Last week, a Palestinian suicide bomber blew himself up on a Tel Aviv bus, propelling pounds of densely packed metal shrapnel into the vehicle's passengers. Five people were killed instantly, and 60 others wounded. The event presumably failed to darken the day of Ted Honderich, a Canadian-born philosopher who teaches at University College London. Last week, he told an audience in Toronto that Palestinians have a "moral right" to blow up Jews. And he encourages them to exercise it: "To claim a moral right on behalf of the Palestinians to their terrorism is to say that they are right to engage in it, that it is permissible if not obligatory." In Britain, where Honderich now lives, his theories have generated controversy. A disgusted Daily Telegraph reviewer called his new book, After the Terror, "one of the worst books I have ever read." But on his Canadian tour, Honderich was greeted warmly. Following his lecture at the University of Toronto, audience members lined up to respectfully parse the fine points of his philosophical theories. And since Honderich blames the West and Israel for what happened on Sept. 11, the CBC naturally regards him as star material. On Sept. 8, Michael Enright interviewed Honderich on national radio an opportunity Honderich used to repeat his claim that suicide bombings are a proper response to Israel's "rape" of Palestine.

127. The Tabernacle Of Israel: Samaritan Interpretation
Glencairn Museum's mission is to educate visitors about the history of religion, using art and artifacts from a variety of cultures and time periods.
http://www.glencairnmuseum.org/tabernacle/si.htm
As in Biblical times, the Samaritans still exist today in the West Bank in Israel. Now only a few hundred in number, the Samaritans consider themselves to be the descendants of Aaron, the brother of Moses and original high priest of the Tabernacle. Aaron's family was promised the "covenant of everlasting priesthood" by God in Numbers 25:11-13 . The Samaritans therefore teach that, while Aaron's priesthood stood in covenant with God, the later priesthood of Eli was an illegitimate one, and the entire kingship of Israel was illegitimate with it. It is the Tabernacle, then, and not the Temple in Jerusalem, which they believe was the single most holy place for the Jewish people. The Tabernacle is, for this community, the beginning and end of God's relationship with humanity. It was set up on Mt. Gerizim by Joshua, and will be reinstalled on Mt. Gerizim in the messianic age. The Samaritans believe that the tent, its vessels, and even the holy fire on its altar, were hidden away after the death of Uzzi, the eighth High Priest in the line of Aaron. While the Tabernacle remains hidden, the Samaritan people continue to worship and offer animal sacrifices on Mt. Gerizim even today. It is believed that with the coming of the Messiah the tent will be brought out from hiding, and with it all cosmological order will be restored and perfected. The Tabernacle is so sacred that only with its reinstitution can the Law of Moses be fully understood and enacted.

NJJN Middlesex Correspondent
When the telephone rang last week on the desk of Andrew Getraer, executive director of Rutgers University Hillel, the news coming over the line simply confirmed something he already knew to be true.
Over the four years he has been at Hillel, Getraer said, AIPAC consistently grouped Rutgers with campuses struggling under a cloud of anti-Israel sentiment, such as Columbia University and the University of California at Berkeley.
It was just such activities that prompted AIPAC to reclassify the Rutgers campus, according to Josh Block, a spokesman for the advocacy organization, which along with Hillel International and 27 other agencies is a member of the Israel on Campus Coalition.
NJ Jewish News
Among the events being planned are workshops for pro-Israel student activists, screenings of Israeli films, a visit by an Israeli journalist, a legislative-impact trip to Washington, an Israel advocacy Shabbaton, and an Israel programs fair, according to Getraer. The third edition of The Rutgers Student Journal of Israel Affairs is on track to be published in the spring, and Getraer hopes to launch a campaign to encourage the university to invest in Israeli companies. In addition, in November, Hillel will reprise the Israel culture festival it initiated last year.

The State of Arts in Israel: Music
by Natan Mishori
In the early years of the state, some 13 years after the central "towers" of music in Israel were built - the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra , which was founded in Tel Aviv in 1936 on the initiative of the Jewish violinist, Bronislav Huberman who brought the best Jewish players from Europe, and the Israel Broadcasting Authority Orchestra, which was founded in Jerusalem in the same year - every music loving citizen could travel to hear concerts performed, mainly by musicians from the "towers," and only seldom would he have to choose between two concerts on the same day. Today the situation is radically different. Anyone willing to devote an entire week to hearing the concerts given throughout Israel, could not manage it. Even hearing more than one concert a day, one could attend but a minuscule part of all the musical events in the country, which, geographically speaking, is one of the smallest among the countries of western musical culture, but one constantly expanding in breadth and depth. For example, on a typical Friday morning, one could hear concerts with explanations given by the Tel Aviv Symphony Orchestra in the auditorium of the Israel Conservatory or a chamber-music concert at the Tel Aviv Museum. In the afternoon, one could choose between a symphonic concert performed by the Philharmonic in the Mann Auditorium, or a performance of the New Israel Opera in the Golda Meir Arts Centre, inaugurated in October, 1994. If music-lovers would rather hear Bach's B minor Mass, they could go to the Recanati Auditorium in the Tel Aviv Museum or drive to the church in Abu-Ghosh near

Cultural Zionism
Israel Table of Contents The counterpoint to Herzl's political Zionism was provided by Asher Ginsberg, better known by his pen name Ahad HaAm (One of the People). Ahad HaAm, who was the son of a Hasidic rabbi, was typical of the Russian maskalim . In 1886, at the age of thirty, he moved to Odessa with the vague hope of modernizing Judaism. His views on Zionism were rooted in the changing nature of Jewish communal life in Eastern Europe. Ahad HaAm realized that a new meaning to Jewish life would have to be found for the younger generation of East European Jews who were revolting against traditional Jewish practice. Whereas Jews in the West could participate in and benefit from a secular culture, Jews in the East were oppressed. While Herzl focused on the plight of Jews alone, Ahad HaAm was also interested in the plight of Judaism, which could no longer be contained within the limits of traditional religion. Ahad HaAm's solution was cultural Zionism: the establishment in Palestine of small settlements aimed at reviving the Jewish spirit and culture in the modern world. In the cultural Zionist vision, a small number of Jewish cadres well versed in Jewish culture and speaking Hebrew would settle in Palestine. Ahad HaAm believed that by settling in that ancient land, religious Jews would replace their metaphysical attachment to the Holy Land with a new Hebrew cultural renaissance. Palestine and the Hebrew language were important not because of their religious significance but because they had been an integral part of the Jewish people's history and cultural heritage.

BOYCOTT ISRAEL CAMPAIGN CULTURAL BOYCOTT OF ISRAEL
While Israeli artists have the freedom to express themselves and exhibit freely around the world, the artistic talent of Palestine is wasted by illegal occupation and apartheid, curfew, imprisonment and attack, in refugee camps and exile.Cultural life struggles for survival and development under attack and siege. The cultural boycott exists as a way to express people's growing outrage over Israeli occupation and war crimes and the British government's failure to act ethically. Its a peaceful means of putting international pressure on the state of Israel. If politicians won't act people must!
A call from Palestinian Artists To the international community of artists, intellectuals and academics In this offensive thousands of homes were destroyed, as were the electrical, water and telephone systems. Every major office and civil installation was summarily entered, ransacked, pillaged, and records removed, including the ministries of Education, Culture, Health, and Civil Affairs. Archeological and cultural heritage sites were callously destroyed. Cultural and Art centers barbarically vandalized, musical instruments broken, paintings damaged, and artists detained; the aim was to set back Palestinian life by at least a generation, to make it unviable, to render Palestinian national and cultural existence on Palestinian land untenable.
