The Isle of Man is an island situated in the Irish Sea between the United Kingdom and Ireland. The main towns and villages are located along the coast, where small bays offer shelter. Hills and mountains make up much of the island's interior with tall trees and deep valleys. A flat plain lies in the north of the island leading off to cliffs which drop down to the sea. Wooded glens can be found all over the island, each one with its own beauty and charm.

Physical Geography
The Isle of Man occupies a central position in the Irish Sea, and also in the British Isles. Douglas, on the east coast, has a latitude of 54.08N and a longitude of 4.27W. The Island is 52 kilometres (33 miles) long from north to south and 22 km (13 miles) wide from east to west at the widest point. The coastline, which covers over 160 km (100 miles), encompasses an area of 572 sq. km (227 sq. miles). Despite its comparatively small size, the Island contains a wide variety of scenery. A range of hills stretch obliquely across the Island, the highest of which is Snaefell at 621 metres (2,036 feet). Between these hills lie well defined valleys. Around the Island's flat northern plain are long sandy beaches which contrast markedly with the rocky cliffs and sheltered bays around the rest of the coastline. Over two thirds of the land mass is cultivated, principally the fertile northern and southern plains.
Demographics
The 2001 Census recorded a resident population of 76,315 (37,372 males, 38,943 females) which represented an increase of almost 9.4% since the 1991 Census. This increase occurred mainly within the working age range through the immigration of economically active persons, which reflected the expansion in the Manx economy over the previous 5 years and underlined the close relationship between economic and demographic growth.

Geography and Climate
The climate is equable, lacking in extremes and enjoying the warming influence of the Gulf stream which flows around the shoreline. Prevailing winds blow from the South West, giving varying degrees of shelter and exposure island wide due to the rugged nature of the topography. Once clear of the winter months the weather quickly becomes finer and from April through to October pleasant settled weather conditions are the norm. In the summer, the months of May and June are usually the driest whilst May, June and July are the sunniest. July and August are the warmest. Currently the population stands at 73,000 giving the Island one of the lowest population densities in Europe and with about 40% of the Island being uninhabited there is always plenty of room to move around. The major business centre is based on Douglas, the capital, which together with nearby Onchan accounts for some 50% of the total population. Return to Isle of Man - Contents - Last updated June 1997

Geography
As the old schoolboy adage has it "History is about chaps whilst Geography is about maps". Maps are covered elsewhere - geography here will be interpreted in a wider sense of man's use of Man! Such work obviously builds on Geology which studies the physical mechanism by which the Manx landmass and soils took on the form we are now familiar with. I assume that all are familiar with the Island's position in the centre of the Irish Sea and approximately at the geographic centre of the British Isles.
Physical Geography
Lamplugh's opening description of the key topographical features is a good summary: The predominant feature in its stratigraphy is the central ridge of slate and greywacke, which seems to have constituted an insulated tract at as early a date as the beginning of the Carboniferous Periods This prototype of the present Island appears afterwards to have been enfolded and obliterated by the sediments of later times; but with the progress of denudation the old ridge has once more emerged from beneath this mantle. Its insular character is as well maintained in its physical as in its geological features. The erosive agency of the simple drainage system, descending radially to the sea from the central hill-ridge, together with that of the waves which surround it, is adequate to explain all the contours of its present surface

An island of Great Britain in the Irish Sea off the northwest coast of England. Occupied in the 9th century by Vikings, it passed from Norway to Scotland in 1266 and to the earls of Salisbury and of Derby in the 14th century. Parliament purchased the island in 1765, and it remains an autonomous possession of the British crown. var tcdacmd="cc=edu;dt"; Encyclopedia Man, Isle of, island (1995 est. pop. 73,000), 227 sq mi (588 sq km), off Great Britain, in the Irish Sea. The coast is rocky with precipitous cliffs; the Calf of Man is a detached rocky islet off the southwest coast. The island's towns include Douglas (the capital), Peel, Ramsey, and Castletown. The rounded hills in the center of the island rise to 2,034 ft (620 m) at Snaefell. The beautiful scenery and extremely mild climate (subtropical plants are grown without protection) make the island a popular resort. The people are mainly of Manx (Norse-Celtic) and British descent, Christian (Anglican, Roman Catholic, Methodist, Baptist, and other denominations), and speak English and Manx Gaelic. Today's economy relies on offshore banking, financial services, light manufacturing, and tourism. Agriculture and fishing, once the economic mainstays, have declined. Nonetheless, oats, barley, turnips, and potatoes are grown, and cattle, sheep, pigs, and poultry are raised. Dairying and fishing remain somewhat important, and Manx tweeds are made from local wool.

Occupied by Vikings in the 9th cent., the island was a dependency of Norway until 1266, when it passed to Scotland. From the 14th to the 18th cent. (except for brief periods when it reverted to the English crown) it belonged to the earls of Salisbury and of Derby. Since 1765, when Parliament purchased it from the Duke of Atholl, the Isle has been a dependency of the crown, but it is not subject to acts of the British Parliament. The Tynwald, the Isle of Man's legislature, is the world's oldest continuous legislative assembly.
