-Aqsa uprising" beginning in September 2000. Note: Figures include Israeli civilians and security personnel, and foreigners killed in Palestinian terrorist attacks in Israel and the territories. They do not include Palestinians killed by other Palestinians on suspicion of cooperating with Israel. The date of September 9, 1993, is used to mark the beginning of the Oslo process since it was on that date that PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat and Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin exchanged letters in which Arafat renounced terrorism and recognized Israel. These letters were incorporated into the

Israeli government must stop human rights abuses
against trafficked women

"I had a nervous breakdown. I wanted to escape from this place and asked a client to help me. He turned out to be one of them and I was beaten up by the owners. There was nowhere to run there were bars on the windows and bodyguards all the time, day and night."
(Testimony of a woman trafficked from Moldova)
The Israeli government is failing to protect the human rights of women and girls who are trafficked from countries of the former Soviet Union to work in Israel's sex industry, Amnesty International said today in a new report.
"Many of these women and girls become 'commodities', literally bought and sold for thousands of dollars or held in debt bondage. They are locked up in apartments and have their passports and travel tickets confiscated. Many women are subjected to violence, including rape. Yet most of the people who commit such human rights abuses are never brought to justice by the Israeli government," the organization said.

Israel: government of provocateurs denounces settler provocation in Jerusalem
By Rick Kelly 15 April 2005 Use this version to print Send this link by email Email the author Far-right Zionists attempted to storm a disputed religious site in Jerusalem April 10. Approximately 50 members of the Revava organisation rallied at Haram al Sharif, home to the Al Aqsa Mosque, in an inflammatory effort to scuttle the pending removal of Israeli settlements from Gaza. These and other statements went largely unremarked and uncontested in the international media, despite the fact that they constitute an unwitting self-indictment of the Likud-led government. The Sharon government which is today condemning the Zionist demonstration at the Al Aqsa compound as a provocation came to power as a result of a similar provocation on September 29, 2000. In the event, the attempt to rally thousands of supporters for the settler protest last Sunday failed. Of the 50 individuals who turned up, 31 were arrested. About 3,000 Israeli police, including riot officers, blockaded entry points to the shrine.

GOVERNMENT Israel is a parliamentary democracy. Its governmental system is based on several basic laws enacted by its unicameral parliament, the Knesset. The president (chief of state) is elected by the Knesset for a 5-year term. The prime minister (head of government) exercises executive power and has in the past been selected by the president as the party leader most able to form a government. Between May 1996 and March 2001, Israelis voted for the prime minister directly. (The legislation which required the direct election of the prime minister was rescinded by the Knesset in March 2001.) The members of the cabinet must be collectively approved by the Knesset. The Knesset's 120 members are elected by secret ballot to 4-year terms, although the prime minister may decide to call for new elections before the end of the 4-year term. Voting is for party lists rather than for individual candidates, and the total number of seats assigned each party reflects that party's percentage of the vote. Successful Knesset candidates are drawn from the lists in order of party-assigned rank. Under the present electoral system, all members of the Knesset are elected at large.
