AVI MACHLIS
Jewish Telegraphic Agency Dana International's triumphant visit to the Knesset was something of a surprise in the world of Israeli politics. To many secular Israelis, the appearance earlier this month of Israel's raven-haired transsexual singing star before the legislature's Education and Culture Committee was a victory in what Israeli newspapers recently dubbed an ongoing "cultural war."
The opening shot, they say, was the successful pressure by the fervently Orthodox, or haredim, to censor the Batsheva dance troupe's act at Israel's official jubilee celebrations because the dancers were scheduled to strip to their underwear as part of the performance. But Dana's triumph, say some analysts, may have played into the hands of the haredim by confirming their stereotypes of secular culture. And a closer look at the so-called cultural war shows that it has little to do with culture, and a lot to do with politics and power.
After her recent triumph at the annual Eurovision song contest where she rose to sudden prominence Dana casually gave Tourism Minister Moshe Katzav a kiss in front of the cameras while clad in skin-tight clothes. "I don't regard myself as anyone's symbol," she said. "I see myself as a singer." Photo opportunities such as these were a perfect opportunity for secular Knesset members from the right and left to prove they were not beholden to the fervently Orthodox. But when Dana arrived in the Knesset, fervently Orthodox lawmakers did not interfere

The Bi-Polar Description of Israel's Culture Conflict
IT IS COMMONPLACE TO DESCRIBE the primary conflict in Israeli-Jewish culture and society aspitting religious Jews and their culture against secular Jews and their culture. Secular and religiousJews, it is argued, live in separate worlds of thought, of ideals, of norms. Virtually all Israelis whoaddress themselves to the topic of political culture agree about the existence of these two competing cultural-political camps; the disagreement is whether dialogue or conciliation between them is desirable. Those who think it desirable are inclined to describe the differences in moderate terms or stress the dependence of each side on the other. Those who oppose conciliation tend to caricature the other side by portraying it in terms of its own extremes. The latter strategy has been characteristic of haredi (ultra-orthodox) leaders, but following the Rabin assassination one found frequent caricatures of the religious on the part of the non-religious. Menachem Brinker, for example, writes that the basis for a dialogue between the two cultures no longer exists. He attributes this to the consequences of the Six Day War and the manner in which the young generation of religious Zionists understood that War.

    Israel's Culture War Escalates
    by Conrad Goeringer
American Atheists December 5, 1996 In Israel, the battle between religious fundamentalists and civil libertarian secularists continues. Recall that ever since the election of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, that country's religious political groups have been flexing their muscles, demanding important government ministerial posts, and calling for strict enforcement of laws designed to "protect" orthodoxy and Sabbath. For months, thousands of Orthodox Jews (almost exclusively beard-wearing, heavily suited men) have poured onto Bar Ilan Street in Tel Aviv, demanding that the traffic artery be shut down during the holy period. (Already, the orthodox have succeeded in turning off an Israeli communications satellite!) In addition to wanting to eventually ban traffic on the Sabbath, the orthodox have also taken on the problematic symbols of modernity and cosmopolitanism everything from McDonald's restaurants to cafes, bars and movie houses. Now, a poll by the Israeli daily newspaper Yediot Aharonot reports that 47% of those questioned believe that friction between secular and religious groups could lead to civil war.

2003-2004: Dialogue Through Culture - Keeping the Hope Alive
Background In response to this challenge the Israel Center has decided to dedicate the Spring Performing Arts Series to the topic of co-existence and dialogue. We also decided that the appropriate way of bringing the message would be through dialogue between Jewish and Arab artists. Audiences seem to be much more receptive to the message of artists than that of politicians, and culture has a very powerful way of conveying important ideas. The Program This spring, the Israel Center is bringing to the Bay Area a three-part performance arts series that is a dialogue through music, dance, and theater. All three performances are presented by a Jew and an Arab who collaborate in their respective artistic fields. The performances will be staged at small theaters throughout the Bay Area. Nations like to imagine themselves as unique, but one belief they have in common is that it is noble to die in their name. Death and redemption are the themes of almost every form of patriotism. In the case of Israel, however, the connection between nationalism and death is especially visceral. For the Jewish state is a nation that emerged from the ashes of a project of extermination, and that sees itself as the best defense against the renewal of violent persecution. Zionism, the state's ruling ideology, is a triumphal creed shadowed by death.
When he returned to Palestine four years later, he was called by the Jewish community leadership to northern Galilee to help organize the defense of small frontier-zone outposts against attacks by Arab militias allied with the newly established, British-backed regime of Faysal in Damascus. These outposts had been created by Jewish settlers as a way of establishing the northern border of Palestine, an issue of contention between France and Britain. In 1920, a year after his return to Palestine, Trumpeldor was mortally wounded while defending the outposts at Tel Hai, a commemorative "holy place." Along with five of his comrades, he was buried near Tel Hai. In 1934 a memorial was erected at his gravesite, and it soon became, for Zionist youth movements, a place of pilgrimage nearly as important as Masada, where, according to the Zionist interpretation of Flavius Josephus, Jewish rebels committed mass suicide rather than surrender to the Romans in AD 73.

    Olive Culture in Ancient Israel
    by David Eitam
David Eitam is an archeologist who specialized in ancient industries of the Holy Land. Four years ago he founded “More Netofa”, a private company that produces gourmet olive oil, honey and spice mixtures, using ancient recipes and modern methods. He also conducts workshops about olive oil, at his home, in Hararit in the Galilee (see related article). The olive tree and its oil have been major components in the culture and rituals of Ancient Israel and the economy of its inhabitants throughout history. Its prominent status is revealed by numerous verses in the Old Testament, the Mishnah and the Talmud.
