121. Islamic Poetry: Reflections Of Taqwa - Islamic Poetry- The Islamic Garden

Islamic Poetry
Reflections of Taqwa
It pains me to look around and see how precious life is wasted, and how this beautiful world is being slowly poisoned. I feel so sad to see little children grow up in ignorance; knowing little about Islam and being taught not to care. In all the talk of economic development, growing cities, higher standards of living - I still see the spiritual poverty, the broken hearts and instability of human beings, whose needs are no longer met. Human beings, caught in the web of the new age and who, in their ignorance, too often do not know how to escape its evil clutches. My poems are a personal expression of what I see around me and what I see as the answer to all this mess, which we call western civilization. Yet, the spirit of man remains intact and strong, as we submit to Allah and follow Islam. There is no beauty without truth, no goodness without sacrifice and no salvation without obedience.
In Allah's name
by Velma Cook Everything in and around us - everything that exists which we don't know about - all belongs to Allah, the Creator of all. Everything we do therefore, should be in His name.

Box 15875 I.R. Iran is a major producer of natural gas and petroleum. Major Environmental and Conservation Issues There is air pollution in Iran, especially in urban areas, due to vehicle emissions. Refinery operations and industrial waste also deposit large amouts of chemicals and particle matter into the environment. Deforestation, overgrazing and desertification all contribute to the destruction of plant and animal habitats on the land. Oil pollution, in the form of spills or run off, makes its way into the Persian Gulf, disturbing the plants and animals that live within it. Due to this kind of pollution, Iran has inadequate supplies of potable water. In addition to man made problems, Iran experiences periodic droughts, floods, dust storms, sandstorms, earthquakes along western border and in the northeast. Introduction
This is a report of a solo-trip to Iran, undertaken during July 1996 [please note that this was way before the election of Khatami]. I have compiled it from my travel notes, often omitting irrelevant details such as where I ate what, where I slept, and so on, but adding some afterthoughts and hindsights. I am from Luxembourg, so expect a slightly European mind-set, but maybe tainted by the fact that I actually lived in Turkey. This journey was totally improvised, reservations being a concept totally alien to me. Of course I did some homework beforehand, so as to know the must-sees. My only available information source was the Lonely Planet guide "Iran - A Travel Survival Kit (1st edition)" (Australia, 1991, by David St Vincent: a great book, but aging badly; fortunately, new editions are always in the making). Descriptions are kept informative enough so that those who have been there should recognize the places, while those who would like to go there should be able to locate them. This report is not intended to be a crash course on Iranian history and culture.

124. History & Info - The Islamic Calendar
Introduces the lunar calendar that governs religious observances. Explains why you can't print an islamic calendar in advance.
http://webexhibits.org/calendars/calendar-islamic.html
The Islamic calendar
The Islamic calendar (or Hijri calendar) is a purely lunar calendar. It contains 12 months that are based on the motion of the moon, and because 12 synodic months is only 12 x 29.53=354.36 days, the Islamic calendar is consistently shorter than a tropical year, and therefore it shifts with respect to the Christian calendar. The calendar is based on the Qur'an (Sura IX, 36-37) and its proper observance is a sacred duty for Muslims. The Islamic calendar is the official calendar in countries around the Gulf, especially Saudi Arabia. But other Muslim countries use the Gregorian calendar for civil purposes and only turn to the Islamic calendar for religious purposes.
What does an Islamic year look like?
The names of the 12 months that comprise the Islamic year are: Muharram Rajab Safar Sha'ban Rabi' al-awwal (Rabi' I) Ramadan Rabi' al-thani (Rabi' II) Shawwal Jumada al-awwal (Jumada I) Dhu al-Qi'dah Jumada al-thani (Jumada II) Dhu al-Hijjah (Due to different transliterations of the Arabic alphabet, other spellings of the months are possible.)

Freer Gallery of Art The arts of the Islamic world flourished in a vast geographic area extending from Morocco and Spain to the islands of Southeast Asia. Although distinct in their cultural, artistic, ethnic, and linguistic identities, the people of this region have shared one predominant faith, Islam.
The works on view here represent the three principal media for artistic expression in the Islamic world: architecture (both religious and secular), the arts of the book (calligraphy, illustration, illumination, and bookbinding), and the arts of the object (ceramics, metalwork, glass, woodwork, textiles, and ivory). The works date from the 9th to the 17th century. On view are brass bowls and candlesticks, folios from the Koran, earthenware and ceramics, and paintings representing the traditions of Iran, Iraq, Syria, Egypt, and other parts of North Africa, Turkey, Afghanistan, and Uzbekistan.

138. Who Practices Polygamy?
Information on the history of polygamy and the acceptance of it or forms of it in many societies, from an islamic view point.
http://www.usc.edu/dept/MSA/humanrelations/womeninislam/polygamy.html
Who Practices Polygamy?
Who Practices Polygamy?
Polygamy has been practiced by mankind for thousands of years. Many of the ancient Israelites were polygamous, some having hundreds of wives. King Solomon (peace be upon him) is said to have had seven hundred wives and three hundred concubines. David (Dawood) had ninety-nine and Jacob (Yacub, peace be upon them both) had four. Advice given by some Jewish wise men state that no man should marry more than four wives. No early society put any restrictions on the number of wives or put any conditions about how they were to be treated. Jesus was not known to have spoken against polygamy. As recently as the seventeenth century, polygamy was practiced and accepted by the Christian Church. The Mormons (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) has allowed and practiced polygamy in the United States. Monogamy was introduced into Christianity at the time of Paul when many revisions took place in Christianity. This was done in order for the church to conform to the Greco-Roman culture where men were monogamous but owned many slaves who were free for them to use: In other words, unrestricted polygamy. Early Christians invented ideas that women were "full of sin" and man was better off to "never marry." Since this would be the end of mankind these same people compromised and said "marry only one."
