Pieter Claesz: Master of Haarlem Still Life
September 18 - December 31, 2005 West Building, Dutch Cabinet Galleries Related Online Resources
Overview: Pieter Claesz, who lived and worked in Haarlem between 1621 and 1660, was one of the most important Dutch still-life painters of the 17th century. Claesz pioneered the development of monochrome table-top still lifes (the so-called monochrome banketjes ), quietly restrained works imbued with an extraordinary sense of naturalism. The exhibition will showcase 25 of Claesz's still lifes from all phases of his career. The paintings of mincemeat pies, breads, lemons, olives, nuts, fruits, and wine are visual feasts that delight the eye and whet the appetite. Claesz reveled in capturing the effects of light and the different textures of objects through his varied handling of paint. He also included objects infused with symbolic implications, indicating that the viewer should reflect upon worldly transience and spiritual truths.

ISLAMIC MOVEMENT OF UZBEKISTAN CONTROLS DRUG TRAFFIC TO CENTRAL ASIA, SPECIAL SERVICES SAY
According to Kirghiz secret services, channels for trafficking drugs from Afghanistan to Central Asian countries are currently controlled by gunmen of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU).
The above has been revealed by Bolot Dzhanuzakov, head of the National Security Service of Kirghizia, in an interview the Slovo Kyrgyzstana newspaper carried Tuesday.
Dzhanuzakov said that gunmen led by the IMU's Dzhuma Namangani control the northern section of the drug traffic from Afghanistan. He noted that, apart from being drug traffickers, they also sell drugs in Kirghizia, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.
The National Security Service chief believes that "the main task of the international terrorists is to keep the drug traffic going, as the drug business has been and remains the main source of finance for international terrorism." Dzhanuzakov recalled that "Afghanistan is a leader of illicit drug trade, accounting for two-thirds of the world's narcotics output." Dzhanuzakov also declared that there remains the possibility of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan's gunmen invading Kirghizia. "We are ready to repel a possible invasion, and we possess reliable information on the number, plans and whereabouts of the gunmen," said Dzhanuzakov. He added that Afghanistan remains the seat of bandit units.

Islamic Jihad activist reported killed in Israeli attack
Jewish settlers throw stones at Palestinians during the funeral of a toddler at a Jewish settler enclave overlooking Hebron RAFAH, Gaza (CNN) An Israeli helicopter attack Monday killed a senior member of the radical Palestinian group Islamic Jihad, Palestinian officials said. An Israeli helicopter gunship fired four missiles at the car carrying 30-year-old Mohammed Abdel Al, Palestinian officials said. Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for a bomb attack at a shopping center in Jerusalem last week that injured six people. Israeli military authorities had no immediate comment on the strike. Palestinians accuse Israel of targeting at least a dozen activists since their uprising began in late September. TIMELINES Recent acts of violence in the Middle East: Bombings Activist deaths Al's death followed the killing of an Israeli reservist in an exchange of gunfire with Palestinians after the burial of two young victims of Mideast violence. The 23-year-old reservist was shot in the head late Sunday as he stood guard at an army post near the Jewish settlement of Itamar outside the West Bank town of Nablus late on Sunday, the army said.

Islamic Architecture - An Appreciation - By Sakar Datoo Whether in colour, or clay, or stone,

The true miracle of art is shown when

decades ago as an endeavour of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, there has
been increasing awareness and appreciation of Islamic Art and
Architecture. As is known to most of us, the winners of the Seventh Cycle of the Aga
Khan Award for Architecture were announced at the ceremony held on 9th
October,l998 in the gardens of Alhambra, itself one of famous monuments
of Islamic Architecture in the West. As the event dominates the news at this time, I am prompted to share my perceptions and appreciation, amateur albeit, on the subject of Islamic Architecture. In the year 622 AD, Prophet Muhammad (SAW) migrated (Hijrat) to the city of Yatrib(which later became Medina). There, a community of believers who had accepted Islam prayed in the compound of the Holy Prophet(SAW)’s house. The congregational prayers of this new community

Islamic Calligraphy from a Private Collection
Editor's note: This is one in a series of articles showing objects from a private collection of Islamic art. This article covers highlights of the calligraphy collection.
JB: Many of our readersmyself includedapproach these calligraphic works with little or no background knowledge. Could you please introduce us to the field of calligraphy?

AR: There are two key facts that will help you appreciate the elevated position of calligraphy in the Islamic world: First, specific depictions of the human form are considered sacrilege in Islam . Second, as you learned when we discussed the amulet portion of my collection, verses of the Holy Koran figure significantly in everyday Islamic life.
JB: So, you're suggesting that these factors focused much creative and artistic energy on the written word?

AR: Indeed. And the calligrapher , because he could both delight the eye and feed the soul, held an honored place in the culture . The value of calligraphy was such that it could be readily converted into currency: calligraphic panels traded for their weight in gold
    JB: Literally?
