Antigypsyism in the Political Culture of the Federal Republic of Germany:A Parallel with Antisemitism?
by Gilad Margalit
Abstract
This article analyses the recent wave of ethnic hatred directed against Romanies (Gypsies), in the political culture of the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG). This ethnic hatred is designated here as antigypsyism. Differences and similarities between contemporary antigypsyism, antisemitism, and xenophobia will be discussed, with a preliminary survey of antigypsy patterns, and its various manifestations since 1945. Antigypsyism in the political culture of the FRG was mitigated under the influence of the Allies' reeducation policy during their occupation of Germany, just as revelations of antisemitism had been. This enlightened trend progressively gained power in the FRG after 1945. Nevertheless, hostile assertions and actions directed towards Romanies, as well as statements indicating implicit and explicit "understanding" of the motivation for their persecution under the Nazis were observed. Such statements were found not just among extreme Right groups, or in the private sphere (as was also largely the case with postwar antisemitism), but prevailed on the fringes of mainstream circles as well, at least during the 1950s. Antigypsyism played only a marginal role in the political agenda of the contemporary German extreme Right. It is certainly not comparable in its depth or dimensions to the central and profound role played by antisemitism in the German extreme Right Weltanschauung. Nevertheless, traditional antigypsyism, and especially the Nazi persecution of the Romanies, gave this ethnic hatred a unique character different from general xenophobic feelings. Antigypsyism has borrowed traditional as well as post-Holocaust antisemitic patterns, and, surprisingly, even has a certain amount of antisemitic content. Like antisemitism, antigypsyism was delegitimized in the political culture of the FRG, and contemporary public appearances are restricted to extreme Right circles.

WORLDGUIDE Introduction See Image Gallery Transport Money Essential Info RELATED Thorn Tree Forum Postcards Travel Links Everyone has their own perception of what Israel and the Palestinian Territories (or just 'Israel' for brevity) are about: it's a travel agency package of beaches and sun; it's the Promised Land of the Jews; it's a ticking time bomb; it's the birthplace of Christ. And while it is all of these things, it's much more besides. Personal Security Issues The situation in Israel and the Palestinian Territories remains volatile and, in many parts, dangerous. In particular, the West Bank and Gaza Strip are unsafe; Nablus, Jenin and the Gaza Strip should be considered off-limits, except perhaps for essential daytime travel to Gaza City. The threat of Palestinian suicide bombings and retaliatory strikes by Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) mean the personal security situation in Israel is not reliable or predictable. Prospective travellers are advised to check consular travel advice.

Israel's culture of racism
By Yousef Munayyer, Collegian editor February 08, 2005 Buried under a story about Israeli naturalization and Ethiopian Jews in last weeks New York Times was a four-sentence blurb. The first sentence: "An 11 year-old Palestinian girl was killed Monday by a gunshot to the face while she stood outside her school in the southern Gaza Strip." Four sentences. The reader does not even get to know the girl's name. I will share her name; Ghadir Mukhaimar. May she rest in peace. This is a sample of the brutal occupation. Every day it continues and the signs of hope, which are boasted, get shot down on a school yard's step. Ghadir's story can bring anger to the most peaceful of men, yet it was the story above her empty blurb that inspired this column. The State of Israel has decided to expedite the naturalization process for certain Ethiopian Jews. Since its inception, the State of Israel hoped to be a home for all Jews.

What A Difference A Decade Makes
By Simon Griver
Philip Galpert, who immigrated to Israel from Ukraine, said that over the years he has come to appreciate the importance of his Jewish heritage and its central place in Israel's culture. Philip Galpert participated as a teenager in the first Midreshet Yerushalayim Ramah Yahad summer camp in Ukraine back in 1993. Then a Ukrainian high school student, he immigrated to Israel the following year, and this summer returned as a counselor to the tenth consecutive annual Ramah Yahad camp. "How things have changed," observed Galpert. "When I was at the camp we knew nothing about Judaism. We could not read or write Hebrew. This summer most of the children at the camp were familiar with Hebrew and some could even speak the language. Having grown up in the former Soviet Union and knowing very little about his Jewish heritage, Galpert, who studies sports physical rehabilitation at the Wingate Institute in Israel, recalled that when he attended the camp he felt very alienated from prayer. It was the first time he had ever seen, let alone opened a siddur.

People of Israel Over 82 per cent of the population is made up of Jews. The remainder 18 per cent consists of the Arabs who are mainly Muslims. Most of the people of Israel live in metropolitan areas and heavy concentration is found around the cities of Jerusalem, Tel-Aviv-Yafo, and Haifa. The people of Israel usually live in numerous communities of more than 2,000 people. Arts, Culture and Music of Israel The talents in Israel are tremendous and this is precisely why the country has a rich culture to boast about. Israel's writers and performers, painters, sculptors, and photographers have always examined personal and social issues relating to Jewish identity and statehood. Many Israeli artists and sculptors, including Yaacov Agam, Dani Karavan, and Reuvin Rubin, have even gained international recognition for their work. Filmmaking is also a growing market in Israel and had begun in the 1950s and since has developed strongly under the Israel Film Center. Flag of Israel The flag of Israel is white with a blue hexagram (six-pointed linear star) known as the Magen David (Shield of David), which is centered between two equal horizontal blue bands near the top and bottom edges of the flag.

Culture Most of the Israelites' culture was based on their religion, Judaism. The only thing the Israelites did for fun was they danced and played music. Ekron This is a pot and dome from a shrine in Canaan. This is a statue of a god during the time of the Israelites. In Ancient Israel the arts were either religious or made to help their daily life. Most of their music was also religious. The Israelites are known for their creative dancing, though. They danced when they won wars, and at most religious ceremonies. Agricultural Holidays There are two main agricultural holidays: Passover and Shavuot. In Passover the Israelites could not eat anything that had flour in it. The Israelites had no time to let the bread rise so they had to eat 'Matza'. Matza is bread without yeast, which means it is flat bread. Shavout is based on the first fruit of the seven species: wheat, barley, grapes, figs, olives, and dates. Museum Lobby Africa China India ... Terrorists Reap Rewards, Come Back for More
In the wake of receiving the largest reward in modern history for terrorism, the Palestinians gleefully set fire to synagogues in Gaza. Is this the beginning of the next assault of the Palestinians against Israel? Already, the Israeli army is preparing the residents of 40 Israeli towns adjacent to Gaza for an imminent wave of terrorist attacks.
