Israel Time and Date Israel Culture Back to Top The society of modern Israel has various sources, but the majority of these sources stem ultimately from Judaism and the modern political movement called Zionism. Crystallizing in the late nineteenth century as a response to both the repression of Jews in Eastern Europe and the non-Jewish European nationalist movements of the time, Zionism called for the reversal of the Jewish dispersion and the "ingathering of the exiles" to their biblical homeland. Although only small numbers of Jews had resided in Palestine since the destruction of the Second Temple by the Romans in A.D. 70, the "new Yishuv" or prestate Jewish community in Palestine, dates from 1882 and the reached from Russia of a group called Hibbat Tziyyon intent on settling the land as part of its fulfillment of the Zionist ideal.

Report on Global Anti-Semitism January 5, 2005 Executive Summary I. Anti-SemitismAnti-Semitism has plagued the world for centuries. Taken to its most far-reaching and violent extreme, the Holocaust, anti-Semitism resulted in the deaths of millions of Jews and the suffering of countless others. Subtler, less vile forms of anti-Semitism have disrupted lives, decimated religious communities, created social and political cleavages, and complicated relations between countries as well as the work of international organizations. For an increasingly interdependent world, anti-Semitism is an intolerable burden. The increasing frequency and severity of anti-Semitic incidents since the start of the 21st century, particularly in Europe, has compelled the international com ... However, during the year, the Government continued to deny registration of a new Palestinian NGO in Israel, Tawasul. The organization works to establish connections between Arab citizens and other cultures around the world (see Section 4). The Government stated that it merely wanted the organization to change its name, due to its similarity to those of other registered NGOs. ... [

Most of the Palestinian population were now stateless refugees driven from their traditional lands. Many thousands ended up in squalid refugee camps in Lebanon. Others sought out relatives in Jordan, over half of whose population is of Palestinian descent. Others moved further afield: as with the Jews, Palestinian communities with many of the same attributes (a focus on education, business and professional skills) have grown up throughout the world.
Arafat died in November 2004 in a Parisian hospital (where he had been flown for medical treatment) of an undisclosed mystery condition involving low blood platelets, resulting in him retreating into a coma that rendered him multiple organ failure, a brain hemorrhage and, finally, death. Aged 75, the Palestinians' pioneer had given no prior warning of ill-health before his sudden slip into sickness. His death caused widespread disbelief among the Palestinian people who had thought their leader invincible for evading death on several famous occasions, most notably in an airplane crash and from an attempted assassination. However, fears that the Palestinian movement would degenerate into chaos have so far proven unfounded, although there are no signs that the Palestinians plan to relent their ongoing struggle for reclamation of land and rights.

    Israel: Culture of Life
In Israel, one more light has gone out after burning brightly in the face of Arab/Islamic terror's cold darkness. Yona Melina, who sustained the most severe injuries recorded during the intifada, died at the age of 38 in Shiba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer Monday after his condition took a turn for the worse during the past two weeks. Melina, who sustained his injuries during a Jerusalem terror attack 10 years ago, was able to communicate with his family members through facial expressions. As his condition began to deteriorate, Melina asked his attorney, Tzahi Hushan, to prevent doctors from hooking him up to any life-support systems. ... Melina, who spoke nine languages, was paralyzed from the neck down and was unable to breath on his own.
He immigrated to the country from Switzerland on his own as a young man, and was on his way to a Hebrew lesson at Hebrew University when the terror attack changed his life forever.
Melina's mother, Eva, said that during his stay in Switzerland following the injury all Melina wanted to do was die, but he had a change of heart when acquaintances from Israel came to visit him
"When he began thinking of going home (to Israel), it was a turning point," she said. "Ever since then

CULTURE In Palestinian parts of the country, Muslim culture is more evident: you'll generally see fewer women, and those that you do see will be dressed more modestly. Sunni is the predominant Muslim sect. Family and hospitality are very important in Palestinian life, and most Palestinians are extremely friendly and helpful to strangers, going so far as to welcome them into their homes.

Israel Culture Week brings Dr. Ruth
By Nicol Jenkins Published: Monday, March 29, 2004 What do Hookah Night and sex therapist Dr. Ruth Westheimer have in common with UCF? They are all part of UCF's Israel Culture Week beginning today. This fun-filled week is sponsored by Hillel@UCF, the Jewish student group on campus, Central Florida Hillel, Knights for Israel and the Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity.
Benjamin Sack, president of Hillel@UCF and member of the Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity, aims to bring a taste of Israel's culture to UCF. "I would like to show students that there is more to Israel than the conflict shown in the news," Sack said.
In Israel Culture Week's main event, sex therapist Dr. Ruth Westheimer will speak to UCF students on the culture of Israel at 1:30 p.m. on Friday in Business Administration Room 119. Dr. Ruth is a Holocaust survivor and fought in the Israel War of Independence.
