Islamic Civilization and the Arts introduces students to various elements of Islamic civilization through a humanities approach. Lessons on art, the mosque, Arabic language and calligraphy, poetry, and music provide students with experience analyzing myriad primary source materials, such as images, audio clips, and sayings of Muhammad, excerpts from the Quran. In each lesson, students learn about the history, principles, and culture of Islam as they pertain to particular forms of art. Hands-on activities encourage students to gain an appreciation for Islamic historical and cultural traditions.
Lesson One An Introduction to Islam
Lesson Two The Role of the Mosque , introduces students to the mosque through its history and physical features to help them better understand its significance within Islam. The lesson begins with a general discussion about places of worship. Students learn about Islamic worship and the significance, history, and features of the mosque before comparing Islam with Christianity and Judaism. They deepen their understanding through personal association and connection by visiting a local mosque or taking a virtual tour of a mosque. Students reflect on their experience in a short essay. They then learn about the variation among the physical structure of mosques and how that variation reflects the diversity of cultures in which Muslims live. Students view images of mosques from around the world and complete research and presentations on mosques from various regions.

Long-Term Installation, Open Now Asian Galleries, 2nd Floor Exhibition Highlights
The Asian and Islamic Art galleries provide a survey of the full range of Asian and Islamic art in the Brooklyn Museum, which houses one of America’s foremost collections. It presents more than one hundred masterpieces from these extraordinary holdings, representing China, Korea, Japan, India, Southeast Asia and the Himalayas, and the Islamic world. The Chinese gallery at the Museum features more than 100 objects that cover more than five thousand years of Chinese culture and civilization, from neolithic times to the present. Current interest focuses on China’s diversity as well as its cultural and artistic connections with neighbors. Many objects also demonstrate the ways in which Chinese culture has, throughout history, looked back at earlier traditions as a sign of enduring respect for the past. Korean culture is often presented in connection with China and other East Asian cultures. The Brooklyn Museum’s presentation of its Korean collection emphasizes Korea’s unique traditions, culture, and aesthetics.

    Persian Art
    Through The Centuries
The long prehistoric period in Iran, is known to us mostly from excavation work carried out in a few key sites, which has led to a chronology of distinct periods, each one characterised by the development of certain types of pottery, artefacts and architecture. Pottery is one of the oldest Persian art forms, and examples have been unearthed from burial mounds (Tappeh), dating back from the 5 th millennium BC. The "Animal style" which uses decorative animal motifs is very strong in the Persian culture first appearing in pottery, reappearing much later in the Luristan bronzes and again in Scythian art. During the Achaemenian and Sassanian periods, metal-work continued its ornamental development. Some of the most beautiful examples of metal-ware are gilded silver cups and dishes decorated with royal hunting scenes from the Sassanian Dynasty. The earliest known distinctive style of Persian painting dates back to the Seljuk period, which is often referred to as the "Baghdad School". Early painting was mainly used to decorate manuscripts and versions of the Holy Koran, though some 13 th century pottery found near Tehran indicates an early, unique Persian style of art. During the Mongol period, paintings were used to decorate all sorts of books.

    http://www.pbs.org/empires/islam/cultureart.html
It is often said that Islam bans images of people or animals, but this is false. The Koran itself has very little to say on the subject and the Traditions of the Prophet are open to various interpretations. As Muslims believe that God is unique and without associate, He cannot of course be represented. As He is worshipped directly without intercessors, images of saints, as in Christian or Buddhist art, have no place in Islam. As the Koran is not a narrative like the Torah or the Gospels, there is little reason for Muslims to tell religious stories through pictures. Instead, Islamic religious art has focused on the glorification of God's word, specifically by writing it beautifully, and accompanying the Arabic script with geometric and floral designs known as arabesques minbars , from which the Friday sermon is given in the mosque. Islamic secular art, on the other hand, might or might not have representations of living beings, depending on the local cultural traditions and the preferences of the artist and patron. For example, North Africans have generally shown little taste for images, while Iranians have always enjoyed them, sometimes even in religious settings. Much of Islamic secular art, like religious art, is decorated only with geometric and vegetal patterns and inscriptions, but many objects, whether glazed ceramics, carved ivories, intricately woven silks, or luxurious carpets, are decorated with lively human and animal figures set individually or in scenes. Unlike much Christian art, which largely developed for the use of the Church, Islamic secular art has been characterized by the transformation of everyday objects, whether bowls for eating or carpets and cushions to sit on, into things of transcendent beauty.

Oleg Grabar. Ceremonial and Art at the Umayyad Court.
PhD Dissertation, Princeton Univ 1955. Chpt. I. The Umayyad Royal Idea and its Expression under Mu'awiyah I. Beginning with pg. 18. The development of ceremonial which expresses the position of the ruler in any time or any realm must necessarily relate to the growth of a political idea. The development of royal ceremonial under the Umayyads goes hand in hand with the formation of the theory of the caliphate, which, since Arnold's study, badly needs revision. Most studies of Islamic political theory are based on texts which are not earlier than the eleventh century, and which attempt to formulate a theory of authority according to what it should be and should have been under Islamic law. The only really accurate sources for a true understanding of the political theory of the early Islamic dynasties are recorded in incidents which reveal the underlying political philosophy which may or may not have been expressed, but for which we have no direct evidence. Later, under Hisham, the argument progressed a step further. A certain Qiyam ibn-Shaqi, the Himyarite, asked the caliph: "O Commander of the Faithful, who is more honorable (akram), your successor (khalifah) over the people or your messenger (rasul) to them? The Commander of the Faithful answered: Of course my successor over my people. Ibn-Shaqi retorted: But you are the successor of God (khalifat allah) while Muhammad is only his messenger..." Here we reach the final point of the rationalization by the Umayyads of their power. The caliphate is by its very nature, so to speak semantically, seen as superior first to the prophetic office, and then to Muhammad himself, the prophet par excellence.
