A GENERAL GEOGRAPHICAL OVERVIEW
THE LAND
An understanding of the geography of the ancient world is of tremendous value in understanding the Bible. It is my conviction that a good Bible atlas is an essential tool for any serious student of the Bible, that is why I felt the need to create a tool like this. The brief notes that follow are for you to read and follow along on the map. We will begin with the area to the north of the Persian Gulf. Click on the below map to get a picture of this area.
Map of the Near East in Abraham's Time
Two rivers flow into the Persian Gulf: the Euphrates and, farther to the east, the Tigris. Between these rivers lies a valley which is usually called simply the Tigris and Euphrates River Valley. Beginning with this valley and moving north and northwest, then back down the coast of the Mediterranean and into Egypt is a geographical feature known as the Fertile Crescent, which has long been regarded as the cradle of civilization. It is within this area that most of the events of the Old Testament take place.
Modern-day Israel occupies that land which once made up ancient Palestine (and before that Canaan). Modern Syria and Lebanon together make up what was once known simply as Syria, which lay along the northern portion of the eastern Mediterranean seaboard, bordering Palestine to the north. Be sure to note the difference between Syria, and Assyria. The latter was a kingdom which occupied the northern part of the Tigris-Euphrates valley, that area which is today encompassed by Iraq. The Old Testament is largely concerned with the areas of Babylonia - in the southern portion of the Tigris-Euphrates valley, on the northern end of the Persian Gulf - and Assyria in the Tigris- Euphrates valley, of Syria and Palestine (also known as Canaan), and of Egypt.

Regionaltour shows connections between authentic Bible sites, inspiring vistas and the Bible crossroads. It immediately connects groups to the land, roots and texts of biblical faith. While politics, boundaries, culture, religion and other changes may be imposed upon the face of the land, it is the land that changes the least. The land is the changeless carrier of the Word. This reality may have prompted Cyril of Jerusalem to write, "the land is the fifth gospel."
Regionaltour is a fresh departure from the usual Holy Land tour that rushes between traditional crowded church shrines and souvenir shops, those standard tours that often instill more blur than blessing.
Regionaltour features itineraries with authentic sites, daily gentle walks, inspiring vistas all customized exactly as the tour leader requests
IGM TOURS offers customized group tours at wholesale prices for church/parish tour ministries and academic tours of historical geography of the Lands of the Bible: Israel, Jordan, Egypt, Turkey (Asia Minor), Greece and Italy.
IGM TOURS also operates European Christian Heritage Tours for Lutherans, Presbyterians, Methodists, and other interests.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course will cover the geography of international relations, with a focus on major long-term conflicts and on the geographic background of events in the news at the time the course is offered. Current events are shaped by geographic factors. Most international and internal conflicts involve neighboring states or adjacent national/ethnic populations. Political and economic alliances such as free trade agreements also tend to be based on proximity. Political relationships are determined in part by demographic, cultural (ethnic, religious, linguistic), and economic differences. Disputes commonly occur along human geographic frontiers, the demographic or economic divides across which people feel sharply different from their neighbors. The ability to project military force beyond immediate neighbors has historically marked superpowers, yet the recent upsurge in international terrorism has altered the spatial component of power. The physical form of the earth's landmasses and related patterns of climate and resource distribution also influence international affairs through their effects on human population distribution, urbanization, agricultural productivity, and economic development.

Israel (area=20,770 sq. km.), a country slightly smaller than New Jersey, is located in the Middle East, bordering the Mediterranean Sea, between Egypt (area=1,001,450 sq. km.) and Lebanon (area=10,400 sq. km.) on the coast and bordering Jordan (area=92,300 sq. km.) and Syria (area=185,180 sq. km.) inland. Another way to visualize Israel's size is to note that Lake Erie along the northern border of the U.S. is considerably bigger than Israel (approx. 25,700 sq. km.) The territories occupied by Israel since the 1967 war are not included in the area of 20,770 sq. km.. These territories are Judea, Samaria (the "West Bank")
