IN RETROSPECT
Islamic Schooling in Australia
Siddiq Buckley
I have chosen the word schooling rather than the broad term education because in the Islamic view of the world there has been some form of Islamic education around since the time of Adam and Eve (peace be upon them both ). I would define Islamic Schooling to mean teaching the precepts of Islam in an institutional setting. This, especially in a country such as Australia, is a relatively modern phenomenon - as modern as the arrival of Muslims themselves. My starting point is around 1860 C.E., when the first so-called Afghans came to Australia as camel- drivers for the ill-fated Burke and Wills expedition financed by the then Government of Victoria. These hardy men (for there were virtually no women ever brought with them) helped pioneer the Outback and heralded a number of significant developments in Australia's history, of which the most famous and well remembered are the construction of 'The Ghan' - the railway line from Port Pirie in South Australia to Alice Springs - and the Overland Telegraph line from Adelaide to Port Darwin. Great as their technological achievements were at that time, what we are concerned about is their spiritual development and legacy. A number of mosques (both large and small) were established by these Muslims, of which several still function to this day in capitals like Perth and Adelaide and some for other purposes, such as the local historical Museum in Broken Hill.

111. Excerpt From Jonah Blank, Mullahs On The Mainframe
Excerpt from a book by Jonah Blank, explaining why modernity and islamic fundamentalism need not be mutually exclusive.
http://www.press.uchicago.edu/Misc/Chicago/056767.html
Dream Palace of the Arabs: A Generation's Odyssey "No other book that I know of has such a wealth of detail on the belief systems and praxis of an Islamic religious community. Blank's many-level approach makes this one of the most interesting works I have read: his description of customs, lifestyles, and ideas is based on both unprecedented study of written material and his own painstaking, assiduous field research. His text also, very properly, aims to dispel some of the stereotypes that disfigure Western perceptions of Islam. This unconventional book is a major contribution to scholarship."

Islam and Modernity among the Daudi Bohras

Read an interview with the author. Modernity and Islamic Fundamentalism
(from Chapter 10: Conclusion One of the underlying premises of this study has been a belief in the potential for peaceful coexistence between traditionalist Islam and Western-style modernity. Sadly, such a premise stands in marked contrast to the prevailing popular attitude both in the West and in many Muslim circles. Westerners with little knowledge of Islam often reflexively judge it solely by its most militant, rejectionist elements: the Taliban, hard-line Iranian ayatollahs, or self-described mujahideen of various extremist (even terrorist) organizations. These elements represent only a tiny fraction of world Muslim opinion, yet all too often in the West they are presumed to be the legitimate voice of the entire community. The Muslim world, for its part, is equally quick to take Western actions out of context: there are those who may be profitably reminded that the term "modern values" is not necessarily an oxymoron, and that Western civilization does not find its definitive expression in

Exhibition Opening and Talk - Rasheed Butt, Embassy of Pakistan, Washington D. C....more
For years I have been an admirer of Rasheed Butt's calligraphies. At a time when many calligraphers strive to create new and unusual forms, he has perfected the classical style in a unsurpassable way. His naskh is masterly, and the combination of naskh and kufi, as e.g. in his superb rendering of Surat ur rehman, is unique.
Lately Mr. Butt has concentrated upon composing hilya, the time honoured description of the beauty of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), using the three extant descriptions and writing them in both nashk and nastaliq in a style and shape worthy of their noble contents. A special feature of Rasheed Butt's calligraphies is the ornamentation in golden hues and colours with most subtle arabesques, reviving the most delicate designs.
We hope that the Pakistani master calligrapher will live for many many years to fill the world with the beautiful designs of his miracle-working pen so that we can admire through him the quintessential Islamic art, that of calligraphy, which developed due to the wish to write the word of God as beautifully as possible. Does not the tradition state: "Verily God is beautiful and loves beauty?" It is this beauty which can be sensed through Rasheed Butt's art, the cultural background of the spectator notwithstanding.

The Supreme Court could soon experience a dramatic change in its balance of power between its liberal and conservative factions due to several key events that have unfolded over the past few months. The events began back in July when Justice Sandra Day O'Connor announced her plans to retire from the Court effective upon the nomination and confirmation of a successor. Shortly after this announcement, President Bush nominated conservative jurist John G. Roberts Jr. to replace O'Connor, and most recently, a second seat opened on the Court's bench when Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist passed away on September 3, 2005.
