The Island is not as densely populated as other leading offshore centres, having only 75,000 residents, making for a better quality of life in general. With 500 miles of open roads, traffic congestion, although on the increase, is not nearly as bad as that experienced by UK motorists. The influence of the Irish Sea moderates extremes of weather conditions, and provides for warmer Winters and cooler Summers. Snow and frost are infrequent, although the Island does receive more than it's fair share of wind and rain.

The Calf of Man, an islet off the southwest coast, is administered as a nature reserve and bird sanctuary by the Manx Museum and National Trust. Government: Crown Dependency with own parliament.
