ADVERTISING INFORMATION Tel Aviv - Culture Next to the magical holy city of Jerusalem, Tel Aviv seems more like the city of sin. Your first reaction to it may be negativeto the newcomer it appears muggy, congested, and ill planned, and scarred with boxy, concrete buildings. But what it lacks in grandeur, Tel Aviv makes up for in vitality. One-third of Israel's populationa number approaching 2 millionlives in this 138-square-kilometer (55-square-mile) metropolis. Half a million cars enter and leave the city every day. Residents of other towns swell the population further on weekends, when they make Tel Aviv their playground. The city is Israel's centre of commerce and culture, and it bustles with restaurants, art galleries, museums, and beaches. The Tel Aviv of today is already vastly different from the Tel Aviv of 50 years ago. Although northern Tel Aviv has traditionally been the city's flashy, affluent half, it's the oft-neglected south that gets attention now. Here, gentrification projects in many neighbourhoods are changing the area's face; each week the scaffolding rises on another building, and new restaurants and shops appear. Tel Aviv has come a long way in its short life; look around and try to imagine the scene just 90 years ago, when this teeming metropolis was nothing but sand. FLEAMARKET Start by treating yourself to a fresh-from-the-oven pita at the Aboulafia Bakery, walk up the street, and turn left. You will have no doubt that you are approaching the Jaffa Flea Market and soon find yourself at a row of shops primarily featuring oriental rugs and, more likely than not, at least one cluster of people huddled over a backgammon board

ADVERTISING INFORMATION Haifa - Culture Where "Carmel touches the sea" lies the city of Haifa. Flanked by the Mediterranean, crowned by Mt. Carmel, it is Israel's third largest city, a gem of scenic beauty and the capital of the northern Israel. A city of sea and mountain, it is divided into three distinct levels, linked by the "Carmelit", Israel's only subway: the "lower city" with the dockside and business centers, "Hadar HaCarmel" with its residential and commercial centers and "Har HaCarmel", which is mostly residential and recreational. With its tended gardens, acres of woodland parks and miles of bathing beaches, with balmy summers and mild winters, its impressive tourist attraction and international conventions, Flower Shows and Folklore Festivals - Haifa offers many splendid rewards to all its visitors.
ATTRACTIONS
The Reuben and Edith Hecht Museum The Museum houses the permanent exhibition: "The people of Israel in Eretz Israel", Israel archaeology and findings from the University excavations. The art wing includes Impressionism and the Jewish School of Paris. The Tikotin Museum of Japanese Art The Museum was founded in 1959 by Felix Tikotin of Swizerland, and based on his private collection. The goal of the Museum is to allow the Israeli public to get acquainted with Japanese art and to promote a mutual understanding between the two countries. The galleries have been designed in the spirit of Japanese architecture - spacious halls, paper screen sliding doors and a Japanese garden. The museum collection comprises some 6000 artifacts, including lithographs, drawings, textiles, ancient illustrated books, ceramics, miniatures, lacquer and metal works and decorative artifacts, mainly from the 17th - 19th centuries, as well as modern Japanese art.

Babylon Tuesday, July 25 2000 22 Tammuz 5760 'To be a Bulgarian is to be a mensch' By Leora Eren Frucht (July 11) - It is 1943, and thousands of European Jews have been rounded up and are being held for deportation to Auschwitz. What if you could freeze that moment, rewind the film and watch as the Jews simply returned home? It sounds like the stuff of dreams or movies. But that is just what happened to thousands of Jews in Bulgaria during World War II, among them Rachamim and Rachelle Comforty. "Because those Jews were saved ... on that day, I'm here to tell their story," explains their grandson, director Jacky Comforty, in his film The Optimists: The Story of the Rescue of the Bulgarian Jews from the Holocaust. The 90-minute documentary, which premieres at the Jerusalem Film Festival on Friday, tells one of the most remarkable and little-known episodes of the Holocaust: how the entire Jewish population of Bulgaria, some 50,000 people, was saved - despite Bulgaria's pact with Nazi Germany.

WORLDGUIDE Introduction See Image Gallery Transport Money Essential Info RELATED Thorn Tree Forum Postcards Travel Links Everyone has their own perception of what Israel and the Palestinian Territories (or just 'Israel' for brevity) are about: it's a travel agency package of beaches and sun; it's the Promised Land of the Jews; it's a ticking time bomb; it's the birthplace of Christ. And while it is all of these things, it's much more besides. Personal Security Issues The situation in Israel and the Palestinian Territories remains volatile and, in many parts, dangerous. In particular, the West Bank and Gaza Strip are unsafe; Nablus, Jenin and the Gaza Strip should be considered off-limits, except perhaps for essential daytime travel to Gaza City. The threat of Palestinian suicide bombings and retaliatory strikes by Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) mean the personal security situation in Israel is not reliable or predictable. Prospective travellers are advised to check consular travel advice.

Israel's Culture of Martyrdom (Part 2)
The worst abuses of the Holocaust in Israel, however, have occurred in the midst of debates between Jews, particularly the controversies around the territories occupied in 1967. The frequency and casualness with which Israeli Jews accuse one another of Nazi-like or anti-Semitic behavior today is a disturbing measure of the coarsening of the country's political culture. In October 1995 Sharon, Benjamin Netanyahu and the late Rafael Eitan attended a rally in Jerusalem organized by the extremist right-wing organizations Chabadand Zu Artzenu. The assembled mob called for the deaths of the "Oslo criminals" Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Cabinet minister Shimon Peres, calling them the "Judenrat." One month later Rabin was shot dead by Yigal Amir, a religious nationalist youth who hoped to stop the implementation of the Oslo Accords. Rabin's assassination was the culmination of months of unprecedented incitement and violent demonstrations against the accords and the prime minister himself, who was blamed for betraying the idea of a Greater Israel. At right-wing rallies protesters held up posters depicting Rabin in an SS uniform. Opposition leaders played a major role in these incitements by using an unrestrained rhetoric of blood, land and treason. Posted by The Editor at January 31, 2005 10:42 AM
